The Westgrove Dog Park is remarkable in many ways. It's quite large and attracts many dogs and their owners. The dogs generally have a great time running, frolicking, and playing. Most owners are responsible. I have seen few aggressive or "reactive" dogs. The park's rules are clearly posted, particularly regarding safety, cleanliness, and health. The Westgrove Dog Park even has a sort of board of directors. The main problem is that many dog owners don't pick up after their dogs. There is a lot of dog waste on the ground throughout the park. The results are unsanitary, to say the least. Some of the negative health consequences for dogs include giardiasis, worms (heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, etc.), E. coli, campylobacteriosis, and staph, as well as toxins and other viruses. The Westgrove Dog Park Board of Directors is not taking this issue seriously enough, to say the least. Other health concerns include the unsanitary drinking water most of the park's dogs drink. Any dog whose owner doesn't have the foresight to provide clean water and a clean water bowl can be exposed to various health risks, including intestinal parasites, giardiasis, leptospirosis, human papillomavirus, salmonella, and kennel cough. read more

We love this park almost as much as our Husky Karma! She loves her dog pals and gets excited as soon as we turn the corner she knows where we are. A lot of the other fur parents and fur babies run to greet her. It's always a good time. We don't like how things have changed with the dogs water. Even in CA the dogs can drink out of the bowls. Let's get for real. They lick each other every where so not sure why you'd think them drinking from same bowls would be an issue read more

This dog park is a great hidden gem. We had no idea it existed until I found it randomly on Google maps. We have been to a few dog parks in the area, but this is one of the largest and cleanest. There are 2 separate areas, which I would assume would be for large dogs and the other for small dogs, however on the day we went the gate connecting the two was open. All the dogs intermingled and they seemed to do just fine. One stand out feature of this park is that volunteers leave giant jugs of water and several water dishes for the dogs. This is a nice gesture to ensure that our pups are hydrated especially on super hot summer days. read more

This is not a stone and dust dog park, it's a beautiful green grass dog park!!! There are 2 water fountains and an acre for dogs to run and play. My dogs love coming here and the people who come here are very nice. The grass is kept up with and everyone picks up after their dogs. So I was so excited to finally be able to take my shepherd to a dog park. We hadn't been to one since we moved here back in August. Unfortunately, it ended up with a $250 vet visit, and a dog struggling to walk. The big park area with the pretty grass was closed. So everyone was hanging out in the smaller area that is pretty much just dirt with small patches of grass near the fence line. He was running and playing with the other dogs. Others were throwing the ball for him, and a few times he chased the ball near the far fence line. And then he came back limping. I wasn't sure if he pulled something or if he stepped on something. He had a good amount of adrenaline so it looked as though he was pushing through the pain. But he was really struggling to walk by the time we came hime. After checking his feet again I saw blood on one of them. And after taking him to the vet, come to find that Every single one of the pads have a chunk of tissue missing or scraped up and now the poor guy is on antibiotics and pain killers and struggling to walk. I don't know what was on the ground there but it was enough to cause significant damage since the skin on his pads is very thick. Ive been taking him to dog parks for years and we've never had a problem. I've heard great things about this dog park from my neighbors. And the reviews were all good on line. I'm just really disappointed. And doubt I'll be taking Isaac back there. read more

Huge expansive field with multiple entrances, dog bags, toys neatly organized and on this 90 degree morning plenty of bottled water. This is the cleanest and largest grass dog park I've been to, with the Duke St one coming in second because of how swampy it gets. I'd like to come here more often, but it's tucked away on the east side of Alexandria and took a couple loopy highways to get there. Dogs and people were friendly. They have an agility jump and what looks to be a ramp for a taste of agility training. With how well cared for the grass is they could use a sprinkler or two for the pups on hot days. Excellent field for ball play, plenty of toys to play with. read more

The park itself is absolutely fantastic. Multiple entrances, green grass, fresh water--I couldn't ask for more. But not all of the pet parents are responsible. There are dogs there that are regulars that should not be at dog parks because they are aggressive towards other dogs. I used to love going here, but I haven't been for months now because every time I went there were dogs that I knew had problem behavior and I didn't want my dog to get hurt. And my dog is 100+ pounds, to be clear, so this is not an issue of size. Some of these dog owners are just not watching their dogs and are bringing some dogs that are not well-behaved at dog parks. I went to this park often a few years ago and found snooty owners, certain dogs who nipped and attacked other dogs with impunity, and what would seem like a different set of rules for the dogs of those who manage the park (and their friends.) While there, I have been bitten and one of my dogs has been attacked. And the owners of those dogs just shrugged it off. No accountability. There is a sense that some people "own" the park here and others are only welcome if they genuflect to the clique. I won't be going back. read more

Me, Roger, Ted and Mr. Pickles love, love, love this park...and watching it grow! We've been coming here for 5 years-ish...great running area...on grass! There are a team of volunteers that work very hard to expand the park, with more shade, less mud, water fountain for dogs...etc. Big plans for this little park!~ They also have HOT DOG FRIDAY NIGHTS (in the summer) with homemade desserts! Usually from Mellissa, resident baker. :) All in all it's a perfect place to bring your dogs to socialize... and you too! read more

I used to love this park, until I took my pup here for his birthday- what was supposed to be the start of his celebration. Well, we wound up at the vet with a $400 vet bill from a golden, Warrior is his name, that maimed my dog. I can't find the owner anywhere, despite reaching out on their Facebook page, receiving the owners name & a "oh I know him" - there's no accountability for any bad behavior from animals. Pet parents tend to sit on their phones or chit chat & ignore what their animals are doing. Shame on them. Beautiful park, nice grassy area but since responsibility isn't at the forefront of the pet parents minds and isn't a stressed requirement for this park- we will NEVER be back. And honestly- I'm on the verge of contacting a lawyer to force the park to track down this "regular" with an aggressive dog. ‍‍ read more

This is a nice dog park if you don't have kids. If you have kids, you'll be greeted by snooty neighbors telling you that you're not welcome. Apparently kids under 9 are not allowed. I have never heard of such an absurd rule. My kids have been going to dog parks with us their whole lives and were confused and upset when they were told not to play with the dogs for "their own safety". I'm their mother and can determine what's safe for my kids, thank you. read more

Large park. No trees inside the fence, but the area is surrounded by trees. There are some benches and a picnic table as well. On a lovely Fall afternoon, we encountered about 15 well-behaved dogs and friendly owners. Plenty of room to throw a ball and play fetch. Bring water with you. read more

Claims to have a little dog park but the gate is open so my dog doesn't have anywhere fun to play. It's annoying and selfish

Lots and lots of space for dogs to run around! Until the end of the year, it's grassy space as well--no burned paws on hot gravel! In winter, it gets muddy, so in the spring, they close 3/4 of the space to replant the grass. The park has its regulars, and people are always very friendly, although--like any dog park--you get those few who don't know how, or won't, respond appropriately to their aggressive dogs. Watch your dogs carefully to avoid unpleasant encounters. There are two unofficial spaces, so you can take the shier or less-trained dogs to a quieter area, but there are no official divisions, so--again--just watch your dogs, and all should be well! In warmer weather come around on a Friday for complimentary hot dogs and brats! This park is my and my dog's happy place! read more

1 star for the people that continue to use this park and NOT clean up after their dogs! I Walked the perimeter with my dog and counted 25 piles of dog waste in the south end alone! Seriously? I understand once in awhile missing your dog doing their business but there are some at this park that feel it's beneath them to clean up or attend to their animals....Cell phones and inane conversations are much more important. The board provides dog bags at 4 different stations, signs reminding you to pick up after your pet and trash cans with county pickup are there for you...SO PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET!! Keep it up folks and you will lose this great park to a kids baseball field. The one in the school right next to the park was taken away due to overcrowding trailers. Wow. After reading the other reviews I decided I'd give my luck a try and visit. I'm astonished at the attitude of the dog parents here. They are nothing less than rude. I brought my dog who is recovering from a fractured tail to check out the park. We walked around the outside of the fence to get used to it. One gentleman walked up and joked what did she do to be kept outside. I explained and it was fine. Then several dogs got into a scuffle and were just too rough. A lady sitting in a group at a picnic table inside thought it would be a great idea to discuss how it's a terrible idea to walk around outside the park saying how it bothers the dogs inside who were at that point running up, growling, and goading my dog. I will never ever return. Good luck to those considering trying out this park. read more

This park has been a lifesaver for us! Our Bernese Mountain Dog pups are non stop energy, and this has been a perfect place to expend some of that. The people on the board of the park do a great job and volunteer hours of their own time to maintain the park and organize upgrades and fundraising. They also do a terrific job communicating about events and any changes going on in the park. The whole park is grass and at the beginning of the summer, year round water was installed. That's been fantastic. The dogs are very well behaved and the dog parents have all been very nice. Of course there is a very rare scuffle once in awhile, but it's dogs we're talking about here so it's going to happen on occasion. It's a great place to take your dog, and can also be a great resource for advice. There are also lots of folks that run dog walking and babysitting services so if you're looking for that, odds are you'll be able to meet someone at the park. read more

There is extremely limited shade in the summer. So, get ready to sweat! Don't wear black, wear a hat, and sunscreen. Also, there's bowls of water that people bring in, but I'd recommend to bring your own because your dog will be hot and exhausted. When it rains (or snow melts), it becomes a mud pit and my dog slides and falls constantly. I get a little nervous about him hurting himself. Not to mention your dog is guaranteed to need a bath afterwards. A plus is that It is a really great size. So, just 20 mins of playtime with fatigue your dog for the rest of the evening. They reseeded the grass, but with all the foot traffic, it was kind of pointless. Perhaps, the grass should be changed to mulch? read more

We love Westgrove! Our dog needs at least 30 minutes of running and playing a day, and this is a great facility with a great group of dogs and owners. We've been coming here for the last 2+ years and are so glad it's near us. There's running water, big open spaces, lots of playful dogs of all sizes, and lots of experienced dog owners who are happy to let their dogs play and wrestle and just "be dogs"! There is now a sun/weather shelter installed, as well as picnic tables. There are poop bags all around the park as well as many water bowls for the dogs. Our dog loves Westgrove and we do too!!! read more

This park is great! Our boy loves to cut loose and get all his extra energy out. A pleasant community built around the park and very friendly park goers. Every other park in Fairfax County are all gravel and this is the only one that is green. The Westgrove Pack board keeps the park looking great and the community engaged. read more

I went here for the first time the other day . Overall it was a great experience. Lots of room for the dogs to run and plenty of places to sit. All of the dogs (and people) were friendly. My dog had a great time however running on the hard dry dirt did injure his paws. Once his feet toughen up we will go again. Bring water and wear sunscreen. Enjoy! read more
