I mapped out a 13 mile run today and had planned to start at 7:00 to stay as cool as I could before the sun got too high. It seemed like a good plan, it was a north/south out and back so I was counting some quality shade on the north side of the road. Unfortunately I snoozed my alarm and overslept 45 minutes so it was hotter than I planned for, oh well. About mile 7 I passed a snazzy farm stand, waved to a young woman setting up and contemplated stopping to take a break (it was bloody hot). I could see the refrigerators and fans blowing so I figured I could finish the water I had with me and stop by for some more on my way back. I ended up turning around early after the sun got too high for much shade. When I got back to the farm stand (at 8:54am) i must have looked like hell. I was HOT, salty and felt like I was in the desert. The young woman was sitting at the cash register and an older man was sitting next to a fan, both seemed to join me in questioning how it could be this hot before 9am. I kindly asked where the water was and the man barked that they weren't open yet. (Lol, really? Ok whatever I will stand in front of this fan and stare at the refrigerator with water and be happy im no longer running through hell). I asked when they would be opening and he said 9:00am. 5 glorious more minutes of no sun! But then he said he actually wasn't sure when they would be opening because "the van isn't here." Ok, I just want some water. I told him I have $10 and just needed some water. He said he needed exact change and also added that a water wasn't enough for me to use a credit card, despite me not even daring to ask. I started to get nervous because I had already finished all of my water having assumed this would have been an easy way to get more. I had about 5 miles left of running through the hottest temps of the year & so I looked down at my feet, defeated, and explained I only had a $10 bill. He barked "exact change only." Damn. Wow. So I left the cold water on the counter, turned around & started back on my run. What a jerk, I thought. Then he yelled at me "are you gonna put the water back where it belongs or what?!" I was stunned. No, I didn't turn around and put the water back--did he really expect me to? I ran a couple more miles and called Jared for a ride home, I didn't want to risk the remaking miles without water. Sure I could have paid $10 for the water. I guess I was too out of it to think of asking him to just charge my card $5. I was just too defeated and hurt to even think clearly. Bummer. read more
