It's a true dark and dingy dive bar in Chelsea. I don't come in here often. Maybe have been here 2-3 times so far. But there are perks. It has a pool table in the back. People tend to leave you alone thankfully more than other bars in the area where everyone wants to either ask you 1 million plus 1 questions or be your new friend. Beers are typically priced around $8-9. I feel like the crowd is more eclectic. Like some nights I've seen theater geeks roll in. Elsewise, I appreciate dives that still exist when everything is being replaced with something shiny and gimmicky these days. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! TERRIBLE! Tonight my group of friends and I were heading over here and on our way over the bouncer snatched money out of a homeless man's hands and yelled out "he didn't earn it. It's my money" how dare you do that! That's horrible and inhumane! The bouncer is a large man with glasses and a hat. He had the nerve to yell at me and my friends when gave him the money back! If you are a miserable person there is no need to take it out on someone less fortunate than you. I work in the neighborhood for years and this was one of my favorite bars but after tonight I will never give this place business again! Be better as a business! I stop in here every now and again and find it pleasant. The staff is great. They have a pool table in the back which is nice if you want to blow off steam. The crowd seems like a commuter crowd - at least until 9PM. The people who frequent come in groups. I can slip in, do some work on my laptop while having a glass of wine uninterrupted. Or, if I am in a "Mr. Rogers" kind of mood, it can also be a place to strike up a conversation with people in the Neighborhood. read more

Popped in here pretty much out of desperation, and I hated it as soon as I entered: music was too load and the place had a locals only vibe..But the the Bartender Chris sprinkled some bartending charm around, and I soon found myself digging the Westside Tavern. A rather bedraggled patron filed into the bar, and the bartender responded, "You, I told you that you're not aloud in here anymore." As soon as I heard this, I knew that I was home. I soon found myself smiling at the bartender's antics, as he danced and sang his way to the bartending Hall of Fame. The rest of my stay at the Westside seemed to take on a new light, as the music didn't seem so loud, the regulars not so surly, and the day not so drab. Had a really terrible experience here about a week ago that required my calling the police. After spending a few hours here and having a generally fine but not noteworthy experience, I was walking out of the bar to take a call when the bouncer threw me onto the ground outside the bar without any provocation or rationale. I climbed back up and asked him to explain himself, to which he responded with thuggish threats without providing any explanation for his actions. I called the police, who arrived shortly onto the scene. Upon being questioned by the police, the bouncer described a preposterous story about how I had been hurling homophobic slurs and grabbing the doorknob, to which he had no choice but to respond by force. Frustratingly, it devolved into a he said he said argument, and since I was lucky enough to walk away with a few bloody scrapes and nothing more serious, left it there for the night. I made a harassment claim to document the incident (which I've uploaded), and even now I am not sure what set the bouncer off on this relatively quiet night besides possibly a case of mistaken identity combined with totally inappropriate overzealousness. That awful experience aside, there's really nothing notable about this neighborhood bar in terms of ambience, and the quality of service was below average. I'd advise others to stay away from here and instead pick from the wealth of other options available in the area. read more

A group of us (about 10) begin to enter and the rotund, intoxicated bouncer yells at us for "letting the AC out." Then after we order a round we attempt to order another and are inexplicably denied service and asked "where we came from" earlier in the night for whatever reason. That is all. In order for this review to make sense you need to understand the background... Super Bowl weekend ... watching the game ... half time and the show comes on. As soon as the play stops the bar tender turns off the sound and puts on some crappy 1970's music. Two ladies in their 50s / 60s were at the bar and clearly wanted to watch the show. When the guy turns off the audio they ask the Bar man if he can turn it in. NO was the reply ... they thought he was joking so asked a few other patrons if he was serious. They ask again... NO and then thing got worse. He says if you want to Watch Justin Timberlake go somewhere else ... and a few other choice words The ladies were shocked and cashed out not leaving a particularly big tip ... understandably Well then the guy unloads in them. I have NEVER heard a man speak so poorly to a woman before let alone a customer. I was so shocked I couldn't believe it. So with that I left too. Came here with the intention of having a meal and a drink but find out they dont serve food only drinks... They Have about 5-7 draft beer and an edxtensive variety of bottles... Lwent there during happy hour so no thst many people but the place like an old atlsnric city casino, it was closed, deemed lights and cugarettes and rustic smelling all over the place. We wandered in here intending to go to the Highline afterwards for a walk. What we expected to be a quick drink or two turned into a few drinks followed by multiple games of billiards (my record 2-1). If you're in the mood to rack 'em up and knock a few into the corner pocket, it's $2 a game. There's a fan on in the back so be ready for a chilly game. There's a nosey, relatively young gossiping bartender there. I got in to it with her like 2 years ago over a girl I was hitting on. Not sure what the exact issue was, it wasn't like the woman was annoyed or asked me to leave.. Anyway, llueva month later I walked in there in the early afternoon and as a soon as she saw me she starts to yell at me to go do my drinking someplace else, and yells for Mike, the other bartender, a friend of mind, sweetheart of a guy, but I was so startled that I just left. I was so embarrassed. The bouncer isn't a bad guy but he has taken her word over mine. The other night I tried to walk in there, 2 years after the ordeal and he still won't let me in ?? It's insane. Worst service ever. Stephanie - worst customer service, bad attitude. I asked for a Tito's/soda as I was looking at the bottle and she tried telling me they don't carry Tito's. She continued to ignore us and when I asked to speak to a manger she said she is the manager and if I have a problem with her service I can ask another bar tender to help me. Try not to PLAN anything with them. Westside Tavern is a perfectly fine place to stop off for a drink, or to get a group of colleagues or friends together for happy hour on a random Thursday. This is because the bartenders have a pretty generous buyback, and the relatively high prices (for a place so ostensibly divey) will keep you from getting wastey-face on a school night. However. I just planned a birthday party with them. It was not a good experience. Like most bars, they had a $1,500 guarantee for me to have my own space (the downstairs 'lounge', which was perfectly sized for my group and had it's own bar, bathroom, and DJ hookup). It was generally a great setup, and I would have nothing to complain about if they didn't screw me in the end. I had easily 60-70 people there, and had already spent $500 on drink tokens for the first round. I found out that the bartender had been buying back drinks all night, and pocketing the tips from the bar, even though they were charging me a 20% gratuity on top of the $1,500. Essentially, there was about a $400 tab that just disappeared and was not applied to my guarantee, so I ended up having to take an $1,100 haircut from my party that increased their house fivefold that night. The bartender looked at me at the end of the night (after she'd run my credit card) and said 'sorry'. I didn't have the wherewithal and/or presence of mind to say anything but 'Have a nice life' in return. Summary: Apparently, the M.O. here is to screw you, if at all possible. One star for the strong pour; One star for the convenient neighborhood dive feel; Minus one star for the disrespect and disloyalty to planned events. read more

I arrived here at around 8-8:30ish on a Thursday night. The place was hopping as though it was Friday or Saturday. It was really crowded. The atmosphere wasn't much to speak of. It was dimly lit without being dim in a "cute" way. The beer was pricey. The music, which was pumped through the bartender's iPod, was loud -- making it difficult to have a conversation. Additionally, she kept erroneously playing the same song over and over again (it was stuck on loop). The good thing is, this is one of the closest bars to a lot of the nearby galleries, so this is a good place to celebrate an opening. It also has a nice pool table. Another benefit is that they are cool with allowing you to bring in food from the outside. The downside of this privilege is the fact that there were not enough tables to accommodate the number of people who take advantage of the "food allowance." As a result, my party and I had to leave when a group with six pizzas descended on our tiny table. read more

Just about the most authentic / open to all bar in Chelsea. High tables for groups, bar stools for locals, a pool table in the back, and couches / semi lounge areas in back for more groups. And good bartenders. Always a diverse crowd (lots of NY Co-ed and Zog teams after games mixed with locals) but always a place to stand or sit. They serve beer, it's cold, and can make mixed drinks and shots. This is my "let's get a drink locally" joint. read more

But hey you gays, there is a downstairs lounge (go alllll the way to the back and to the blue neon sign that says "lounge"), which is home to a party on Friday nights called Snaxx and is for the hairy beefy gay dude. I mean walking in you think, oh no, somehow they planted a frat bar on the far west side of manhattan in chelsea, how is this possible. Then you hangout here a while... You play pool, you watch the dry humping, and sooner or later you see some guys - yes guys... there are no coyote ugly hotties shaking it here... dancing on the table tops. Ok it's amusing for a minute. But then the end of the night comes and you're seeing this drop dead gorgeous chick alone on a couch, head tipped back, full-on snoring on the couch. Anywhere else in the city this chick would have been mauled, but not here! LOL Still the pool was amusing, with the guy that had the fake british accent, and the busty chubbly girl who wanted to bet a $1 on the game, and still lost. Oh I tried to tease a bit, and make the game interesting. It was no use! Still for the pool players the table is decent, flat, and playable. In good condition. What else, very weak sticks, mostly with plastic tips. Here's zero points for IPAs. Went with the Blue Moon... it was the only thing I could stomach! read more

I've seen some reviews call this place a "dive bar". Child, please. I've been in some dive bars and let me tell you, Westside Tavern is like the Ritz on Central Park South compared to some I've visited. With that said - I'm not sure how much credence one will give my review :) We were visiting from Hawai'i - although my 11th time in the city this year, this trip was purely for those long nights filled with laughs, friends, good food and great night caps. We stayed in Chelsea in Chelsea and at 2am on our first night, we decided to have a night cap before we called it a night...or morning. We didn't know what to expect, but what we got was a great neighborhood bar, with great patrons and great service. We frequented this place a number of times while we were visiting. Justin was a great bartender and host. Certainly look forward to having a drink when I'm back in the city. read more

Walk by this place on the daily, but didn't step inside for the 1st 8 months that we lived down the block. But now it's becoming a regular thing. Primarily b/c our soccer games are at Waterside Park this winter, and our team has ended up here for post-game pints (Half King being too crowded to accommodate a group of 8-10). Westside has been crowded when we go, but not so bad for a Thurs evenings. Each time we've been able to snag one of the couches w/ a table and mini-stools in the back. The bar itself is a nice long wood bar, but haven't had the opportunity to sit there for a drink. I could see stopping by at a mellower time of day and having a few beers or whiskeys. There are a few TVs in case you're trying to catch a game..but I like that there's only a few, so it's not at all a sports bar atmosphere (contrast w/ Jake's down the street a couple blocks) read more

Stopped in here the other night with some teammates... drinks were a little pricey. $7 for a Brooklyn Lager? But they did have Magic Hat's Circus Boy on tap and I have never seen anything other than #9 at bars. That was cool. There's no food, so you'll have to eat before or bring in a small snack-- not sure what the limits of their BYOF policy are. And while we grabbed the table at one end of the pool table, I thought we would need to get up and move a lot when they were taking their shot. Surprisingly, the place isn't as small as it seems and there was enough space, so we didn't have to get out of there way once. And the atmosphere of Westside Tavern was very nice-- made it look like a classy dive. Went here to celebrate a co-worker's last day at work. This place is your typical watering hole. There's nothing fancy going on here but I can still see this place being someone or a group's go-to spot. The bartenders and other people were friendly. My neighbor was excited to find out that I went to Westside Tavern. It turns out that this place has been around for a looong time which says a lot considering how many bars close/open every week. My neighbor got to be close friends with a couple of the bartenders from decades ago. So, solid points go to Westside Tavern for withstanding all these recessions and being around for as long as it has. read more

Came here with my BF on a Sunday night. It was quiet, with about less than 10 people. People chose their own music which was cool on the jukebox. There were a couple of pool tables as well. The bartender seemed in-experienced. My boyfriend asked him, "Do you have any specialties?" He replied, "No, not really, but I do make a good whiskey" Both of us= BLANK FACE, STARED AT EACH OTHER, and ordered on our own. Surprisingly, that wasn't the answer that we wanted to hear. C'MON, you make a good whiskey?!?! I can do that too. We thought that most bartenders, would have their own famous drink, he didn't. My BF ordered jack on the rocks and a Coors light, and I ordered a Ketel One Martini with a twist, and a splash of pineapple juice. I enjoyed my drink even though he just threw the twist into the chilled martini glass. I had to rub the twist myself onto the rim of my martini glass, I mean, it wasn't busy, he could of done that for me. My boyfriend and I had a good time, and maybe we'll come back. SO this place is around the corner from my apartment and is one of the only "chill" bars in the area. First, the crowd - random. There were a group of guy from a soccer team that had finished their game at Chelsea piers- fine that in normal, but the rest of the bar was townies and a very sad mix of them if you ask me. Secondly- it took like 20 mins for the bar tender to take my order, and oh, btw, I had to ask her if I could get a drink (the guy bar tender that came later was cool, though) Lastly... MY WALLET WAS STOLEN! Obviously not the bar's fault, but still... the crowd. I will not be visiting again any time soon. read more
