It was too hot to keep walking around so I let Yelp bring me to "dive bar" and it won. It is indeed a dive but there was a welcoming vibe this evening as I had a frosty adult beverage served by a busty and friendly bartender. Definitely meets the criteria for dive bar except for the price of drinks. Prices were about the same as less divey bars in the area. Ambiance was no frills and tiny bathroom. A small tv for maybe a game or so, a jukebox. Just placement of the speakers can be loud depending on where you're sitting. The bartender was pretty chills, and no frills. Not my cup of tea but maybe it will be someone else's. read more

We live in Texas, and he was talking about growing up in Corpus Christi. Very friendly, gave us some good travel tips for the city. No thrills, but love the place. "Hey, there's that bar where I got really trashed at with my friend a few years ago and then my wife got super pissed off at me for spending hours drinking there. Everything was so cheap though and it was so great." Me:"- woah. Just you don't need to say anything more. I'm sold." We were having brunch across the street and this led to impulsive decisions. Johnny's is the place that rich neighborhoods need where you can still get a $4 rolling rock, cheap shots, sit in the grime. It's tiny but also weirdly cozy and warm and has a good neighborhood vibe. I'm only giving one star because I have to leave some sort of star to post a review. Only come here if you want to be talked to like an animal by the bartender. I myself am a bartender so I don't speak to people in the service industry poorly ever. I know it can be a stressful environment. That being said, whoever was there around 2AM last night needs to rethink their career path. I get it, late at night when you want to go home and there's a lot of people talking to you it can be a nightmare, but part of the service industry thing is the service...? Groundbreaking, I know. If that's a big inconvenience for you maybe you should pick another field. And if this is an environment where you can't walk in without being a regular then post some signage that you're going to treat anybody who isn't like a farm animal. read more

A true old school locals dive bar to kick back in and down a few cheap Rolling Rocks and a shot. The usual weirdos and on the edge hipster characters haunt this spot while viewing the hundred sketches or so of Burt Reynolds behind the bar. I kid you not. Smokey and the Bandit rules. Digital jukebox and the people here pick out decent tunes. Just a chill narrow kind of joint with all kinds of crap stuck on the wall behind the bar, some happy hour deals, and a nondescript red neon sign that just says "bar" hanging outside. Oh, and the bathroom is on-point in true graffiti style. I love dive bars. read more

You get what you give at Johnny's. I wasn't expecting anything amazing at this tiny dive bar... just a strong drink with low prices. I got the strong drink but still had to pay the Manhattan price. The bartender was very disengaged and almost came off as he'd rather be somewhere else than serving 30-something professionals. As someone visiting and wanting to learn more about the area, I simply asked him if he was Johnny (just to start conversation) and he replied "Johnny is dead." Point blank and serious. I was like ohh ok thanks. Maybe he is tired of people asking him that question? Regardless of the bartender, the atmosphere is gritty, reminding of me what the area must have been like back in the Punk days. Lots of graffiti, bumper stickers and urine/bleach odors. Nowadays it seems to be more popular with the 30 year old professionals living in their million dollar Village lofts looking for a cheap place to drink with friends. Also, they have a jukebox that will play songs for $1. Just became full with what you choose cause this crowd is judging you with their glares. read more

Cool Dive bar off Greenwich Ave. About what you would expect from a dive. Kind of small narrow bar area with dim lighting, graffiti, that everything under the sun has been here type of smell to it. The bartender was really nice and attentive. Simple and to the point a stiff drink and a few shots are what the doctor ordered or "orders" at this place. Always refreshing to be able to come to a place like this and no be bombarded with the elitist prices you will find at other swanky bars in NYC. Would give zero stars if possible. From the looks of other reviews this bar doesn't know how to hire a good bartender, since others had an issue with a different bartender than who I had to deal with last night. My friends and I had a horrendous experience with their male bartender on Thursday night. From the moment we entered he was hostile demanding that we decide immediately if we would all be on one tab or separate (I get it he wanted to get things moving but we had JUST entered and didnt even have a moment to decide what we wanted to drink). He continued to ignore us and when we did get served, he made heavily watered down drinks. At the end of the night he overcharged my friend and then argued with him about it and as we were exiting the bar he screamed obscenities at us. I will never be returned since this bartender is literally terrifying and horrible at his job! read more

Perfect dive bar, great juke box and our bartender (Christina??) was great too! Small bar. Sign says minimum purchase to use credit card- can't remember if it's $15 or $20. Epitome and definition of a dive bar - which is perfect sometimes. Stopped in here on Saturday afternoon after having brunch a few blocks away, we were just leaving brunch and walking to meet some friends a little past this and stopped in here for a drink before meeting up with them. I love this little dump of a bar. I live in the neighborhood and I am surrounded by small plates and glasses of wine. Organic this and free range that. Sometimes, I just want cheap booze and some laughs with the guys in a relaxed environment. Johnny's is just north of 12th street on Greenwich Ave and is a lovely little hole in the wall. The service is friendly and they make your drinks with little fuss. I came here with a group of guys and we had a ball. There are always some strange characters, locals and other sorts that make the patrons of this place a hodge-podge of the neighborhood. The only downside to this place is that it is very small and it can be tough to move around when it gets busy. read more

Chill Dive Driving thru Greenwich Village and we stumbled upon Johnny's. A pretty cool find. We stopped and grabbed a drink at this small dive bar. The place is dark and the bartender was very friendly. They always have a shot special everyday and 3 cheap draft beers which is nice find seeing your in NYC. An aside story is that a kid came with his friends for his 21st birthday and the bartender made sure that the birthday boy had the birthday house special a shot of tequila with milk. This is about as closed it comes in the West Village to a dive bar. The decor is right, with an old school cash register, various memorabilia, a jukebox operated by the bartender who has the authority to "veto" any selection, and a tap that pours $3.50 Coors Lights (if you love your wallet more than good-tasting beers) as well as Guinness, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, etc. The $5-6 for a pint of these is not particularly cheap, but it's all relative to the nabe. They have daily specials and fishy-sounding shots for $3.50 that you might want to try. The crowd is very laid-back, with the few seats (maybe 15 tops) taken up by regulars and friends. I would definitely make it a mainstay if I lived nearby. read more

Johnny's typically has one bartender working who will have difficulty remembering who is supposed to get served first. They also tend to run "promotions" posted on the walls but won't fulfill them when it's time to pay. Furthermore, they did not close out my tab for me and surprised me at the end with a bill that wasn't in line with the advertised prices. Only thing this place has going for it is its location. As if the neon red sign outside that reads "BAR" wasn't enough motivation we stumbled into this bar on Christmas Day and had ourselves a blast. Diverse clientele ranging from Steve the Salad (youtube it), the gaggle of Texans exploring NYC after one too many drinks, the quiet French men, along with the 50+ gray haired men ready to have a drink. Well Drinks at $5- full selection of liquor. Music seemed to just be a juke box, i.e. when no one fed the machine- the bar was quiet- which was awkward at times, but at least you know you're song will actually be played. All in all we had a great time and Tina our bartender was great. but beware, don't get on her bad side because we did see her literally throw 2 Texans out of the bar. read more

The place is quite small, so don't try to come here with a big group, but definitely worth stopping by with a friend or two to catch up and pregame for a night out. Johnny's is the typical dive bar with the stereotypical smell of last night's alcohol still fresh in the air upon entry. The bartenders are friendly and the drinks are pretty cheap and the odd cast of characters that you'll find populating this place make it a great place to stumble to or from. Close proximity to the train station certainly helps for any late night jaunts. It's a great spot to either start or end the night and there seems to be a good balance of people that both stay all night and those who are just there for a few drinks. This makes it pretty easy to grab a spot. The bartenders are attentive enough you're never left flustered at the bar trying to get a drink. read more

I ADORE Johnnys! It quickly became my go to neighborhood bar when I moved to NYC. The drinks are strong and cheap. The atmosphere is an idyllic dive bar full of odds and ends decorating the place. It's dark and quaint and gets PACKED on the weekends - arrive early for some decent bar real estate, not a great place for large groups. Lots of people in the comments complaining about staff, but honestly - they're fine, if you're polite so are they. Also it's a dive, don't order anything stupid...stick to the basics, don't be annoying. AND you must try their famous beetle juice. It's like a pickle back but better. read more

Vaniya is amazing.. Ask her for impromptu cocktails.. She made me 'captain pirate' and it was really amazing (go ask for it. It has mango and pineapple !!!!!) Probably one of the best cocktail places in Manhattan.. Vaniya can make authentic cocktails as well as invent some.. It is a bit crowdy .. but if you love cocktails just go for it..
