Was craving poke and this was the closest place to walk to and surprisingly had great reviews. I was hesitant getting poke from a store BUT was very pleasantly surprised by just how tender and fresh the poke tasted! You truly did not need anything else but rice to add to the poke and it was perfect. Considering that it is a store they have other items - groceries, gifts and a small selection of hot food - dumplings and musubi (VERY dry). Bottom line yes the store is a little pricey but its the island. Skip the groceries but 100% try their poke - California poke was so delicious! read more

Poke was delicious. Fresh and flavorful. Everything was in prepackaged cartons when we visited (later in the evening). Not sure if it's always like that. If I remember correctly it was around $14 a pound, which seemed reasonable. You can add a scoop of rice for $2 Located by a gas station so there's ample parking. read more

Came to this general store many times during my stay in Napili, Maui. I tried vanilla flavored hot coffee for 3 consecutive days and it tasted so delicious & creamy. Also bought 4 T-shirts for $20, that looked so bright, colorful & of good quality. Love the variety of products that they sell in this store. Lots of healthy food options to choose from like sandwiches, poke bowls, variety candies, snacks, cute looking miniature drink bottles, alcohol, coffees, iced teas, slushy, ice-cream, sovereigns, many flavorful fruit breads, T-Shirts, hats, sunscreens & gift items. They do have Shell Gas station in the premises. Store is kept clean, tidy & well organized. Customer service was good too. It's walkable distance to many hotels. IMHO At first glance, you might think you're entering an ABC Store, but as you walk around, you'll see Whalers General Store has its own personality and vibe. I was searching for a locally Maui-made skincare product, and I had been told to look for it at Whalers General Store. Sure enough, I found them immediately since they were centrally merchandised in the store. You can find almost any of your travel needs, be it souvenirs, or food snacks, sunscreen, beach items, etc. here at Whalers, and sometimes you'll find them at a lower price! When I'm considering an item from an ABC Store, I then go to Whalers to do a price comparison. Hey, in Maui, I try to save money anyway I can! Everyone's talking about their Poke bowls, what? No. Ice cream. Come and get a scoop of Ube ice cream or better yet, double scoop with Ube and Kona Mud Pie! Just make sure it's before 5:30pm, which is I guess when the designated deli person leaves for the day. They will still scoop your ice cream after that time but the store associates aren't exactly "fans" of doing this job and they make it pretty clear. We've always loved this store for random late night snacks, desserts, drinks, a bottle of ketchup.. trinkets. They even have a Redbox. Look no further for some of the best poke on the island because it's here at this hole in the wall by a gas station joint. Now that I'm back at home I'm still dreaming about their California roll poke and spicy ahi poke. They were super affordable and fresh and I can see that they sell out quick because we had only gotten there a little after 2 pm and bought out all the leftovers and we are glad we did. With piping hot fresh rice and the poke by the beach, this was one of the highlights of our trip. If they had poke at 6 am I would've bought some for the flight home but sadly I think poke starts at 8:30/ 9 am like any other place. The service here is great as well and they also have souvenirs and cheap shirts! Definitely gonna stop here first if I ever return to maui! read more

Everything is more expensive in Maui so a general store is extra expensive. This is right under a gym and attached to a gas station. It has a variety of fresh, pre-made and packaged goods. I tried some Bragg gut juice and picked up a bag of shrimp chips. You can also get beer and wine here, as well as some souvenirs. Friendly service and conveniently located off the main road. I was so excited when I yelped poké and discovered that Whalers was right across the street from our condo. I looked at other Yelper's pictures and immediately started to drool. So when I arrived for my poké fix, I was a bit disappointed to see a smaller variety than what was previously pictured. I got a half spicy, half tuna/avocado poké bowl, which was very fresh and delicious. My only critique was that the rice was too hot. I like the rice to be room temp, not hot straight out of a rice cooker. Very reasonably priced at $7.99, probably the only reasonably priced item in the entire island. I work nearby. I forgot my lunch ;( I stopped in to maybe get a bag of chips and hot dog, the last time I came here was a long time ago, when Kahana had a nice, AC working laundrymat. I was impressed with the face lift. They now offer mini plate lunches, shave ice, ice cream, poke and fresh fruits. (And a lot more.) The prices were not that bad either for a convenience store. I got $7.99 mini plate. The options for that day was BBQ ribs and fried chicken. I opted for the ribs and all I could think was this is a mini...?! The size was enough for my sister and I to share. What I like was they allow you to choose from a variety of salads (mac, potato, pasta and green.) Also prices were not outrageous considering it's a convenience store. It hit the spot as the poki was light and the options were just right. My growing family of four, took our choices of poki and musubi's and took off south. From there we found a local park/ocean bench and watched the beautiful ocean, TURTLES, birds and what I think were ferrets roam around. Think about the Poki in these terms. My family and I were staying at the condos accross the street and found ourselves coming here almost everyday for their pokebowls. Overall great selection and very convenient for anyone staying close by. We ended up getting the "Ahi tuna/ Wasabi", "Ahi tuna/Oyster sauce" and "Ahi tuna Spicy" poke bowls. The wasabi bowl (recommended) was alittle overwhelming for my taste, but the oyster sauce and spicy bowls were delicious. Would still recommend if you are in the area. read more

Thet stock a wide variety of drinks, the adult type (alcohol) or refreshments for the kids. They even have a mini Deli so you can get fresh Ahi, spam musubi, and loads of other goodies. Great little convenience store at the Shell gas station! Has the cutest Hawaiian souvenirs and a convenient deli section. The deli section has a variety of poke packed in individual containers. The fresh poke for the day comes in around 8:30am! The cooked food was convenient to take with us for our day trip to the beach. They had spam musubi, fried chicken, and chili rice, and more! They have the typical stuff from ABC and I just got a couple of chocolates for my cousin's kids and some guava jelly. I decided to check out their hot food section and saw that they had two spam musubi left so I quickly got that onto my basket. Overall, the place is clean and friendly (most of the folks that work there were Pinoys) so I felt right at home =) Once I got home: I ate the spam musubi and it was tasty but after drinking beer and sun bathing in the sun... I was exhausted. Next time I plan on fully eating it before I do anything else. PS: if your rental doesn't have a washer/dryer, next door is a laundry mat and it looks clean from the outside =) read more

There is a discount based on how much you buy, so we bought, like, 5 lbs of different pokes - which some might say was excessive but I think of it as ambitious. The poke here is not bad for being a convenience store. We enjoyed the California roll ahi poke, avocado ahi poke, oyster sauce ahi poke. I think Foodland has a better selection and the fish cuts seem bigger and a little fresher at Foodland. This place was around the corner from our condo, so definitely convenient. Make sure to come before 4pm to get a better selection. But my favorite is still Tamura's poke in the liquor store! read more

Within walking distance of many hotels...so you can get your drink on and not be chained to the hotel restaurant or bar. It might sound crazy, but Whalers has some of the best poké for the least amount of money anywhere in the area of Kahana // Lahaina. True to the name, this is a general store. You can find everything from milk to beach towels and everything in between. But in the last year, they started selling various flavors of poké at the front of the store. Unusual stuff like California roll poké with imitation crab meat, wasabi poké, along with some of the more traditional tastes you've seen elsewhere. With the option of getting 1/4 pound to a full LB, you can tailor your poké experience however you'd like. read more

They offer a variety of poke flavors and you can't go wrong with any of them. We get the wasabi flavor and eat it on crackers for a light meal on the beach. They also offer poke bowls over rice. Whaler's General Store seems to be the brand that is much more prevalent on Maui than anywhere else in Hawaii. Just like ABC Stores on Oahu, Whaler's General Store seems to be Maui's favorite. It's a nice general store that's pretty much like anywhere else that sells a variety of items to the tourist folk who come through Maui on a daily basis. I had some downtime here on Maui on one recent trip in January 2017, so I opted to take my time and money here to Whaler's General Store all the way up here past Kaanapali and into Kahana. I came here around 1:30pm after scouting out the shopping center here at the Kahana Gateway and I needed some stuff for the next morning. I came to Maui run the 2017 edition of the Maui Ocean Front 1/2 marathon and got to see marathon friends finish up their own individual quests of running 50 marathons in 50 states - just like me. I just needed some various items that were purchased at this Whaler's General Store location, since I was up here anyway, even though I was staying in Kihei. This Whaler's General Store is like any convenience store, where it sells anything from food items to Hawaii / Maui souvenirs, to random paraphernalia that people consume and use on a daily basis. Beach mats are towels are sold here, although it costs a bit more, but they do sell them here. The overall experience here at the Whaler's General Store at the Kahana Gateway shopping plaza was quite nice and average. It was during the middle of the day, so there wasn't much foot traffic here and it was almost empty when I was here. I needed some food stuff and drinks, which were kind of overpriced, but then again, it's the tourist area and Maui after all. Be prepared for that, especially where tourists usually roam, prices are higher, unfortunately. I must have spent about $12 for my stuff and spent about 45 minutes shopping and looking around, trying to make sure I needed what I came here to buy. The store itself was rather clean and organized. It's always cool to have cold drinks in the fridge, especially cold beer on demand. The service here was rather good and average too, as the cashier said Aloha to me and asked how my day is going. Thought that was pretty cool and it did make my day a little better. This Whaler's General Store is located at 4405 Honoapilani Highway in the comforts of Kahana Gateway shopping center. Just go Highway 30 westbound past the Kaanapali Beach resort complex for about 3 miles and you'll find the shopping center just fine, although you may need to keep your eyes out for it. This store accepts major credit cards, which is always a good thing. The parking here is very good, since there's generous parking options within the Kahana Gateway shopping center. Or there's suitable parking along the quiet residential / vacation condo areas of lower Hooanapilani area, that creeps along adjacent to Highway 30. If you don't mind making the drive here for your shopping here, this place is a cute cul-de-sac for anything you need on your vacation or staycation. I realize this Whaler's General Store is out of the way, especially when there is also one in Whaler's Village in the heart of Kaanapali Beach hotels, this one at the Kahana Gateway shopping center serves a niche for those vacationers who are in the area and for those who are in Kapalua. This Whaler's General Store is not small, so best bet is to shop here before the crowd and you'll be set for the day or week, depending on how long your Maui stay is for. For what its worth though, it pays to shop here and away from the hotels that tends to overprice everything.
