This little mom and pop shop is THE BEST! From the outside, you may just drive by and miss this place but it's such a gem. I was lucky to find this spot last minute when the original spot I was trying to eat at was closed. They open early, which makes it perfect to grab food on the go. There is poke, hot bentos, and many sides to choose from. Everything is nicely packaged for you to take home. It was great for my family to come pick and choose whatever they wanted. I opted for the Poke Bowl ($10.99) and you can choose up to two types of poke. I got the Spicy Ahi and Shoyu Ahi over a bed of warm rice. This was such a good deal and the cheapest poke bowl I've seen on the island. Plus, it tasted amazing although the rice could be softer. My parents also had the Breakfast Platter ($6.99), which filled them up. Since the macaroni salad had been out for a few days, we got it at a discounted rate. Since we were eating it right after we paid, it was such a steal for only $1 that we grabbed two of them. This spot is such a great find. I am happy that my original plan didn't work out now. We needed a place to stop by for a quick lunch after arriving at the airport before checking into our hotel. Saw that this place had inexpensive premade bento boxes and felt like that was the perfect quick meal. Chose the Lau Lau and dry noodle. Everything was so fresh! Dry noodles had a good amount of mixed ingredients including some spam and fish cake and wasn't bad. For a small portion, it was about $5. I was a little hesitant to try the Lau Lau bc I didn't see a ton of reviews about it, but because I love Lau Lau's I decided to try it anyway. It was a bit pricey for a place that wasn't a restaurant. But i appreciated that you get two Lau Laus for about $10. I'm SO glad we tried the Lau Lau! It was SO SO delicious! They had the best Lau laus we've had in Maui, Oahu or Kona! The pork was incredibly tender and juicy with good seasoning and they were generous with their meat portion. It was so good my mom kept saying how she loved it and she's hard to please. My only regret is that we didn't get another package of Lau Lau's!! It even beats the one we had from da kitchen which was less tender and more pricey. read more

Made the pilgrimage back to Maui, and this was the store we sought out to find. Our parents were from Makawao and Lahaina but we were raised in Honolulu. Dad made it a practice to stop here when we visited or at least that's what my siblings tell me. It's a small old store with all kinds of stuff. Local pickled foods and sukemono. Stuff you don't see in normal groceries. Our mom used to make pickled plums or get it from the honganji bizarre in upcountry Makawao. I didn't learn and don't even know where you would find the peach plums, so it's nice to find a place that sells it. Guy in the store said they get it from local suppliers so some are better than others. The local restaurants were all crowded with tourists and we were happy to pick up stuff from all over to make a nice potluck lunch. This store had a lot. Mostly locals in the store. Not a place for omiyage but lots of food at a nice price. Whoever made the smoke meat, great job. Super Ono. read more

Haven't been to Takamiyas in years. Glad to see nothing has changed. Still looks the same from the outside and in. I guess no broke , why fix. The only place I've loved so much to return multiple times during my trip to Maui! The small market is conveniently located not too far from the airport and was a go-to place to grab food in the morning before Road to Hana. The selection of hot pre-packaged food and desserts and poke was plentiful! The tako poke was delicious and had a strong sesame oil flavor (which I like) and the spicy tuna poke was delicious as well. The shoyu ahi poke was a little too salty for me but the flavor complimented the fish well. I also picked up a few breakfast/lunch items like pork and peas, musubi, and a breakfast plate which were quite comforting and filling for my trip. The desserts were the best part, I feel. They came in small packages which allowed me to try multiple. The lilikoi cheesecake and ube haupia were light, not too sweet, and a nice way to cool down in the heat. My favorite by far was the sweet potato mochi (it had a nice coconut exterior)! The service was excellent and I'm so glad I found this little gem in Wailuku. read more

After reading the reviews and seeing the prices, I couldn't believe it and had to see it for myself. Sure enough, their hot plates really do range from $3-7 which is absurd given the amount of food you get and the quality of it. This was a place I stopped at after hiking Waihee Ridge Trail and I got the chashu pork, fried fish plate, and smoked pork and all were delicious. Parking was not difficult and this is a quick stop and go place. I would highly recommend you come here before or after a day trip to wherever your plans take you as the food is hot and ready to go. I stopped by here yesterday with my wife in order to find dinner. We had found out about the Takamiya Market from Hawaii magazine and it's best of list for plate lunches. Since it was the only one we hadn't been to, we decided to give it a try. We arrived to the store at around 4 PM knowing that we might be a little late for their poke. Thankfully they still had some and we ultimately ending up ordering a 1/2 pound of the sesame tako and another 1/2 pound of vegetable tako. We also took the time to look around the store and what a cool place it was. They had a ton of what I would consider random food (although clearly not random) like cucumber Kim chee, pickled peaches, tapioca, blood sausage and more including giant containers of already marinating grade b teriyaki beef. Outside of the poke we also grabbed a lilikoi bar and then a couple of items from the hot foods area including a chicken katsu, a huli huli chicken and then a quick reduced teriyaki bento. We started off the evening by eating the chicken katsu which had a nice breading to it and we enjoyed dipping it into the accompanying BBQ sauce. After that we tried the Huli huli chicken which had a nice sweetness to it without being overpowering. After that we started into the sesame tako which had a nice soy like taste to it and the tako itself tasted smoked. Fourth was the vegetable tako which had the same Smokey flavor to the tako and I appreciated being able to eat vegetables with it. After that was the beef teriyaki which was surprisingly good. I assumed it was the same stuff that we had seen in the large containers in the store and it was nice that the flavor of teriyaki had really permeated through all of the meat and made it tender. Last but not least was the lilikoi bar. Like everything else, this was good and I enjoyed the tartness of the lilikoi with the shortbread base and thought it was a nice dessert for our meal. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. My wife and I certainly bought a hodge podge of stuff from the store here but we really enjoyed all of it! read more

We found it after hiking at the Iao Valley and it is just a short drive so perfect for lunch! There is no sit down area so be prepared to bring it elsewhere to eat. Solid 10/10 for both taste and price! A little hidden gem near my AirBnb. They have a wide variety of local food. They sell warm packed lunches, poke by the found and some refrigerated desserts. I had the tako, spicy tuna poke, shoyu tuna poke, ube, haupia and taro pudding and nothing was short of delicious!! With two scoops of warm rice (which they sell as well), it cost me about $23. You can't beat it! The marinades for the poke were both delicious. The ube and haupia dessert were smooth and flavorful. The tako had the perfect chew. There is nothing I would change. The workers and cashier were also extremely helpful and nice. I would recommend checking it out. read more

We went here at the recommendation of a restaurant who said they have the best macaroni salad on the island. It was certainly good, it had peas, potatoes and no onions which are disgusting. The price was good too, i think $5.99 for a decent container. I also got the Hawaiian plate lunch which had three different types of pork, including the best lau lau I've ever had for $16.99. The place looked pretty run down though and wasn't the cleanest. But it was certainly legit and seamed to be where the locals went. Would definitely go again to get more Mac salad! read more

Since 1948 and still serving. Maui's take on an okazuya. Again, thank you Jo Y for the recommendation. Note: Maui's okazuya's "package" items versus allowing customers to pick and choose. Flavors are strong and again, very sweet compared to Oahu owing once again to the different immigrant mix that settled the island. Regardless, inexpensive and very tasty. Old school at its best. The musubis, hand shaped (ie, wet the chawan, sprinkle salt, add hot rice, cover loosely with one hand and toss between the bowl and your cupped hand for just the right compaction vs smashing it in a plastic mold). It falls apart when you bite it but not in your fingers. Ume a nice touch. The fried chicken, marinated in grated fresh ginger before being coated in flour and fried. Slighty oily, but loaded with flavor. It taste great at room temp. Sweet, tender braised shoyu chicken finished on the grill, syrupy sweet teri beef, deeply flavored, sweet, tender shoyu pork. Solid old school poke (don't even think of asking for spicy ahi or salmon), tender tako caught in Maui waters, excellent smoked meat and a plethora of sweets from local shops throughout Wailuku. Lots of different goodies packed into a small space. Look everywhere (including around the registers) for more. Tip: Fully stocked ahead of lunch (10:30). Very friendly, local service, ie "eh bruddah, uncle made da dried tako (pointing to the old Japanese guy by the fish counter), if I was you, I'd get some. Ono". A piece of Maui's culinary past and based on how crowded it is, one that locals will not let die anytime soon. read more

Which other stores are open around 5am and ready to dish out ready made packaged dishes like spam, egg, bacon plates, fried chicken, and spam masubis? This place was on our way to the Road to Hana journey, and we stopped by for some snacks for the road. Super cute little shop, convenient, and nice staff. The food was okay-- the poke (tried ahi tuna and kimchi tako) was way too salty, the mac salad was nothing to write home about, and the spam masubi was satisfying but a bit on the plain side (no sauce, heavy on the rice to spam ratio). They had a dessert area too with homey looking cheesecakes. We liked the ube haupia that was beautifully purple and quite sweet. If we were to do it again, we'd stock up the night before from elsewhere... but if you're hankering for some hot eggs or aren't too picky with whatever warm breakfast is available, this small shop would be convenient and open early for you! read more

Where the locals go. Seriously - it's the gateway to Hawaiian Homestead Lands, so please be extremely respectful of the people, the culture and the roads here. We LOVE Takamiya market for their Ono bentos, their fundraising opportunities and their Dani's catering side. If you're up for dawn patrol and need something hot and fresh - they have it from 5am on. For fundraising - you can prepay for their delicious preseasoned hamburger steak or Teri meats. But we especially find their catering convenient and affordable. Partook: Ahi Poke Bowl ~$8 It was alright, I was thrown off a little when I notice that the rice was coming from prepacked small styrofoam covered in saran wrap. I'm used to having it serve from a rice cooker. I was trying my best to assess the quality of the rice but end up eating most of it. I am currently visiting Maui and have been studying around Wailuku. Takamiya Market opens pretty early around 0530. Parking stalls are available in front of the market. As you enter you'll notice the poke counter on your left and assorted bentos ahead. They have all kine in this store like produce, meat, fish, and kimchee. The prepacked meals here are cheap and delicious with full meals such as hot meatloaf with potatoes and gravy. Of course the sell various Hawaiian dishes and entrees as well. When I went to Takamiya Market yesterday, I had no expectations because I've never been here before. Upon entering, I noticed there was a really weird smell to the place. The market is very old-school which I thought was really cool. Tons of lunch plates and little sushi rolls were scattered which I thought I added a nice touch. The workers on the other hand didn't really care for helping me. I was asking them what they recommended and they kind of shrugged me off. I wouldn't stop here for lunch because of the inconvenient location on a side of a busy road, but I would take my family here at one point. Reviews on the food I purchased: Hamburger steak was really good. The meat was juicy and very tender which I really liked. The gravy was delicious and flavorful and I really enjoyed the composition. The fried rice was definitely moist which I liked and had a nice flavor. Not too salty and had just the right amount of ingredients. The tapioca on the other hand was very weird. I like tapioca but this one had weird chunks of Ube inside that did not sit well with me. read more

Aaaaah, like they say; "The 3rd time is the charm!" Gangees! Guess what? I GET DA GRINDZ! Lol! On the road again, and it's my 3rd trip this week since coming back from the mainland. Maui is the target today! While I was waiting to catch my plane this morning, my Yelp buddy - Dave F. gave me some tips for the grindz places on Maui! I swear, Dave F. must be my long lost bruddah from anodda modda cuz we have so much in common - 1. He fixes stuff for a living, so do I. 2. He has a Golden Retriever, so do I. 3. He likes Hot Rods, so do I. 4. He likes da old skool mom/pop grindz places, so do I. 5. And last of all.........he likes da green bottle (Heinekens), so do I. Well, not to get off on the subject cuz we talking about da grindz, but I gotta give proper props for my bruddah Dave, as he suggested Takamiya Market for a really good bento! Upon finishing a job in Wailuku this morning, I turn on my GPS on da phone, & navigate down to Takamiya Market. Funny, I've passed this little market plenty times, but I had no clue that this place serves up some really onolicious bentos, poke, pies, & other various types of meat...... Bear in mind, although they sell all these delicious items to eat, this is really a small little neighborhood supermarket where they sell fresh meat, fresh vegetables, & other grocery items. The market is tucked at the end of Market Street, where you kinda drive down a hill, into a residential neighborhood. Upon walking into the market, I make a bee-line to the several tables of Bento heaven!!!! Looking at the items, truthfully I wanted to buy them all, but I knew it would be impossible for me to consume them all! So........ I had to make the best decision I could at the time, and picked "Bento #2". What is in the "Bento #2" - you get white rice with furikake on top, fried chicken, teri beef, ginger, & kamaboko. All of this for just $6.39!!!! Upon walking towards the back of the store towards an open fridge section.........I see buku boxes of pies, and pre-cut pieces of pie. Upon looking at all the delicious desserts.........I was thinking I overlooked my Snow Puffies the other day when I was at Paalaa Kai Bakery, so I figured I'd mine as well make it up by getting something here today, so I picked up a "Pumpkin Crunch". It was so cheap, just $1.65. What can I say about the GRINDZ? - I gonna say it again.........."I GET DA GRINDZ!" YO!!!! Lol! The rice was so fluffy & soft; the fried chicken surprised me, as when I bit into it, the skin was still crunchy! How's that for chicken in a bento? The teri beef was soft, and the marinade was awesome!!!! The bento was the perfect breakfast for me! And to top off my meal, having the pumpkin crunch was good........but it won't replace my beloved "Snow Puffie". But I liked it was it was sweet, yet salty! How's that you say? Well, the pumpkin part was so sweet, and it didn't even look like the can pumpkin stuff. I wonder if they made it from scratch? The crust, on the bottom had a little saltiness to it, which complemented the pie perfectly! Man........I was so satisfied with my bento & pie, I had to sit for a while & loosen my belt buckle by one notch! Aaaaaaah! There is limited parking here. The supermarket does have a small private parking lot across the street, or you can find street parking near by.
