As I was shopping, two employees hovered closely and circled around me multiple times, fixating on my hands and arms without offering any assistance or even a shopping basket despite a few items in my hands that I was fully intending to purchase. I had my personal bag over my arm and was taking photos to share with my mom, who was also interested in purchasing items as well. Being scrutinized like this felt invasive and unsettling, especially when other shoppers in the store seemed to shop freely with their personal bags, totes, and strollers. When I questioned if there was an issue after circling around me not once, but 4 times, the 2 female employees acted confused, but their behavior was unmistakably targeted. Seeing that similar reviews from a year ago highlight the same issue, it is clear nothing has changed. This pattern of behavior feels like an enabling of racial profiling, which is deeply disappointing, particularly when the store is aiming to celebrate and promote culture through their World Cup merchandise and LA Dodger gear. As a Latina, I had simply hoped for a welcoming and appreciative shopping experience but left feeling upset and excluded. I hope this review encourages The Grove to reflect on their staff training and work towards creating a more inclusive environment for all customers. I'd definitely send my merch to this store again to pick up any online orders since couriers outside of USPS are horrible with delivering orders where I live (gated community). Nowadays streetwear trends have shifted, blurring the line between casual fashion and high fashion. It's made its way into high fashion, collaborating with major fashion heavyweights like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Vetements, etc. to list a few. Kings to me is what pure streetwear is all about at its core. No bots, no asinine reseller mark-ups, no insane pricetags, no bullshit. Just tried and true streetwear styles from iconic streetwear brands that have withstood the test of time. I'm thankful Kings and others like it still exist (Proper, BAIT, Bowls LA and Union are both kind of). I say kind of because Bowls opens whenever they want and Union definitely has a certain audience in mind with the brands they carry. Anyway, maybe I'm looking back at the history of streetwear with rose-tinted glasses, but there's no denying that the fact that a place like Kings can still thrive despite the fact that a lot of boutiques I used to frequent have either shifted to online exclusively or just shuttered their doors permanently is respectable.
