At first, I thought I was imagining it, so I deliberately walked to a different area to see if they would continue. They did. They tried to cover it up by constantly asking if we needed help. Within about five minutes, my friend and I were asked three separate times if we needed assistance. They also kept pretending to straighten merchandise and put items back on shelves right next to me while watching us. It was obvious what they were doing. My friend and I got so irritated that we just left without buying anything. It was clear we weren't welcome there. It's sad because I used to come here all the time in high school and throughout my 20s. I don't know what happened to this place, but they clearly racially profile their customers. You would think a store that sells so many products promoting inclusion and progressive values, especially in such a liberal city, would hold itself to the same standard. This is covert racism, and I will never be coming back to this establishment. Do better.

I'd definitely send my merch to this store again to pick up any online orders since couriers outside of USPS are horrible with delivering orders where I live (gated community). Nowadays streetwear trends have shifted, blurring the line between casual fashion and high fashion. It's made its way into high fashion, collaborating with major fashion heavyweights like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Vetements, etc. to list a few. Kings to me is what pure streetwear is all about at its core. No bots, no asinine reseller mark-ups, no insane pricetags, no bullshit. Just tried and true streetwear styles from iconic streetwear brands that have withstood the test of time. I'm thankful Kings and others like it still exist (Proper, BAIT, Bowls LA and Union are both kind of). I say kind of because Bowls opens whenever they want and Union definitely has a certain audience in mind with the brands they carry. Anyway, maybe I'm looking back at the history of streetwear with rose-tinted glasses, but there's no denying that the fact that a place like Kings can still thrive despite the fact that a lot of boutiques I used to frequent have either shifted to online exclusively or just shuttered their doors permanently is respectable. It's amazing how a company can spend millions on branding and still make a paying customer feel like a criminal for trying to return an item.
