The restaurant was also very clean Unfortunately, the food was really disappointing--far, far, far too oily--to the point that oil was really the only flavor you could taste and I even felt like I smelled of canola oil when we got home. Family and I tried What Dak Korean Fried Chicken after school today and we loved it! So happy to have a KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) joint in town and close to us. I can see us frequently dining here. There's two kiosks to order at when you walk in to the left but you can also order at the counter. K Pop music from back in our high school days ('99) was playing and it was a perfect spot for the kids and us to hang out and wait for the food very family-friendly atmosphere Food: Bulgogi - Delicious and not as sweet as others I've tried but still has the sweetness that it's known for with a great amount of veggies as well Wings - got the 8 pc "small" half soy garlic/half spicy order and they were crispy and delicious. Definitely worth getting Pork Bao Buns - Sliced Pork Belly with their signature coleslaw and sauce drizzled inside. Hubby and I both loved it. Tteokbokki - Stir-fried rice cakes with fish cake, veggies and topped with cheese. I overheard someone saying it was too spicy for them, so wanted to just let people know that this dish has a nice kick to begin with because the sauce is made with Gochujang which is a Korean Red Pepper Paste. Can always add more spice but can't take out the spice from what the base gochujang sauce has, so you have been forewarned. It was not spicy to me at all and had a great kick with the right amount of sweet and savory from the sauce. The rice cakes were perfectly chewy as well. Korean Cheese Balls - oldest son loved this. A chewy, sweet fried batter with cheese on the inside Korean Corn Dog - two of my sons loved this Seasoned Fries - all three sons smashed two orders of this and seriously wanted more. My husband and I tried What Dak in West Des Moines for dinner last night and we kind of liked it. They don't just serve Korean food. They have traditional stuff like bulgogi and japchae, nontraditional food like fried chicken, tacos, sliders and corn dogs and non-Korean food like pork buns and potstickers. I got the japchae and my husband got the pork buns. We both liked what we ordered and would get them again. However, with me being the stickler that I am about Korean food, I didn't think the japchae was the best I've ever had. That would be my mom's. Her food is the gold standard to which I will forever compare everyone else's Korean food. To me, the noodles tasted like there was one essential ingredient missing. I can't put my finger on it but I definitely noticed it. It was still very tasty, though. My husband liked his pork buns but they didn't look like they had as much pork in them as their photos on their website showed. This place is a fast/casual restaurant in a strip mall. For that reason, we thought their prices were a little on the high side. My japchae with bulgogi in it was $14.95. I was expecting a little bigger portion than what I received for that price. They don't have a soda fountain so you have to buy bottled drinks if you want any. They did have $.50 bottles of water, so I was glad about that. My dish came out pretty fast but my husband had to wait quite awhile for his. I was almost done with my food by the time he got his. They served our food in to go containers even though we were dining in. They also gave us paper plates but we didn't use them because our food was already in plastic containers and we didn't see the need to dirty the plates. The place is bright and colorful and kind of small. I think there were probably eight tables. All of the the employees we dealt with were friendly and courteous. We liked the food enough to come back again but there weren't enough traditional dishes on their menu to entice me to come back very soon. For people looking for just traditional Korean food, you might not like this. But for the average person who's curious about Korean food or street food, you may want to try this. read more

We got the large Korean fried chicken half/half of spicy and soy garlic. The chicken has a thin layer of breading which I thoroughly enjoyed -- some places have far too thick breading. The spicy had a slight kick (we love spicy food). The pickled radish was not good. I think it needed to be more pickled? I wish they had an option to have spring onions topped on the chicken. The food is consistently good. The loaded fries are one of my favorites. The bulgogi is seasoned well and obviously slow cooked because it is always tender. The bulgogi fried rice is delicious and so is the bulgogi. This is a great place to eat while in Des Moines. read more

We have been talking about going to What Dak for a long time. The food was delicious. We the pork buns, Dak loaded fries and the 8 pcs wings (half soy garlic and half spicy.) The wings were nice and crispy. The soy garlic was my favorite. The wings were steaming hot. The fries were crispy even though they were topped with delicious sauce, sliced meat, and cheese. For the price, I thought the servicing size was on the small side. There are definitely more items on their menu I would like to try. Great place. Owner was very kind and friendly. We thought the music was a bit too loud and they turned it down immediately. They all came by to see if we needed anything and asked how we liked it. I had the chicken sliders with ginger soy sauce and the cheese balls. Both were different than I thought but super delicious! Next time I plan to have what the are know for and that is the wings! Parking: tons of space since it's located in a strip of stores. Ordering: so many different ways to order and SO convenient! We ordered online via their app for pickup. In the app you can earn points and rewards and every first order via the app gets free fries. (Idk if that's a permanent thing or not so fyi). Otherwise they're fast casual, so in-store they have a few kiosks to order from when you walk in on the left or you can order at the counter with a human. They'll call your name/number once ready. Service: even tho they were super swamped they were so nice and quick. They even apologized for the barely 1-2 extra minute wait past pickup time which was completely fine! Seating: they had a handful of booths and maybe a couple low top tables. A decent amount of seating for a fast casual place! Food: I was craving a bao bun and these were pretty good! One order contains three buns and they were full of flavor. I almost think they could make the buns smaller to have a more equal buns to insides ratio. Their seasoned fries were really good and not too salty with just the right amount of seasoning. They tasted familiar, but couldn't put my finger on it. The chicken coating was really delicious, flavorful, and crispy. It seemed like maybe it could use a little more chicken meat, but it could just be the one I tried! Overall: I really enjoyed the whole experience from ordering to the food. I'll be back to try more items for SURE. Food was okay but not amazing. Wings weren't really korean style wings more something you can get at a sports bar or a chain like buffalo wild wings. They only offer bottled drinks so if you want water you gotta pay 50 cents for regular bottled water. I made the mistake of using their self service kiosk since the girl at the register was busy on the phone taking an order. First, the self service doesn't give you options for drinks so you would have had to just go up to the register to buy it anyway. Then I picked dine in but my order apparently wasn't received for a good 20 minutes by the kitchen so we got a text saying our food wouldn't be ready for an additional 30 minutes. A worker noticed us sitting at a booth for a while so she checked and explained to us their online server was being slow and they didnt get our order in time. Worker was at least nice but they should probs check their operations of the POS system if it's causing that significant of a delay in receiving orders. Besides the wings I got the katsu over rice. It was dry and sad. I didnt even finish it cause it just made me depressed after having to wait so long. George gives it .5 chomps out of 3 chomps. read more

First and foremost - this is one of the few places in the DSM metro claiming to have *real* Korean Fried Chicken that seems to be able to deliver on that. I tried Harbinger (also owns Basic Bird- I have not tried yet) a while back and their attemp at "KFC" was a travesty at best. That is a different review for another time though. Wat Dak's chicken is not only GENEROUS sized Drummies (flats are also decent size, but you will know if what I mean when you order the drumsticks) but always fresh, delicious and consistent (I've been there 3 times now). You may have to wait for the chicken but it is absolutely worth it! The flavors of the sauces and breading, the crispy/crunchy texture is perfect. Make sure to ask for gloves if you are eating in house, things will get messy! (This is a good thing). Important detail that I love and is 100% traditional - they offer pickled radish (치킨무) as a side with the chicken (or coleslaw if you prefer). I also always order the Tteokbokki (떡볶이) and am always in love with it. They give you fish cakes, a little cheese on top, and two Gimmari (김 말이) added in. Just spicy enough, delicious sauce, perfectly pillowy and chewy rice cakes. We always order white rice to go with our meals and it's always perfectly cooked. If you Dine in- restaurant is always clean, ambiance is more modern and minimal, very cool! Staff is always very friendly, and it's located in a strip mall/plaza so there is plenty of parking! We got 16 pieces of chicken and this is the tiny (not even a forkful) amount of coleslaw they gave us. I ain't here for the first time I did delivery. The food had no taste. It was cold. The chicken was so dry. I could barely eat it and it had a weird sour taste for the first time and I understand my delivery isn't gonna be fresh but they could at least done better Packing it because it was like the sauce was all leaked in the bags. For $25, we got 4 chicken legs, 4 small drummies, and four wings. I can get 3lbs. of chicken legs at our most expensive grocery store for $6.00. I know, I know, I've already lost some of you because we don't want to cook our own food all the time! But can we start being upset about the cost of some of these meals we are being sold! We also didn't get the pickled radish that was suppose to come with our order. The music was way too loud, while we waited for our "10 minute" Togo order.
