This is the grilled chicken burger (part of the combination) with Swiss cheese
    Robert G.

Whataburger in warm places - 1 of 2 I'm a native of Southern California who doesn't think that In 'N' Out is "all that and a bag of chips." I like it, but I don't love it. I am much more apt to patronize a Whataburger when I'm in an area where they are located. And that's what I did on South Padre Island. I ate at this location three times, if I recall. In 'N' Out does not have chicken sandwiches. Whataburger does. Each time, I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich combination and had it customized by having them add pickles to it. The grilled chicken sandwich is very good, while the fries and the soft drink are boilerplate, meaning reliable and predictable. Whataburger also has breakfast fare, should you want that. So far, it sounds like 3 stars. However, a few other things come into play. The pricing is fair. The location is bright and has an almost convivial atmosphere, with many tourists and locals eating in the restaurant. (There is a drive-through.) Their hours are generous and they are open late into the evening. The service has always been very pleasant. They bring the order to your table and an employee shows up with a small tray from which you can select and ask for condiments. I now can't help but think how we take this for granted when, should you visit a McDonald's in Italy, you have to pay for each packet of ketchup individually - even if you order items such a french fries - which I find reprehensible. And, here, Italy is almost synonymous with tomato sauce. But, then, this is magnanimous Texas, so the condiments, part and parcel of most fast food meals, are provided for the customer, as is the situation in most of North America. Given its geographic location, feel free to use the Spanish you have learned here. However, at the front counter, that won't be necessary. Compared to other geographic places where employees might feel patronized, this gregarious and welcoming area rolls with it quite well and Spanish is widely spoken in the Rio Grande Valley. I was trying to make a point of eating at different indie locales, but then couldn't decide or it got late. That said, if I came back to this Whataburger several times, that must mean I liked what I ate and found it to be a reliable fast food restaurant.

Great day for the island to celebrate mom.

Great day great place. Fast food parking available. Option on drive thru. Food warm and good service.

Toss up between a 2 and 3. Fries and service sucked (well not for the man worming the drive thru he was nice it just took forever). Cookies are good! But the teens working inside were not nice and honestly shouldn't be worming a customer service job if they don't want to even say hello. Burger was decent.

I have been here in south padre a few days now and the places people have been telling us to go to…read moreeat have been very mediocre..however after reading the reviews on Mahi Nics I knew we had to try it out. This is my kind of place, chill vibe at the marina, looking at beautiful boats on the water. The food was outstanding! we had blackened shrimp tacos and blackened mahi tacos with a side of chips and pico, (all freshly made) and 2 frozen drinks that tasted like dessert. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!! And I am not exaggerating, it has been the best food I have had since I landed here. Do yourself a favor and get out of the crappy strip mall restaurants and give this place a go. It feels like you are on vacation and it won't break the bank either...very reasonably priced for the amount of food you receive and the quality of the food. I wish I took photos but I was so hungry when I arrived and kind of forgot.. highly recommend!

Unfortunately, we found the food a bit underwhelming compared to some of the other restaurants we visited during our stay. We ordered the mahi tacos, and while the sauce was nice, the tacos came out somewhat cold. They weren't bad, but they just didn't leave much of an impression. The service was alright as well. We arrived about 10 minutes after opening and ended up standing around for a bit before someone came over to take our order. Overall, we loved the ambiance and location, but the food and service didn't quite measure up to some of the other spots we tried in South Padre.

The atmosphere was fantastic, especially with the ocean breeze coming through. We ordered the steamed mussels, the grilled red snapper sandwich, and the grilled red snapper entrée. Our favorite dish was the red snapper sandwich. It tasted fresh and had more of a homestyle feel rather than something overly polished from a professional kitchen, which we really appreciated. Honestly, everything tasted fresh, comforting, and well prepared. The service was also incredible throughout the night. The only slight issue we had was spotting a cockroach crawl from under one of the chairs when we pulled it out. However, considering the restaurant is basically right on the beach and outdoors, insects are somewhat expected, and it honestly didn't take away from the experience for us. Overall, great atmosphere, great food, and a really enjoyable dinner spot in South Padre.

It's not much to look at, small, simple, not a whole lot of improvements over the years. But, they did have plastic flaps that dropped down on the outside of the place to keep the wind and cold weather out, heaters provided too! Service by Aaron was top notch, start to finish! We initially just decided to stay to a drink and move on ... but as we sat there and looked at the menu, sipped our drinks, we saw other food coming out of the kitchen! It looked GREAT! We ordered the crispy oyster tapas (fried oysters on homemade potato chips with mango pico). They came out quickly and were oh so tasty! We were convinced! Time for dinner! We ordered a rueben sandwich (with homemade parmesan potato chips) and the snapper veracruz (tomato, onion, olives, capers) with grilled zucchini. The sandwich was da bomb ... piled high corned beef, kraut and dressing, pickles on the side. The snapper dish is one we make at home, and this one was darn good! So, glad we stayed! This place puts to shame some of the other "fancy" places on SPI! "Don't judge a book by its cover" rings true here! Highly recommend you try the Cafe! We'll be back for sure ...

The fried fish tacos were absolutely incredible and easily the star of the meal. The grilled fish tacos weren't quite as amazing, but they were still fresh and delicious. The real MVP, though, is the green cilantro sauce--they seriously need to bottle it and sell it in stores! And if you like a little heat, the red chipotle sauce is spicy but packed with incredible flavor. The service is wonderful and I absolutely appreciate the wonderful ladies helping us make these great choices! If you eat at one place while on the island let it be here!

Mexican plate, $13.90:Tostada -- really good, Beans -- fine, Rice -- fine, Enchiladas -- just slightly better than frozen. Fettuccine Alfredo, $16.99 (+$4.99 chicken add-on) -- my daughter got this and it was one of the better things on the menu. She finished the whole plate. Nacho trio, $15.99 -- the salsa was fine, the guac was really good, but the queso was a 1-star. This is one of those places that doesn't know how to do queso but puts it on the menu anyway. More like just melted Velveeta. Beyond the food being mediocre at best, we had a few service issues. My order came out wrong, I asked for cheese and got beef enchiladas. I'd also ordered a drink that never came; when the server finally made another round, I asked about it so she finally put it in. Service was pretty slow and a few things came out wrong, but we were hungry and it was so busy that we didn't really bother making a fuss. In general it's probably okay food for the island, but I would not return.

We'd chartered a fishing trip and had some fresh fillets, so we did their hook-and-cook deal. Hook & cook, $11.99/person -- they'll cook all your fish however you want it, and it comes with sides, sauces, and a drink. I asked for tortillas on the side so we could make fish tacos. Good value, and the food they cooked for us was solid all around. We had a mix of sides -- french fries, onion rings, rice, beans, and fried okra -- all pretty good. On the fish prep: the fried was probably the best, the grilled was fine, and the blackened was my least favorite. Service was really efficient and nice -- the lady working the front counter was super helpful and very nice. The place was clean, the restroom was clean, plenty of tables for large groups, and a large bar area. I also noticed they have happy hour specials. The one downside: the salsa/sauce selection was pretty much nonexistent -- just Tapatío, and the sauces that came with the hook-and-cook were a low-end cocktail and tartar sauce. Honestly that's the one thing about the whole island -- nobody seems to have any good salsa. In general, if you're doing a hook-and-cook, I'd suggest coming here. Would recommend for that, and I'd return if I were doing it again.

Browsed the menu & ended up just getting their "tossed salad". I asked what was on it which was; sliced tomato, shredded carrot, red onion & cucumber. Opted out of the cucumber & requested two blue cheese dressings. My husband ordered their cheeseburger dressed with pepper jack cheese. My salad arrived fairly quickly & it was on a flat plate with a weak portion for $7.75. The two dressings were in taco cups over flowing with a hefty amount of fresh blue cheese crumbles packed on top. Super disappointed with not only the presentation, the cost & never being asked if I wanted my salad prior or when my husband received his meal. I ended up pushing it to the side & was waiting for our waitress to return to not only ask if my husband would like another beer, but to also provide the option of not eating that ridiculous amount of rabbit food-getting a refund OR to bring out more lettuce & ask to please just bring out standard blue cheese dressing without the added amount of crumbled cheese. We don't see our server for sometime, so I went to the hostess asking if she were also the manager which she stated she wasn't & that they were at the bar. That's when our server came up behind me & asked if there was a problem. I explained the situation to her, then she tells me that this dressing is always served this way and that, that is what blue cheese dressing is! She seemed confused about the crumbles & was almost trying to mock me. I've worked in the food industry & know how these product come into the restaurants. Blue cheese dressing does have blue cheese "chucks" within the original recipe. If you are doing things differently then that, it should stand out more on their menu as "homemade" and again expressed by the server, but she made it as if I were just suppose to know their process. It's salad dressing, it shouldn't be this difficult! LOL After this fiasco, they brought more salad and a watered down milky dressing that had zero flavor and zero cheese along with sliced cucumber?! The consistency was like milk. It was running, bland, NO blended cheese in the base-it definitely wasn't blue cheese dressing! WT?! This ALL transpired while my husband was still waiting on his burger & fries . About another 15 minutes goes by, I finally had to just start in on the bland salad. My husband's beer still sat empty & was never told when his burger would be served the few times are server swung by regarding my order issues. 20 minutes later, she comes by again & he was asked if it was cheddar cheese & he said, "no it was pepper jack". A total of 30 minutes he waited for a very rare burger, cold fries & FINALLY another beer! Terrible service and food wasn't very good either.
