I arrived just before noon wanting to buy lunch at the drive through. The parking lot was not full, but I was partially covered in sand from having been to the beach. As I pulled into the one working drive through lane, there was one car ahead of me at the place where you order. I could see two other cars between him and the first window. I waited, and waited some more. The line did not move for over 20 minutes. Either the employees were inept or extremely short handed. Either way, it was unacceptable. There are two lanes at the drive through. The right hand lane was blocked with cones. Since I was blocked in the left lane of the drive through with cars both in front and behind me, I had to get imaginative to escape before 30 minutes had passed waiting in the same spot. I finally got out of my car, moved the cones from the right lane, and maneuvered my car out and left. I am sure that this Whataburger was simply having a bad day. I would like to think other customers have a better experience and enjoy a nice meal here. Since this was a weekend and traffic was horribly congested all over the island, perhaps their employees were having a difficult time getting to work. All I know is I will not return to this Whataburger unless I've been assured there is different management. read more

This is great fast food in Texas. So the food quality is the usual goodness. Late night food stop and service was friendly. Started out kinda empty for during the week and quickly picked up about 930pm! Full store! Will say though that store was still with a dirty dining area before crowd and worse after. I had not been to a Whataburger for over 30 years. Decided to give it a try while I was on South Padre Island. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. The burger was OK, nothing special. The fries were very good. They came to us piping hot. For the meal deal you got a soda, which was medium size but very large. My daughter ordered the barbecue chicken sandwich, which was basically fried chicken strips with barbecue sauce on a toasted bread. They had music playing on the speakers extremely loud. It was even hard to carry on a conversation. Most of the tables were empty, but we're very dirty. Needed to be wiped off. All in all it was OK but nothing that I would be in a hurry to come back for. read more

Whataburger in warm places - 1 of 2 I'm a native of Southern California who doesn't think that In 'N' Out is "all that and a bag of chips." I like it, but I don't love it. I am much more apt to patronize a Whataburger when I'm in an area where they are located. And that's what I did on South Padre Island. I ate at this location three times, if I recall. In 'N' Out does not have chicken sandwiches. Whataburger does. Each time, I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich combination and had it customized by having them add pickles to it. The grilled chicken sandwich is very good, while the fries and the soft drink are boilerplate, meaning reliable and predictable. Whataburger also has breakfast fare, should you want that. So far, it sounds like 3 stars. However, a few other things come into play. The pricing is fair. The location is bright and has an almost convivial atmosphere, with many tourists and locals eating in the restaurant. (There is a drive-through.) Their hours are generous and they are open late into the evening. The service has always been very pleasant. They bring the order to your table and an employee shows up with a small tray from which you can select and ask for condiments. I now can't help but think how we take this for granted when, should you visit a McDonald's in Italy, you have to pay for each packet of ketchup individually - even if you order items such a french fries - which I find reprehensible. And, here, Italy is almost synonymous with tomato sauce. But, then, this is magnanimous Texas, so the condiments, part and parcel of most fast food meals, are provided for the customer, as is the situation in most of North America. Given its geographic location, feel free to use the Spanish you have learned here. However, at the front counter, that won't be necessary. Compared to other geographic places where employees might feel patronized, this gregarious and welcoming area rolls with it quite well and Spanish is widely spoken in the Rio Grande Valley. I was trying to make a point of eating at different indie locales, but then couldn't decide or it got late. That said, if I came back to this Whataburger several times, that must mean I liked what I ate and found it to be a reliable fast food restaurant. read more

Well done, Mgr.Ramon Torres & SPI WB Crew! Our group of 9 had our meal before we were done filling our drink. Order was correct, food was hot, service was pleasant... even threw in a free extra fry. Restrooms were clean, parking was right off the main drag, staff was functioning like a well-oiled machine. The bread did not taste fresh. It was not toasted just barely warmed and not warm when it got to me. The meat was overcooked and hard. The vegetables were scarce. I am currently waiting in the drive thru line and they only have it to one lane... the lady came outside and skipped me and got 3 cars behind me so I had to wait to get to the speaker. The 3 cars go in front of me and are now receiving their food first before me. This is not ok I was not acknowledged whatsoever I've been waiting for 40 minutes and none of the cars have been moving. Tonight I wanted to stay in my room and watch a movie and decided to order for pickup, something from WHATABURGER. I ordered the cobb Salad, small choc malt and small french fry. It takes me 6 mins door to door. If you could imagine leaving french fries in your car for a couple hours and what would you expect this food experience to be like. YES. stiff, barely warm and if there were such a thing as food with the consistency of card board-this is what these fries were like. Absolutely horrible, they completely missed two of my orders. They even messed up our two other orders as well and didn't give us what we asked for even though we were charged for it. After we asked nicely for our orders they gave us the smallest chicken strips I've seen in my life they were literally chicken nuggets. Literally the worst whataburger I've ever been to. I'm used to waiting in the drive through for long times but this place just didn't have their sh** together. I'm a big whataburger fan but they don't have any near where I live so I hopped at the chance to go there when I was at South Padre Island. It was just as good as I expected. I understand that Whataburger is a Texas icon. I have no problem with the food, but in comparison to what I consider the top of the fast food "food pyramid", In and Out Burger, it just doesn't get there. They have a large selection of unique items, but they all pretty much taste the same. Their burgers are large and filling, but they just don't have the umph that a double-double with cheese. Grilled onions, animal style does........ This was not a bad experience today and please understand that this food is much better than a lot of other fast food, but it just doesn't work for me.
