Zach did the winterization and noted there were a few items that needed to be fixed come Spring. Now that it's Spring, we worked with Dave, who is very patient, to come up with a plan. Zach came back to turn on the system and make those repairs. The job/s were done with great care, efficiency, while also answering our many questions. :) All the fixes were repaired and the sprinklers adjusted for maximum coverage and in perfect working order. After 20 years I was unable to maintain the water level in my koi pond as my rock and mortar waterfall had weathered and was leaking. I hired Whatcom Landscapes to take on the task of resealing the waterfall. Since it was a small job, needing only one employee, Zach was sent to complete the job. A few observations were immediately noted: Zach arrived on time, he parked his company truck on the road rather than come up my driveway and damaging low hanging fruit tree limbs (this now entailed more work on his part as he had to carry his equipment up the hill), he was pleasant/respectful, and he listened to my expectations and followed through with my instructions. The waterfall required pressure washing to remove the crud, but a bit of finesse was needed to get rid of the debris and yet not damage the existing mortar. The rocks and mortar then required hand brushing with a cleaning solution to remove algae and years of build up. Zach didn't have much space in which to maneuver and he was bent over on his hands and knees scrubbing while making sure not a drop of the liquid dripped into the pond where koi were swimming. Once the waterfall was clean each and every crack had to be caulked. This was a back breaking effort and again Zach had very little space in which to move. By now I was so impressed with the meticulous manner in which Zach was completing the job I stopped hovering and left the area. My waterfall restoration was in good hands. I am more than pleased with the completion of the job and I wouldn't hesitate to hire Whatcom Landscapes for future work. Thank you! read more

The job that my mother and I requested was not considered to be a huge job compared to others. But, we were impressed that Whatcom Landscapes treated us with as much respect and professionalism as they would a larger job. Many thanks go out to Austin and Ben. Austin supervised his team well and communicated with my mother as to why certain specific plants were planted where they would look attractive. Some companies talked about which plants would be "deer resistant" but Whatcom Landscapes actually knew their stuff. They were courteous, knowledgeable, and **gasp** on time & on the right day! The reason we found this surprising was because we had noticed a sense of "flakiness" and carelessness among a lot of PNW companies and industries in general -- both the lack of punctuality and in the haphazard/incomplete service provided, which would then require *more* work and $$ just to get up to standard. So, to have a company be punctual AND perform an outstanding job was a refreshing change. Perhaps the current generation might consider this OCD, anal-retentive, and above-and-beyond. But, I believe that a job well done should be the norm and the everyday expectation. Blame me for being an Eagle Scout. Am I wrong? read more

These guys did a landscape job for me a few years ago and did a great job. This time, I needed a DIY flagstone patio re-set, leveled and a new path created to the patio. We moved into a 20-year old home in Whatcom County in May, 2019. The landscape was overgrown, some trees needed removal, the irrigation system needed maintenance, and the water features needed upkeep and upgrades. Knowing no one, we turned to social media sites for reviews, and solicited bids from three different companies. We chose Whatcom Landscapes, and are quite glad we did. To begin, they have excellent customer service. Whether meeting on site with David or Jon regarding work needing to be done, we always get a quick response via phone, and a site visit withing 48 hours. When the irrigation was leaking water and flooding our neighbor's yard--basically, an emergency, they were there in an hour. Additionally, all the people who have worked at our home take the time to walk though the job with us, checking in at least a couple of times a day to make sure we are happy with what they're doing. Moreover, they advise, explaining why something should be done one way rather than another. We learned much about proper pruning from Justin (a master pruner) and pond structure from Brent (who rebuilt everything). As a result, we would sometimes adjust our work order because we realized what we thought would be good wouldn't be. Whatcom Landscape now maintains everything on our property except for the lawn, which they would do, except we decided to keep the former owner's long-time lawn maintenance employee because we just like him. One day, though, we expect Whatcom Landscape to take over this aspect of maintenance, too. We believe their prices are fair--sort of in the middle of the bids we received. We believe one often gets what one pays for. We were wary when a company said they could remove four large trees (each 20-25 feet tall; up against the house), grind the stumps, clean up, and haul away the debris for a non-binding $1,200.00. That's a lot of money, but from experience, we knew it was a low bid. (The high bid was around $2,400.00.) Whatcom's binding bid was about $1,900.00. They did a great job, and the clean-up was spectacular. Do know this: They really clean up after themselves. My neighbors were most grateful for the clean-up on their side of the fence after a substantial hedge trimming. In short, then, this is a company we recommend without reservation. read more

Tearing down 40 year old split rail and fence and building a custom fence line that matched our home, repairing a collapsed retaining wall next to the pond and under our patio, building a gorgeous new stone wall around our driveway landscaping, cutting and placing new sod, using my own wrought iron panel to make a beautiful gate to my front garden! Whatcom Landscapes did a large project for us in the Summer of 2020. This project involved removing a rotting wooden retaining wall and rebuilding it with Allan block. Also we had their team build a 10' x 70' enclosed garden and gate off our back yard. The bid was fair, the team showed up on time, worked diligently, and demonstrated outstanding workmanship. We noticed that one of the pieces of wood had a blemish on it and brought it to their attention. Within 24 hrs, the post was removed and replaced. Upon final inspection, Austin noted some scratching on the black deco wire fence panel. He was not satisfied with its appearance and had his team replace the panel.
