I came here because they seemed to carry sightly larger bulk sizes of things like almond flour and coconut sugar. It's a market, so they have a produce section, dried goods section and more. That also have a (breakfast) taco bar, and a food warming station stocked with hot sandwiches and the like. Someone there suggested to get a Seitan Ruben, but it turned out to be a terrible decision. I think the bread part was ok, but the innards had a nasty sour flavor that wasn't really from the sauce. The sauce was not uniformly distributed; one side was very saucy. It was pretty disgusting and ended up passing through my system pretty quickly. We also grabbed a hot chicken sandwich. Because they wrap their sandwiches in paper lined foil, the latter one was soggy. It pales in comparison to chicken sandwiches at Popeyes or Chick-fil-A. However, we did spot flan from a local producer we enjoyed from one of the farmers markets, so not all was lost. Parking is plentiful. If you want to eat here, there is an eating area near the entrance. In that area, they have paintings from local artists. The bathrooms are reasonably clean. I would need to return again to assess whether or not to include the grocery portion of the store as a grocery shopping option. So far the prepared foods are a no-go. read more

Wheat Seville held their annual Holiday stroll and sample event. There were many great vendors there, all providing an opportunity to sample their wonderful products. All of the vendors were friendly and gracious with their samples. Hummus by Dad's Best Hummus, using an authentic recipe straight from Lebanon. "Fresh Organic Hummus for a Healthier You" consists of Organic Garbanzo Beans, Organic Tahini, Organic Extra Virgin Cold PrOlive Oil, Sea Salt, Organic Citric Acid, & Fresh Garlic. He served it on Morton's glutenfree crackers. Yummy! Rebel Cheese, with their amazing "not cheese" creations, including Cave-Aged Brie, Smoked Cheddar, Truffle Chèvre, Pepper Jack, and Gruyère. How do they do it? Kelly's Killer Popcorn (Scary Good Gourmet Popcorn) comes in a variety of flavors: Cheddar Cheese, Dill Pickle, Queso Blanco, and Boney Sopapilla Caramel. I preferred the savory varieties. Trek Natural Foods showcased many of its spices in cooked and raw foods: salads, hummus, wings, dips and squash. Creature Coffee was there, serving a variety of coffees and matcha beverages. Felafelicious - their name says it all! They had felafel samples that were wholesome, simple, and delicious. This authentic falafel is a vegan, gluten-free, high-protein, and high-fiber snack. They had a nice crunchy outside and soft inside. Kessho Artisinal Chocolates offered a variety of unique Asian-inspired flavors like dark chocolate with yuzu, black sesame, and matcha. That's just a sampling of the vendors. Wheatsville is one of my favorite places to shop. Now that I don't live close by, I stop in every time I have to go in to Austin for work. The popcorn tofu lives in infamy. I always buy a bunch at a time and keep them in my freezer for a quick Austin fix. I recently thought it was Christmas when I found a container in the freezer a couple months after my last visit. I do the same with the sesame noodles and a couple of the other prepared foods. The shopping experience is always pleasant and quaint. The staff are always warm and friendly. Wheatsville is no longer anything special. Compared to other stores where you can get natural and organic foods (Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, Central Market, HEB), they have a smaller selection, higher prices, and worse service. See my review of the other location. Giving them an extra star because they're one of the few places in town, maybe the only place, where you can buy a burrito with whole wheat flour. Not Freebirds, not Cabo Bob's, seemingly not Mr. Natural, not Chipotle, not Amy's or Whole Foods brands in the frozen section. read more

I love this store so much! I know how much I love it because I feel so grumpy when I rarely go to the other big local stores that are bigger and more impersonal. Plus Wheatsville carrie's mostly organic produce. And it is so easy to shop there. Plus the staff knows all about their stock. I can always find out about the best type of apple or other fruit. My wife and I stopped here for their really good variety of Tofurky options they carry and decided to stay for dinner. We saw they offered popcorn tofu and they offered samples. After sampling the buffalo popcorn tofu, we decided that was it and ordered a burrito and po-boy. The gentleman preparing the food was very nice and hooked me up with all the veggies in my burrito. He even offered nutritional yeast, which I added, and I did appreciate them having it as an option. The burrito was amazing, packed with veggies and the tofu was outstanding. I added vegan ranch, salsa, and even some packets of yellowbird hot sauce they had at the hot food bar and crushed that burrito. 10/10 would recommend. read more

During Covid, we are trying to avoid large grocery chains and support more local boutique stores. Wheatsville has been a wonderful neighborhood option for us - we are now co-op members ourselves. It's well organized, seasonal, health-focused foods. They carry the Siete wheat-free taco shells, lychees and many other items that I seek as a gluten-free vegetarian. I became an owner of Wheatsville when I was still in undergrad in 2013. Fast forward 6 years and I came back, this time for good. Knowing that I was going to be here for the long term, I decided to go back and renew my membership....or so I thought. To my pleasant surprise, the $70 I paid 10 years ago allowed me to be an owner for LIFE! And trust me, I've already far surpassed that amount in member savings. I 90% of my groceries at Wheatsville, with the other 10% mainly coming from the Texas Farmers Market or, veryyyyy occasionally, Sprouts (I had to do this the other week when I couldn't find any pecans at my co-op). I loveeeee being able to find so many zero-waste, vegan, gluten-free, sustainable, and local options. Having to exist in capitalism sucks. Shopping at Wheatsville makes it a little better. read more

I shop at Wheatsville in south Austin over other grocery stores in my area because they carry a condensed version of what I want in the way of groceries, supplements, and sundries and I can avoid giant box stores. Also important to me at Wheatsville are the helpful workers who show a kind, tolerant and helpful attitude toward me, and to the nearby houseless people that visit. They have set reasonable boundaries and show respectful regard to everyone it seems. Thanks Wheats. I love you. read more

A few things have changed with Wheatsville's service recently. I'm not changing my stars, but I thought it helpful to write a quick update to my earlier review. Their incredible near-concierge-level curbside service continues, but it is now subject to a 3% upcharge. That in and of itself is unremarkable. It's really a pittance to pay for the incredibly kind and terrific service you receive, including same day pickup for far less than their competitors. But there's a catch to the story. If an item is deleted from your cart for a store-related reason (say, out-of-stock), the charge doesn't correct itself. You get stuck with the charge for what you _intended_ to buy. I pointed this out several times to staff members during the order/pickup process, and they each told me not to worry: it would recalculate automatically when the tab was closed. Well, guess what? That didn't happen. A follow-up text message went unanswered as well. Luckily, I had a subsequent purchase a couple of days later for exactly the same amount, and I was able to get credited for the difference. But I shouldn't have had to work this hard at it. I don't mind the fee, just make it accurately reflect what I actually bought. However, in that same order for a case of energy bars, I was denied the case 10% discount. It was a regularly stocked item, and I received the case discount on a different flavor of the identical item two days prior. I simply asked them to bring in an unopened box because they were out-of-stock on the item. In this case, I was told it was a "basics" item and the discount did not apply. That's odd, because the case discount was clearly labeled on the curbside description of the item online. Almost bait-and-switch if you ask me. Same item was over $3 less at H-E-B; I was only asking them to honor their posted discount and meet me halfway. And that's what's a little troubling lately about my favorite organic foods store. Everyone I've worked with in curbside is attentive, kind, and super-friendly, almost over the top so. At the same time, the member-owners see too much internal disorganization and lack of communication between staff members. For example, if I place and pay for an order online for an item that's out-of-stock, I shouldn't be shuffled between curbside hospitality, front service desk, and back to hospitality when the item arrives. That should be seamless to me--especially when I indicate in writing during the order that I'm willing to wait for the complete order to come in. This situation plus inconsistency in published pricing puts a taint on the otherwise excellent experience of shopping at Wheatsville. It's still Neatsville, just with added speed bumps that can be somewhat jarring at times. read more

I am a big fan of coop shopping. I have been shopping at Wheatsville since they opened on South Lamar. They have a nice assortment of fruits and veggies, healthy bulk items, and of course BUFFALO TOFU (which my kids can't get enough of). Love this little gem! read more

It's a little expensive but the food is terrific. Great selection, good unique produce, and the items they make are amazing. I'd argue the wraps are some of the best in Austin. The desserts and brownies are absolutely amazing as well. It feels more healthy and curated than Whole Foods. My only knock is the salad bar (not enough exciting options and dressings) and the hot bar (items are too greasy/ salty). If they fixed this area with healthier and more exciting options, I'd probably shop for groceries no where else (hint hint). read more

I was a bit astounded at the increased productivity of South Austin, specifically South Lamar (route 343). There seemed to be so much business/activity from when I had biketoured through the area a decade ago. Specifically, a strip mall which features the Wheatsville food co-op, a delightful store filled with healthier foodstuffs, and it accepts all major credit cards--including debit cards with cash back! I was so delighted with my initial purchase of delicious HU Hunks Chocolate (and cash back) that I returned the next day to buy more healthy foods (white cheddar popcorn/flaxseed crackers/cheddar cheese thins/sea salt popcorn/more Hu Hunks chocolate to keep me going while making my return motor. This was one of my favorite places until the girl at front with short short blonde hair was extremely rude to me for no reason. I walked in from the parking lot exhaling the last bit of my vey discreet nicotine vape, literally putting it away as I walked in the store. and she goes out of her way to start screaming at me saying she better not see me smoking it in the store and that I'm not even allowed to smoke in the parking lot here and on and on.. it was completely uncalled for, over the top unfriendly Karen behavior, very embarrassing that she is a manager there... I don't even feel comfortable shopping there anymore. The tone she talked to me in was so mean that if another man had talked to me that way it was practically like she wanted a fight and felt self righteous about it. She was rude for no reason and followed me down every aisle basically profiling me thinking I was gonna steal. Which is absolutely outrageous. Came here to grab some food. Such as a sandwich as the little food counter. It took 28 minutes just to get myself and my wife a sandwich. After ten minutes my wife stayed in line for our sandwiches and I waited outside in line to vote. Insane how long it took just to get our sandwiches. Also, Wheatsville should really think about having the line to vote wrap around to the other side of the building (northeast side?!) instead of having people line up in front of the entrance and other store entrances blocking others from getting in or out. This place has great food products, but I will not be getting any food from the counter anymore. The sandwiches took forever and were not that good no still enjoy Whole Foods better. read more

Absolutely the best grocery store in Austin. I used to go to Whole Foods, but Wheatsville is a million times better than them, & it isn't a corporate sell out! I don't do my regular shopping at wheatsville, because it is a little pricey for my teacher budget. I do, however go to wheatsville for specific products. I am obsessed with their Buffalo Popcorn Tofu and their Vegan Blue Cheese! They have a good coffee selection, that includes whole beans by local roasters. They also have some yummy vegan products :) and yummy vegan sweets in their pastry cabinet. I definitely love their sandwich counter. My favorite sandwich is the Buffalo Popcorn Tofu Hero. I had the most delicious Nigerian soup. I can't tell you what was in it but it could have been squash with an aroma of spices that was delicious. Then I had a toasted banquette with seasoned fried tofu and a some veggies with a sauce. It was delicious! The service was fast, friendly and the outside seating was perfect for a casual lunch. For the price you're paying to shop at Wheatsville, they could really stand to up their service. Their deli is delicious and conveniently located to my job. Love the food! Waiting 15 minutes for them to make a sandwich when there are FIVE employees standing around behind the deli counter shooting the shit (at lunch hour rush) and literally 10 tickets waiting to be fulfilled is absolutely bonkers. There is zero sense of urgency. Are they nice? Sure. Do they make bomb sandwiches? Yes. Do they seem to think that everyone is on their schedule and completely disregard those trying to grab a quick bite on their lunch break? Yep. Actually, I guess all of us angrily standing around eyeing the staff and paying $17 for a sandwich and a bag of chips with poor service makes US bonkers, not them. read more

They overcharge me for groceries almost every visit, and their signature popcorn tofu is just ok. Vegan doughnuts at their bakery section are fantastic though! Seriously wouldn't even bother getting anything else except those doughnuts: salted caramel, chocolate-filled, chocolate glazed...all huge, fluffy, sweet cakes that are sure to satisfy a sweet tooth. I went in to buy a loaf of bread today and was accosted by the manager. I was not wearing a mask as per Gov. Abbott's announcement of ending the mask mandate. What's more I have severe asthma and cannot breathe with a mask. The manager told me to put on a mask and I explained to him that it was no longer a mandate. He informed me that Wheatsville is a private company and would continue to enforce the masks. If I could give less than one star on this review I would. the manager was RUDE and unprofessional. I don't think it's right to treat a 65 yr old customer (myself) with such disdain. I can tell you I will NEVER shop there again. He told me this would be the last time they would let me check out. I have been a member for over 25 years. I used to shop there frequently until pandemic hit. I went there to get food and some things I could only get there. These are things that I noticed that made me sad. 1) the food counter for customers to eat is gone and replaced with stacks of box sparkling water 2) Corner with coffee and drinks now replaced with tshirts and knick knacks. Very unappealing... 3) outdoor eating area looks sad and rundown. Used to be inviting and vibrant. No one was there. 4) No popcorn tofu! I love this place. I'm a frequent customer (sometimes daily) and in addition to the great selection of organic and gluten free foods, the staff really make it. Everyone is so friendly and it's nice to be recognized and connect. They have a decent wine and beer selection, as well as a wonderful hot bar and deli with lots of amazing prepped food (the beet and kale salad is amazing, popcorn tofu should not be missed). They'll also make fresh sandwiches, burritos and bowls. The burrito bowl with popcorn tofu is fantastic, as well as the Italian sandwich. Cannot get enough of the roll it's served on! I remember as a young college student volunteering for Wheatsville over somewhere near 32nd street, at its first location. People complain about 'Boomers, but that was where I remember using "recycled" and "reused" boxes and bags to carry groceries home. Wheatsville was a precursor of that trend. I hadn't been back in a while, but I found the produce and products here to be of high quality. I also bought a fresh sweet potato salad and a zero calorie spritzer recently, and I ate lunch on the patio. Sitting there made me recall the old days, and the collaborative and cooperative community spirit of those times. I think a lot of Austinites miss that spirit. Also, don't underestimate cooperative business models! There is more than one way to run a successful business. #Proof read more

Update: So a few years after first discovering Wheatsville, I now work within walking distance. I am here at least a few times a week. I totally recommend their breakfast tacos and my favorite sandwich is the Buffalo Popcorn Tofu Hero sandwhich. Things I like about Wheatsville: 1. veggies, meat, and dairy items are responsibly sourced. Whenever possible, they try to get veggies and fruits from local farms. You never have to worry or feel guilty about where your food is coming from. 2. Wheatsville works to donate directly to local non-profits that serve our community. Round up at the cash register to help out! 3. If you become an owner for a one-time fee, you can save more $ with specials for owners, help elect the Wheatsville board, and vote for the non-profits you would like to see supported. 4. Dear Wheatsville, I really wish the Deli "hot bar" had better food. It's just awful, and it's been pretty awful for YEARS. The main ingredient in most of the recipes is garlic, overwhelming garlic. Why? RECIPES, Wheatsville -- you can get Good Recipes (put together by people who are Good Cooks), and then pay people to FOLLOW the recipes. What ever happened to the chicken thighs with Stubbs BBQ sauce? Those were good, every time. The sneeze guards are also a joke. It's almost impossible to contort your body enough to reach the things in back. I also wish you would sweep the bulk area and the produce department, and wash the bunches of carrots, which are usually really dirty, like they were just pulled out of the ground. This place is terrific. Many great options for refrigerated to-go meals, much MUCH better than what's offered in a similar section at Whole Foods. The food tastes great, doesn't seem like it's been sitting there since the dark ages. The fried tofu is to die for (BBQ, BUFFALO, REG), all delicious. My favorite, the fried tofu po' boy, OH BOY whew, whatever dipping sauce that it comes with is absolute heaven. They have a very affordable pricing and I'm obsessed with their vegan donuts and other snacks and appetizers/deli section items. It feels weird to give a review to a grocery store but I do believe they're strongly looked over and aren't appreciated to their full potential! I love this Wheatsville. It's always clean, fully stocked, a WIDE variety of products and during the pandemic they have been extremely helpful. I also appreciate how they protect their employees and put up large barriers at the register. It shows a lot about the company. While it may not be as convenient as HEB shopping, I use them for all my fruits/veggies and meats. Now they have curb side with a 3% fee which is sooo minimal compared to what other companies charge. I trust the sourcing of their meats and their large variety of produce. read more

Killed time at Target nearby and rolled in at 3:40pm to find out they hadn't even started making my food. What's the point of online ordering if you're not going to check it? Everything is made with care. Staff is knowledgeable with a South Austin flare. Coldest Coconut water in town.
