As a matter of fact, my son was the last client Omar would see until the shop will reopen in April. Unfortunately this shop just had their grand opening last month. But back to the visit itself.. I called ahead and was informed they were open until 7 and what a relief too. To ask my 13 year old to go weeks without a haircut, is just asking waaayyyy too much out of him. We walked in and were immediately greeted by several people. We signed in and Omar had my son sit in his chair right away. Omar paid very close attention to what my son asked for and didn't pressure him into what he thought was cool. So first of all, Omar has some serious talent. It has been a good while since my son has received that good of haircut. It was clean and Omar took his time. He is very down to earth and just a cool guy to talk to. I will be taking my son back to Omar from now on. I did not have the opportunity to talk with the other gentleman in there. I'm sure though they will do give just as great of a cut as my son received. If you're looking for a barber on the far west side, this is it.

Coming from the D.C./Baltimore area, I have short hair, and I know how hard it can be to find someone who can really give you the cut you're looking for. I'm still fairly new to San Antonio, and I'm not going to lie--it has been a challenge finding someone who can do my hair the way I like it. So, I took a chance and Googled African American barbershops in the area and came across D-NYce Cutz. It was about 30-some minutes from my home, but I said, "Let me give them a try." I called the shop, and D, the owner, answered. I explained exactly what I was looking for and asked if she had someone in the shop who could work with my short hair. She recommended Susan and told me to give her a call and explain what I wanted. I did just that and made an appointment for the next morning at 11:00. Let me tell you--SUSAN DID NOT DISAPPOINT! She did an excellent job, and I am VERY pleased with my cut! She listened to what I wanted, and I walked out of there one very satisfied customer. I will absolutely be going back! One thing I do want to mention: when I Googled the shop, an old address came up, which threw me off a little. However, the phone number was correct. I called Susan, and she gave me the correct address, so if you're using Google and see an older address, just call them--you'll get the right location. Not a show where they change clippers 6 times, where they are blasting hip hop, bright lights, asking if the can post your cut on social media, stopping to return texts or calls, and charging $50 plus before the tip. I don't need a "lineup", I don't need a beer. I've walked out of a couple places mid cut. They just cut hair here. Still shave with warm cream and a single blade. Old school! Nice conversations about current events. No nonsense. ALOT of veterans and current military get haircuts here. No appointments, just walk ins. Why not a 5...well. They are all cash. No other form of payment. I love my barber. He is getting up in age. I notice sometimes the cuts I get aren't as consistent. I will still keep coming back until I feel it's bad. I don't know who will cut my hair when then time comes.

Albert does the best fade, ever. I've been going to him since before he opened this shop, at least 15 years. I've graduated h.s., finished a B.A, received a M.A., joined the military, left the military, moved away for a PhD program, moved back to write my dissertation, and Albert has been there every step of the way. It's a no frills shop. You wont find chicks with revealing clothing messing up your hair because they never learned how to properly fade at whatever flunky beauty school they attended. This is a barber shop and they keep it simple. You'll typically find the one and only T.V. on some sort of afternoon courtroom show or morning television show (they really like Kelly & Michael). They have the usual outdated magazines to occupy your time while you wait. Albert and the other dudes have their regular customers. We will wait for our barber even if some dude brings in his three children ahead of you. That's just how it is. The thing I like most about this place is I don't even tell him how to cut my hair anymore, he just does it. That's pretty cool. Now, if I could just get my favorite bartender/bar to remember me like that I'll have lived a complete life. So if you have long flowing hair that requires a lot of maintenance and specialty products from a beauty salon, I don't know what Albert and his crew can do for you. I mean, they're talented and I'm sure they can hook you up, but they seem more old school to me. If you're in the military and need a medium reg, Westwood Village is your spot. Bonus: Albert will trim the eyebrow hairs that grow all wacky when you get older. Indeed, the first time he did that I was like, WTF, I'm an old man now because I have crazy, uncontrollable hair growing randomly. Protip: Go early on the weekday if you can as it tends to get busy on the weekend and in the afternoon. They're closed on Sunday/Monday. And bring cash, no credit cards.
