Love this place. Interesting, unique brands, and a variety of libations to wet your whistle. Service is a lil "meh" ... no one seems to take much initiative to help you find anything nor checkout once you do. Really disappointing tonight at the Whip In. I think it was an off night? First off, the draught board which is usually full up to 70+ was very scarce, so not sure what was going on there. We ordered the chicken vindaloo and chicken shawarma. I was confused when our food came out for 2 reasons: 1) I wasn't expecting a wrap and fries for the shawarma- just was expecting rice since the menu didn't describe it as a wrap, but whatever - my bad 2) it came in takeout containers with only one set of silverware (plastic) I went back inside to ask for another set and also asked if why (out of curiosity) the presentation had changed to takeout containers. I was told "it's a covid thing". I tried to explain nicely that I understood - but have only been in Austin since covid and have come every week or so since January, always with plates etc. She repeated, seeming annoyed with the question, that it was a covid thing, shoved me two mini plates and some silverware and walked away. Ok, cool! I'm only giving a 3 because I have been here 6-7 times, always with a great experience. Tonight was a 1 star for service, but honestly food was below par as well. To start, I adore indian food. It is such a cute place but the food was below average. To start we came on a tuesday, early afternoon. There was maybe 6 other patrons in there. They had r&b jams blaring, to be expected for a hipster hideout, I guess. The gentleman that took our order said that he could not make a korma with paneer even though that option was available on the menu. I ordered saag paneer instead. It took almost an hour to get the food. The samosas were great. The basmati rice was very dry. The paneer was so dry and almost inedible, The naan was toasted to the point that it was unenjoyable to dip and bite into. I would not recommend and it was quite overrated. read more

The only reason why this place is still open is because of liquor distribution from the store next door. I happened to be staying at an Airbnb right next store to this lively spot and ending up spending several evenings by getting some drinks here. So this place is a bar/Indian fusion restaurant/market/liquor store. It's amazing. You can come in and grab a drink or try some Indian style nachos. They also sell beer and wine if you want to have a chill night at home. Also they have a small deli type section where you can get sandwiches and bottled drinks like Kombucha. What's not to love sbout a convenience store/taproom/indian restsurant/package store? Efficient & friendly service. Indoor & outdoor seating. Nice, clean restrooms (a very pleasant surprise). Easy parking. Convenient location. It has everything. The food is genuinely good whether you're getting standard bar fare or the tasty Indian specialties. We hope to return when a band plays on stage, but we had the best relaxed lunch on the covered patio on our way out of town. Who knew you could find a little calm oasis so close to the interstate? This might be one of the hardest reviews I've ever made. I have come to the Whip In for years (I still remember playing a show here when I was a kid in my father's band and having one of best and most interesting Indian fusion chicken fried steaks of my life) and always appreciated (and still do) what they're doing. But the prices are just getting too damn high. As of the past week, every single beer on tap has risen by a price of roughly $3 on average; essentially the base price for any beer on tap STARTS at $8, and without a doubt that's the highest I've seen at any establisbment in Austin, and I have been to an uncountable number. I also had their $12.99 Kurma (also known as Korma in some resturaunts) and it was good, but more like a $8.99 Korma at Tejis as fas as quantity and depth of flavor goes. Make no mistake, this is an indesputed historic establishment that's likely also struggling with COVID and I'll still support it, but seeing these changes is just disheartening and it's getting harder and harder for me to justify still stopping in on the weekend. read more

Brunch is good but WOW home fries and bacon are Waaaay top salty. And they are always out of the grits by the time I arrive. Maybe once try and make more ... Just once. 3* for efficiency. It seems to improve and then they make another change and it dips again I know that change is difficult and agree that the venue itself has improved immensely overall That's why I keep coming back Will never understand WHY there are no Servers and why they choose the order at the counter option forcing patrons to stand and wait in line. This place was not at all what I expected. The name and location along the ribs of I-35 conjure an image of a convenience store, with maybe a gas pump or two outside. Well, it does have the convenience store aspect, with walls of refrigerated cases along the back. But the front section has a wine bar, a restaurant with beer on tap, booths and tables, and a stage, where bands play several nights a week. That's what brought me here. The wall calendar says they have regular activities like Trivia Night, so you may get a different experience here on different days or nights. The menu is unexpected, as well. It's mainly Indian food. The garlic Naan bread comes buttered with fresh basil, and I could eat a basket by myself if I weren't trying to be polite and share. The French fries were greasy and over cooked, however, so I don't recommend those. We were there late night, so we didn't have the bandwidth to try anything else on our first visit. Nice hangout place at night and good and quick lunchbreak place during the weekday. The beer is poured right when you order it so you can sip on your needed work break alcohol as you wait on your lunch. Not a first choice in food but hanging out and having indian flavors with beer is nice and unique. Live music is done once in awhile per their schedule. I've had Brunch, Lunch and Dinner here. Foodwise, it is NOT authentic Indian food. The flavors are lighter and less spicy. I always have to resort to their spicy Habenaro sauces on the side to satisfy that craving. I have since gone vegetarian but the Barton Springs sandwich has a good combination of flavors, textures, and is my number 1 recommendation. I now get Travis Heights which is essentially the same but with samosa stuffing. The Vegetable Samosas has gone through a revamp and now are one of the best I've tried - my next recommendation even if you're not vegetarian. Crispy flacky outside as opposed to a thick wrapping. Lamb Samosas (saw coworker eat) done within puff pastry. Am a regular will continue to be a regular. Relaxing place, very zen. Nice courteous staff. read more

I ordered a to-go meal tonight via Postmates, and when I went to pick it up, I was met with extremely rude and disrespectful behavior by one of the bartenders. Upon arrival, I asked where I needed to pick up my food, and I was pointed to a shelf. The bag had my first and middle initial, but not my last name and was labeled UberEats. I asked them to find my order. With some back and forth, it was determined that my order had been mislabeled. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. As I'm trying to sort this out with a female bartender and a cook, the other bartender, a tall burly man with a beard, a Marlboro hat and a camouflage shirt rudely shoved the bag of food at me, cutting me off, and said, "this is yours" and turned around and walked off. I supported this business at the beginning of COVID by shopping in their makeshift grocery store, and even buying t-shirts. I only recently acquired a taste for Indian food, so I was excited to try it tonight. I will never be back. I was also told they don't have a manager around, nobody is in charge, and as I searched online for a way to contact anybody running this place, I came up empty. read more

They also have a nice little courtyard on the side which looks fairly pleasant. We arrived 8 minutes before the kitchen closed and 1 hour before the bar itself closed. They happily took our ordered and brought out fresh, hot, delicious food despite the looming closing time. The person behind the counter that took our order was kind and helpful and answered all of our questions about the menu, even making suggestions. This is a combination of bar/Indian restaurant/convenience store. We walked in and walked straight ahead to the counter to place the food and drink order. They give you a number and will bring your food to the table. Sit anywhere, there are cozy booths by the window and family/picnic style seating in the middle, or sit at the bar. The calendar on the wall shows that they do trivia nights and other open mic stuff. Behind the counter is a regular convenience store, we didn't head back there but from what I could see there were other alcohol options and snacks. My husband had the chicken vindaloo and I had the lamb biryani with raita. Both were huge portions of deliciousness. We'll definitely be back to try some of their Mexican/Indian fusion items. There is some parking in the front but not sure if there is anything additional around the corner. It seems like a place that gets packed easily.
