Nuances, complexity, savory, tangy and the fattiness to the rice makes this a great biryani. Lamb curry--meat is tender, but a little stringy. The sauce is very rich, but one dimensional--savory lamb flavor overpowers everything else. The meat and sauce mixes well with the rice. Rice provides a little complexity along with the cilantro. Usually this is like the goto regular, but it has really gone downhill. The parking has always been a nightmare but usually worth the hassle because the food and beer was on point. Tonight was very different. The beer wasn't all that cold. It's never fun getting a rodeo cold beer in a bar. I ordered the special, chana dal, and it just wasn't that great. It was very bland and dry. Usually the food is pretty tasty. It's never been a grand cuisine, but it at least tastes good. This was not even very pleasant. The bartenders were not very friendly either and even sitting at the bar it took forever to get any service. Once we were served, it was far less than service with a smile. I'm definitely gonna think twice the next time I consider going back to Whip In. It may be time to find a new regular after work beer and meal location. read more

Constant staff turnover, and the menu and beer selection has shrunk to basically half of what it was. The food in particular is a shadow of what it used to be. Tonight, after finding out they didn't have any of the specials on the board, we ordered chips and queso and after bringing us one order, they brought us a second mistakenly? Both had stale chips and the queso was burnt. I asked for no cilantro in my dish due to an allergy and it was absolutely lousy with it. I came back after likeeeee 6 years? So I figure a new review is in order. We went for brunch on New Year's Day. Ordered a variety of things: elegant stoner snack (what a name I'm so in love), queso, zucchini cakes, migas. The food was love it or hate it. I looooved the stoner snack - basically fries with yummy stuff on them - and the queso. The zucchini cakes were almost inedible and came out super late. I think they were rushed and didn't cook them enough. I also had a delicious Wunder Pilz Kombucha that was on tap, tart cherry. AND a gluten free tres leches cake. Yummmmmmmm. I highly recommend looking around at the grocery. Lots of cool beer and wine to choose from. The entire experience was good in the end, I'm giving them 4 stars with the idea that some of the food stuff was a fluke. It is not everyplace in Austin that allows one to wash a goat burger and samosas down with craft Oktoberfest from local Texas breweries, all served to you by hipsters in lederhosen, before grabbing a six pack to go off the shelf of the convenience store in which this is all taking place. Whip in is sort of a carnival packed into an odd, ramshackle old store by the side of the I-35 South access road, with chaotic counter service and mismatched furniture and outdoor picnic tables and Indian food and bands. It's as if they're trying four different businesses simultaneously and get them all to sort of work. Expecting a traditional sit down dinner (service is mainly counter-and-food-runner) here would be a mistake, as would expecting a traditional night out at the pub. It's Whip In, which means that it's all and none of these things, a quirky outlier in a town in which everyone claims to be a quirky outlier. Prices are reasonable, parking is okay, and it's on major north-south buslines. I dig Whip In and enjoy both the menu and the beer selection, but could imagine it not being to everyone's taste. read more

I love this place. From the outside you would have no idea how great this place really... dare I even call it COOL?! The beer selection for purchase might be my favorite in town that I have found so far. They carry my two favorite breweries which aren't found many places and then have a multitude of beers on tap, too! I love the tarot card feel at each of the booths and then the perfect little patio outside. Dog friendly, live music when the world is allowed to sing again, and Indian food? Our first visit to Whip In was generally a pleasant experience. Servers are friendly and the wait time for our food was reasonable. We ordered the lamb biryani and Dhaba wrap. The wrap seemed like it was Chinese sweet and sour chicken with stir fry veggies put into a tortilla...and while it tasted good (to me, my wife was a little less positive about it) it was a strange combination of flavors under what I think is supposed to be an Indian dish name. The lamb biryani was pretty good and had a nice level of spiciness; some of the lamb chunks, however, were a little dry and over cooked--if they hadn't been the dish as a whole would have been nice. We will definitely return to try other dishes on the menu. Whip In has a relaxed and informal atmosphere and friendly staff. This is not your typical liquor store. I was floored by the extraordinary selection of booze. You won't find your usual supermarket beers and wines here. From Malbecs, Dolcettos, Bourdeaux, Rieslings, with prices ranging from $10-$30, that is really a good bargain. I opted for bubbly, since I don't really know what kind of wine drinker my hostess is, a $15 French bubbly makes for a great gift in exchange for letting me crash at her place. My friend was directed to the beer aisle by a helpful Indian man and purchased the "best pumpkin ale" ever. (I think the brand was named Schlafly) There's an Indian restaurant inside Whip In if you're curious to try it. The bathrooms are clean. Four stars! read more

Over the years, I've driven by/heard about Whip In. It's amazing Indian food! Try the queso! Great beer selection! So when my friend and I were on the hunt for Indian food, we drove the 10 mi down to Whip In to take advantage of an Austin staple. Only I wasn't that impressed. Once inside, it was pretty cramped and the menus are written above the bar/check out area. They're relatively difficult to read while standing in a really long line. Once you order (might as well get a bottle of wine), then you head outside or inside, if room, to grab a table with your number. The servers bring things out as they're ready and ours was a very grumpy dude. I dont know if it's standard practice but when we asked about silverware, he replied "It's inside." So we got up and got silverware. And got up and got water. And got up and got napkins. So, note to readers: You dont have a server as much as a food runner. And then the food really wasn't that great. We tried the chutney queso (blah, really mediocre chips), something with chick peas, a cucumber and tomato salad, the hummus and samosas. Our fave was the salad because of it's crispy, refreshing flavor but the other things were only okay. The chickpeas had very little flavor and the hummus tasted like the one I can buy in a vat at costco. I appreciate the attempt at Texas fusion but I would have appreciated more the creamy/spicy/heartiness of real Indian flavors. It's not inexpensive and while they DO have a great beer selection, that just wasn't enough for me to feel like my drive to get there, my time spent there and the ensuing disappointing food was worth it. As we were leaving, a super raucous band was starting up in the main dining area which appeared to make it extremely difficult to hear your dining partner. In early January Whip In remodeled. The results? Less groceries and more seating! Don't worry you still can find some snacks like Pirate Booty, Austin Nuts and wasabi peas to compliment your beer. The food menu changes often and can be found sketched out on chalk boards above the bar. Based on the quality and taste, it is apparent they take pride in their food. I have had both the Woodland panini and Brenda's eggs. The panini had moist pulled pork, feta cheese and chutney with hints of curry perfectly tucked into the bread. It was extremely flavorful. The Brenda's eggs are green scrambled eggs topped with feta cheese and come with sides of rice and black beans. The pricing on the wine is simple, all are $6 except the ports. More importantly, the Whip In is what every beer nerd dreams of! A large selection of craft beers can be found on tap and in the cooler sold to go. They have happy hour daily from 3pm-7pm knocking a $1 off pints and wine. A couple months ago I went to Pecan Street Brewing in Johnson City as the owner of Whip In was leaving. Similar to a David Lynch film, my 2-hour excursion at the Whip In was stranger than strange. I found myself transitioning between intrigue, irritation, confusion and fascination, and at times, contemplated pulling the plug. Oh how I'd love to watch a typical evening at the Whip In unfold from Lynch's vantage point behind the camera! It's just that cool and clever... and that weird. But what else would you expect from a former gas station-turned-package store that also doubles as a craft beer bar serving up Indian-inspired fare with a wildly creative bent? Thought so. By now, I'd guess most of Austin's beer appreciation society is onto the Whip In. On a recent Friday around 6pm, I received what someone thought was a subtle middle finger for nabbing the last available parking spot, and then felt the burn of an especially scowl-y side eye for jumping on the last bar stool. But that's okay, because my hand was soon greeted with a pint of Boulevard's Tank 7... on draft! From Brouwerij Bosteels to Brasserie St. Feuillien, some of the most celebrated Belgian beers (usually 16 total) live here in addition to the best and brightest locally-brewed picks. Besides sampling to my Belgian-lovin' heart's content, I satiated my growingly insistent hunger pangs with a 'panaani' - the Onion Creek sandwich is filled with Vital Farm's organic roasted chicken salad and dressed in ginger-curried mayo with peppers, lettuce, scallions, and cilantro on warm naan. Well done, friends! By the time 8pm rolled around, I had won a bet on how to properly pronounce Hoegaarden (it's hoo-gar-duhn; the bartender verified), identified the source of a foul odor (a neighboring patron's feet!), purchased non-winning lottery tickets with strangers, talked shop with a journalist, was asked out on a date by a Prince Harry doppelgänger and helped a dude curate a DIY to-go sixer. An Austin legend, pure and simple. I stopped in this evening for a free jazz show (Djamberry Caravan), a $7 panini (their "Silly Cheesesteak") and two reasonably-priced specialty beers unavailable, probably, anywhere else in South Austin. Such a fun place; such good people. It has morphed into a restaurant scene somewhat, and there doesn't seem to be as much of a selection of convenience store staples as there once was. But that's fine. My only real complaint would be that I (and people around me) kept ordering things that were on the menu boards that they were out of. A small adjustment to the chalk boards isn't too much to ask, is it guys? Also, I'm not sure why Dipak wants to scare off at least half of his potential customers with all the political paraphernalia, but it's his store and I can't fault him for using it to promote his opinions. All told, a fun place to shop, eat and listen to live music. If you can only experience one thing in Austin as you drive through, Whip In (as it's right there on the interstate) might be it. read more

Well I have lived in Austin for over twenty years and always thought this was just a convenience store that sold alcohol. Boy was I surprised to know it also was an Indian restaurant. Small space, but a fairly good amount of seating. I wasn't too crazy about the menu offerings. They vary daily & definitely are not the traditional Indian offerings that you would expect. Whip in has tailored their menu more as an American-Indian mixed menu with items such as nachos. I tried the chicken curry that they did have on special for the day and just thought it was ok. The extra habanero sauce I asked for on the side definitely helped enhance the dish. The naan however was a huge disappointment. It was gummy and not cooked all the way. I've visited scores of times and each time it's morphed into something less desirable. So the now... Be prepared for tatted hipsters, loud rock 'n roll (that, I approve of), an expensive "by the glass" wine menu, and a menu that mostly delivers, but not always. ( For a $10 cork fee you can buy a bottle off the retail rack and they're generally well selected and priced fairly ) The trick here is to appear unassuming, and find one great staff member, to act as your shepherd. Otherwise you'll wait impatiently as staff zips around, tacitly pretending you're not there. Or worse still, while they sit at the wine bar, seemingly off duty (and tacitly pretending you're not there) It's difficult to ascertain who's running this place, and why snotty, lazy staff remain. I used to drive by this place all the time and not give it a thought. Then one day, my friend Tony called us and said, "Go down to the Whip In. They just received a large shipment of Kenyan Tusker 16 oz. beer that they must sell off right away. $1.50 a bottle if you buy 6 or more." It turned out, something along the lines of "must be 18 years or older to consume" was printed on the Tusker bottle label. Well, that's true for the rest of the world. But in America, it's a big no-no, and I guess the ATF Bureau allowed the Whip In to sell the Tusker, as long as they got rid of it quickly and cheaply. So, about once a week, we'd go down to the Whip In and get half a dozen Tuskers. During that month that we regularly stocked Tusker in our fridge at home, we'd watch films like "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "Out of Africa." We felt very Hemingway. We longed to wear pith helmets. Then, the Whip In ran out of Tusker forever. It was a sad day. But whenever I'm driving by (and I happen to be on the correct side of the feeder road), I'll still stop by and pick up some beer because their selection is quite amazing. The ceiling of booths is covered with Indian sarees giving whip In the Indian Dhaba ambience. Loved it!The tables were spacious and there is an indoor stage for live music/shows. Whip in has a huge covered patio out front with plenty of seating(backless benches), decent parking and a great staff. The only downside is- it is an order at the counter place causing the crowd to wait in line. The tailored menu of whip In has Tex-Mex/Indian mixed items like samosas, nachos, hummus etc. The food menu changes, it can be found sketched out on chalkboards above the bar. They had a pretty decent selection of vegetarian options.  We ordered Thali plate and Channa Masala Dhaba bowl. Naan was dense,covered with butter/ghee. Hummus was tasty and veggies were fresh. Dhaba bowl is served with basmati rice and a side of coleslaw. Chana masala had rich flavours, not overly spicy. It goes well with rice or naan. Coleslaw was crunchy, tangy and mildly sweet.   The pricing is average, a large selection of craft beer can be found on tap and the enormous selection of beers and wines to go. Yesterday (6/1/2012) was the first time I went into Whip It. First of all people going, there is parking in the front, street and a small lot in the back. I was expecting the typical bar, lots of beer and liquor, young people, loud music but I was pleasantly surprised. It was well lit but a dimmed lighting atmosphere,the music was audible but not overwhelming where you have to yell at the person next to you, there are tables, booths, large picnic style tables, and bar seating. The gentleman that was helping my friend and I with beer selections was very patient as I have not had the chance to try any other domestic beers besides the large named ones you can easily find at HEB. So I tried delicious amber's all night; Austin Amber and Goathead are the way to go if you're looking for something smooth to coast on. Unfortunately I cannot comment on the food since I didn't order anything but the plates that were coming out looked pretty good to me. I'll be going back in the future read more

Yes, "old Austin" still exists and it sometimes is populated with jumpsuit wearing Elvises. We stopped in on Elvis' birthday and, although we passed on the Fat Elvis Burger, we did enjoy the Goat Sliders, spicy fries and a curry that were washed down by multiple 512 Pecan Porters and unsweetened teas (guess who didn't have the tea?). The craft beer selection nearly put a tear to my eye and finally tempted me to stray away from Pecan Porter to a very tasty and smoky milk stout. The goat sliders were amazing, the spicy fries at least as delicious if not more so. I was not able to taste the aromatic curry that briefly graced the other side of the table, but the good news is that I only suffered light contusions from my unsuccessful attempts to do so. The ambiance is what makes the Whip In a mandatory stop on your Austin Bucket List. The tiny corner where the slightly medicated, slightly (okay, more than slightly) aged rockers are getting their Grateful Dead on. The other side of the room, where the Elvises are pouring goodness to thirsty patrons sitting in front a beautiful wood bar. In between, tables and hard booths are filled with a fun, and accurate cross-section of Austin humanity: kids, parents, students, LGBTers, over the hill hippies, from the valley Bros, posers, real-deals. In summary, the Whip In is a microcosm of all that is awesome about Austin and one of the main reasons it is. read more

Honestly? The reviews don't lie. I mean, 1,288 people can't be wrong....right? This was our last stop on our bar hopping adventure and I have to say, this place was not at ALL what I expected. After entering the joint, I was severely disappointed that I have lived in the ATX just over 2 years and have not stepped foot into this place until last weekend. They have an entire beer / wine bar that sort of stretches into an L shape. There are rows of wine for sale and beer coolers lining the walls around the whole place. The vibe in the place was outta sight! We ordered a couple of night caps and as we sauntered out on the patio dancing away (they had an incredible band playing inside....), we sat down at a picnic table. We bellied up and talked with a local neighborhood gentleman for an almost solid 2 hours - laughing, exchanging political banter and telling some well-worth-it-nonsensical stories. The patio out back it phenomenal. The tables are surrounded by their own beds of lettuce and kale. Tres cool in my book. The gentleman we were chatting it up with had a sandwich that looked as gourmet as anything I have ever seen...without the gourmet prices. I CANNOT wait to go back here to try some food and some of the other great beers and wines they had stocked up. I'd give this place 6 stars....but it won't let me. read more

If a dive bar served Indian food. That's basically what you're in for. I have to say I liked their awkward indoor seating arrangements before they set up a functional stage for performing artists. Don't get me wrong, they usually kick out the jam, but if there's someone on stage I feel like I have to pay attention to who's playing vs my food or eating companion. So speaking of eating. The food is pretty great. Expensive, but good. Though, the portions will leave you full but not necessarily stuffed, so that's good. However! Occasionally you'll catch a staff member who's got a bad 'tude and that don't fly. I'm sorry, but not all people coming into your store are familiar with A) your menu B) Indian cuisine. If people have questions, you should be a little less poopy and/or smug about answering them. That isn't to say there are some nice people there too. So props to them! read more

Would have been a 5 if the service was better. The food was absolutely on point, no questions asked. Everyone was basically licking their plate at the end. Service - When I went to order my meal, the host at the front was very abrupt and they seemed to be out of everything I asked for on the menu. I ended up getting the migas - I'm not supposed to eat yolk, and they can't do egg whites - so I was going to change my order to just get the quinoa grits which they were out of. There was nothing else on the brunch menu that I could get without eating the yolk so I caved for this meal and it was obviously worth it. My other friend had to wait 20 minutes before anything came out, so we were all pretty much finished with our meals before he even received his - he ordered the special for that. Vibe - The atmosphere of the bar/restaurant is cool and unique to Austin. It's one of the best places in this area of Austin and I would come again for sure. I just have to suck up a little poor service for a well worth it meal. Food - The migas were amazing. Four of us ordered them, and everything about the flavor was spot on. I think this place could be a lot better than it is. The wines on the menu were actually quite delicious (especially the Cab Sav from Washington), but the service was pretty bad. I sat with a friend at the bar for about 1.5-2 hours and my glass was empty a few times for more than 20 minutes without the bartender paying attention to ask me what I wanted. It wasn't even busy. Also toward the end of the night we were demanded to move down the bar because they were setting up some sort of event. I didn't mind moving of course, but the way we were told was straight-up rude. My husband and I made the trip to the Whip In in south Austin. A place I have been wanting to eat at for years. We live super far north and just didn't want to drive down there for lunch. But today was the day and it did not disappoint, in fact, I text four of my friends while eating our appetizer to tell them they had to come eat here!!! The atmosphere is everything I wanted it to be and more. Quirky south Austin vibe and super relaxed patio or indoor seating . The staff was nice and very helpful with making suggestions. However, I don't know how you could choose a beverage because there are so many options.The beer and wine selection is out of this world amazing! We had the vegan samosas, the woodland burger, and the chicken lunch special with garlic naan. It was a bit pricey ($46+ tip) for lunch that didn't include alcohol but totally worth it. We even said we would make the drive for lunch or dinner soon. Definitely a place I would love to come back to for a date night with friends. read more

I was torn between 2 stars and 3. I had a nice experience here due to excellent company and I do like the actual physical inside of the Whip In, but some of the bartenders were downright rude and while the food was good, it was way too expensive. $10 for a couple pieces of naan chips and a small side of hummus is just ridiculous, even if the four spears of carrots on top were tasty. If they can hire a few friendlier bartenders and work on the food prices, I'd love this place. read more

They have a really great selection of wine and beer as well as both on tap. I got the Chicken 65 which was really delicious. Will definitely be back. read more
