I visited Whirlwind Coffee Company in Oak Park for the very first time today. We stopped by on our way to the Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio. What stood up for me the most was the beautiful outdoor seating area. I ordered an iced coffee with oat milk and it was delicious. The coffee and ambiance are excellent, and it's a great place to relax or catch up with friends. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't a baby changing table in the restroom. For a business that's welcoming to families, having a changing station would make a big difference. I hope they consider adding one in the future. read more

Some days call for a treat. I decided to stop by Whirlwind after hearing they donate 100% of their profits to charity. I was struck by how busy this coffee shop was mid morning, clearly no matter what time of morning it is, Whirlwind is the place to be. Many folks were catching up and working remotely in their bright and cozy cafe. Allow for about 10 -15 minutes between parking and waiting in line. Despite the rush service was great, and I was excited to try their seasonal blackberry drink, The Bear Hug. Stopped in for a quick bite after the doc. Very cool inside. They were about to start roasting some beans right there in front of you but I decided to sit outback to enjoy the croissant. Ultimately went with the ham and cheese croissant and a cold brew. Very quick service too. By the time I ordered everything was ready so I went out back. Cold brew is a nitro so it was light and strong at first then got bitter as it sat. Ham and cheese was stellar. Very flaky pastry on the outside and cheesy with enough ham inside. I have always heard great things about Whirlwind, and let me say, this place did not disappoint. Quick warning- there are two doors, one of which is locked, the other which is open for customers. So, if you are struggling with a door that doesn't open, just go to the other door so you can avoid the humbling embarrassment I faced. It is quite quaint inside! There is a medium sized sitting area once inside (maybe 5 tables and counter facing the window), and the other section is a big area where I am guessing they roast the beans. The code of the wifi is noburntbeans, which makes sense because they very amazingly do not burn the beans!! (Looking at you Starbucks). I got a chai latte with a shot of espresso which was delicious and helped me stay productive as I got to work. It was very welcoming environment, the employees are lovely, and I stayed for over an hour. Also, 100% of profits go to charity! Wow! All in all, a great coffee shop. Great place, however I have one complaint that I have been experiencing the last 4-5 visits over the past 2-3 months. Lately, all my drip coffees that I have ordered have been really bitter. I normally order at least 3-4 coffees per visit and all are different, so I can't blame one specific coffee for the bitterness. It's annoying because the biterness overpowers the specific flavors/notes in each coffee. It was never this way prior to 3 months ago. A few times we just threw the coffee away. The flavor and temperature were perfect. Also got an americano that had a caramel finish. The pastries are a must have and not sure how someone could walk past without drooling. Decent pastries but drinks not well mixed. Flies everywhere inside. Chairs uncomfortable. Heavy metal door to patio broken, slamming constantly. Limited electrical outlets for laptops. Wi-Fi alerts, messages that it is NOT secure! Receipts to cell phones alerts are also NOT secure! Only one trash bin under back counter, doesn't open fully. Awful Indy music, annoying off-key singers. Just not at all conducive for working, studying or reading. Often notice Baristas would rather talk with each other, and make customers wait - and can be fairly cold, even nasty. Shop has no real vibe or personality. Zero greetings of all my visits last few months. Probably a dozen visits - but today's visit was such a turn-off. read more

Dark & well caffeinated They are a roaster as well. I ordered an iced latte. It was okay, but not my fave. I think I would prefer their roast hot. It was a bit too acidic and salty for my taste as an iced drink. It didn't stop me from finishing it though. I will be back to try it warm. A nice smoky or spicy flavored cortado or latte next time. What a little gem. This is my new coffee spot. The staff was very friendly and the place was cozy. I typically get together with a friend at least once a month to catch up and we love to try different coffee places. There are about a million little places in Oak Park. I guess this is what took us so long to find this place....and 100% profit goes to charity. I wanted to try their coffee but wanted the latte too. They allowed me to taste the Sumatra and it was really the best coffee I've tried in a long time; maybe ever. I purchased a 12oz bag (whole beans) and have been grinding it every morning and using my French press...It's really good! I also ordered a large Honey & lavender oat milk latte and a herb goat cheese croissant (I actually ate it so fast, I can't remember what was included with the goat cheese, Will have to update later when I confirm) It was delicious!! I try to make it in here at least once a week and it is the highlight of my week. Everyone is so nice and they all make a great cup of coffee. The best coffee in the Oak Park & surrounding area. I hate not giving this cafe 5 stars. I love the location, the store, and the gatherings they have. My one not so great experience is one barista behind the counter. All the other baristas and staff are personable and great customer service skills. The one that is not (black hair with blonde/bleached hair in front/top) I encountered again today and had the same experience I have had with him before. He speaks just a little too low for me to understand him and every time the door open and closes I definitely can't hear him. He gets annoyed with me and I get annoyed with him being annoyed. lol. But n top of it he tends to do the bare minim on the personable side. He makes it clear with nonverbal cues he doesn't want me to tell him have a good day or to say anything more than what coffee I want. read more

My new favorite Oak Park coffee shop!!! Conveniently located just west of Ridgeland on Madison Avenue, this coffee shop and roaster is much larger that it initially appears. There is a nice big fenced-in outdoor space with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I got a cold Izzy soda. My date got an Americano, and we shared a blueberry scone and a piece of cinnamon Bundt cake. Compostable plates and forks appreciated. Staff was super friendly and efficient. Great service and I really enjoyed the icy coffee it's the first time I got something frozen that didn't taste watered down or overly sweet. There were definitely some things on the menu I never heard of but the people are the counter especially the woman was so nice and explained anything I was curious about. People were doing work and they looked to have nice street seating out front and a back area as well. Great find after playing with goats nearby at GlennArt Farm which is only a mile or so away. Parking was also easy and 2 hours for free--can't beat that! read more

I used to think I didn't like dark roast because Starbucks' always tastes so burnt. But to my surprise, the dark roasts at Whirlwind are smooth and I can't get enough. Recently moved to a different residence and live within easy walking distance of Whirlwind, so I go there a lot. Coffee drink options are plentiful and excellent. They are always just the right temperature for me, whether I order hot or iced drinks. I typically like a regular black hot coffee, and they have excellent medium and dark roast options every day. I love when they have donuts from Dunk during the weekends. Easy ordering process in person or through the Joe app, with the latter making it easy to order and pick up to avoid the line (which can get long during morning rush and especially on nice weekends). Ambiance is nice; small space with plenty of seating and a neat outdoor area during warmer months. The staff is super friendly and always kind to my pup, who usually accompanies me on walks to Whirlwind and likes to ask for pup cups in his squeaky howling way. Dogs are not allowed inside, but the staff are willing to deliver your order to you at the door if you are walking your dog and you either call or put a note in the Special Instructions option when you customize an item in your order in the Joe app. read more

I never write reviews but this pertains to business practice. I was asked to leave because they do not allow dogs on their OUTDOOR patio area because it's a safety concern. Had my dogs been acting in a way that was concerning, I would have no problem. But there were sitting at my feet hanging out. Would have been good to know before paying for the coffee.
