We wanted to check out the Monarch butterfly migration at Whiskey Island, and then - in keeping with the spirit and the theme - we thought we'd wander over to the Whiskey Island Marina and get some drinks and a snack. In case you haven't noticed, we're in Cleveland--not Hawaii. We have a lake, not an ocean and guess what, we have water treatment plants. But you know what? We still have beautiful places to enjoy our glorious supply of fresh water. In fact, I'm sure you'll be feeling pretty dang salty when you're looking for some and we've got it all. Whiskey Island just happens to be one of the beautiful places in Cleveland to enjoy our water front, and it's secluded to boot. And did I mention you can drink there? Oh yea. Try walking around other beaches with a cold beer on a summer day and see what happens. Heaven. You can chill out with some brews, have a picnic or a cookout with friends and play some outdoor activities right by Lake Erie. Got a boat? Dock it! Can't find it? Ask a local. Lots of green grass, a bar and grill to hang at, live music at night and a huge deck to socialize on. I'd say this place is a win. Yes, you have to drive past a water treatment plant to get to the park, but it's not in the park. Get over it. I mean, should we start on the horrible smog problems in *other* parts of our country? Also, in what world to you know of a water treatment plant that puts pollution *back* into the water? Seriously. Sometimes I think people just look for things to pick on Cleveland about (and most of the time they make no sense). If you don't like our glorious lake front of fresh water, then go back to the ocean. I'll gladly stay here and enjoy my summer in the land. #HatersGonnaHate read more

This place is pretty great. The views are amazing and I love the different array of people who enjoy time here. From families to party people, everyone is just having a good time. There are bands on the weekend and sand volleyball courts to get your drunk game on. If Whiskey Island wasn't so far away from where I live, I'd be here pretty often. Two very tiny complaints, and one is so very fixable it's ridiculous. One: The drinks are a little expensive for my taste. Almost $7 for a big can of twisted tea? C'mon...I know it has alcohol in it, but I can get that sized can of something for 99 cents at a gas station up the road. That being said, I and everyone else will still purchase these regardless. Two: The trash. Oh my goodness there is trash everywhere. I don't understand why people walk around and just throw their crap all over the place. There are plenty of trash cans people! It just bums me out to walk along the beach and have to watch where I step while picking up stuff best I can. If people won't throw their trash away, maybe have someone who works there walk around every once in awhile. read more

Whiskey Island is a great place to enjoy good weather. There are always volleyball games being played (leagues through Cleveland Plays), people picknicking, and a lot of live bands at Sunset Grille in the Summer. There are always a ton of boaters and people looking to have a good time out at the park/grill. Please disregard the drivel below...Very fun place. read more

Place has a great potential - blue skies, emerald grass, clear water but what's going on with all the garbage laying around? Seriously if you are not on the boat, you are on land among the empty plastic bottles, paper plates and animal corpses. What happened in here? We had few guesses: it was all floating n the lake and finally landed at the shore (eww) , or it was all under the snow and the snow melted. We loved being there regardless. Simply because there sun, water and wind. And Clevelanders don't need more to be happy. read more

BIG STUBBY TIME!!! I love Whiskey Island. It has always wound down my Sunday Funday in the greatest of ways, me and two friends used to hit it up after the beach and order the 22oz. Red Stripes perfectly nicknamed the Big Stubby. Sleeves with this slogan were once upon a time provided to all those who ordered, but I have yet to spot one this summer. Whiskey Island will "almost" make you forget where you really are, it looks beautiful as the sunsets on the disgustingly polluted water. Being so close to home, it gives me that special little nitch of the world feeling one gets when he is in a complete state of relaxation and comfort. read more

I tried to host a company picnic at Whiskey Island and ran into more problems than what it was worth. We wanted to play on the sand volleyball courts and hang by the water, but were unable to enjoy these offerings. It was hard to find, a pain to get to, and they wouldn't allow us to bring our own food. There were no grills installed and we would have had to have our (simple) picnic catered. They were uncompromising when I asked if we could show up without a "reservation" and they did nothing to try and accommodate our group. read more

All you people go away! This used to be the lovely, quiet, secluded and SECRET place where I docked my boat and had simple burgers and beers watching the sunset. Now you all know about it and pack the place full on weekends. There are bands and dancing (not *good* dancing mind you, but dancing nonetheless). I even had to wait to get a table on a THURSDAY for Christ's sake! If Cropicana returns for 2012 with their improved food and service then I figure I'll have to start laying caltrops on the road into the park. Oh yeah-- there's a sewage plant. Be afraid of it. Whiskey Island Marina has been taken over by the Metroparks as of a few years ago and has improved in their professionalism and operations. This still is not exactly a luxurious Marina by any means, but it is very functional and convenient. read more

I had just kind of 'mastered' Edgewater park and it's various parking lots when I had to go here for something (Burning River Fest). Thankfully I was able to park in the Edgewater lot and take a bus over to Wendy which actually helped give a lay of the land so I would know where to go and park myself next time. This is a pretty big multi-purpose area. Yes, there is the treatment plant which I suppose is unfortunately placed, but I take less issue with it than the big open sewer drain at Edgewater and the littered beach - this plant is contained and does not affect the beach/park as much in my opinion. There are really good views from here and I would definitely like to try coming up here again when there are a few less people than the levels of people brought by the festival. read more

ok, this is kinda for the marina. but more for wendy park, right smack dab next to it but kind of a part of it. small. isolated. i mean, i never even knew it existed until yesterday. ...but you have to go past the sewage treatment plant. seriously. poop? no thanks. and there were people swimming in the water. This is worst marina. The dry rack changes personal often. The dry rack has a bird Problem with birds every time the employees put the boat in the water the boat is covered with bird droppings. My boat and trailer were damaged. The Manager would never return my phone calls. Per their contract they are never responsible for any damage or personal injury. What a joke of a marina. And as far as the bar if you like drunks and over price poor food and service, this is the place for you. read more

It's a great place to retreat and unwind during the summer. Bands and DJ's almost every weekend with a wide range of music genre's. The bar can get packed but there are tables and a tiki bar outside. This is the place to be on holiday weekends. In response to the other review regarding the waste treatment plant... Waste is treated at the plant, not the island. It is not pumped right back to the beach! Do you really think that would be allowed? Is it stinky when you dive by? Yes, but it's also about a half mile from the marina so there is no smell at the marina. When you read the history of the island you understand why it is tucked away. The bar top is an old boat and the bar itself is the original saw mill. Rumor has it this was the place boats would bring alcohol from Canada during prohibition. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE, This is amazing gem found in Cleveland that you just wouldn't expect. Yes it is a bit harder to get here but once you know that you get off Edgewater/Whiskey Island exit and go down a long and winding road, around water treatment plants and buildings, you can visit a little piece of heaven. As a huge volleyball fanatic, whiskey island supports a beautiful community full of food, music, fun and most importantly VOLLEYBALL! No matter the skill, there is a league/division that even the most enthusiastic picnic volleyballer can play in. The nets are in good shape and the area is beautiful with a dock and boats surrounding you. I was so surprised that this was one of my first visit until just recently, but this is definitely something I will be visiting more often. Just coming here and relaxing with friends is something I would definitely recommend on a sunny and beautiful day in Cleveland! People need to preserve these beautiful spots, because it is one of Cleveland's hidden gem! read more

We were putting in at Edgewater Park to meet some friends that were staying at Whiskey Island on their sail boat. Approximately 12 - 15 friends were getting together to enjoy the great weather on the lake. My girlfriend and I got out early on the water and around noon decided to head to Whisky Island to grab some lunch and wait for our friends. We pulled up on our Jet Skis and was about to tie off to walk up to find out where we could dock. We had read on the website that there were transient docks available. An older gentleman with gray hair approached and I asked, where can I dock? He said there was no available space. I looked around knowing of the construction and said, My skis are small and I can tie up anywhere and we will be customers for lunch. His response was NO very firmly and loud. I then turned and left. A short while later, my friend Bob called and said come over the Whisky island. We just docked and due to my boat being so wide, I had to pay for two slips and your skis will fit nicely in my slip. So I did. We were eating, drinking and listening to music for an hour or so. We spent over $50.00 on bar food. When we went back to the boat and skis, a tow boat was there towing my brand new jet skis! Bob and I immediately got upset and the poor kid towing the skis was stuck in the middle. After a few words he understood, and said that he was called to tow the jet skis. While I was standing there, a man came on the radio and I heard him say that the jet skiers had been scoping out the place all day. I can only assume that was the gray haired man I inquired about docking earlier in the day. I can assure you, being 44 years old and quite responsible, I do not scope out marinas for any reason. The way we were treated and what I feel, targeted by your employee is completely unacceptable. This man needs to be trained in how to deal with the public. I think it is important for you to know how your customers are being treated. I have many boater friends and I can assure you everyone will hear my story. Stay away from here!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Wow! As a lifelong, career bartender I have to say this is my first enjoyable night out ever. I am not a drinker by choice, but have served the best cocktails in the country at a local watering hole. However, this fine beautiful evening watching a lovely Cleveland sunset over the lake, I found myself enjoying a fruity alcoholic cocktail and loving every sip!
