Although I found this nursery amazing with nice staff, I came here to get milkweed for my garden, I was extremely disappointed to only find tropical milkweed sold here. As a nursery, to sell a plant that can harm migration patterns and isn't native to the area shows the lack of knowledge that this nursery has. Please do better and actually sell the correct type of milkweed( narrow leaf milkweed etc.) instead of causing more harm than good! read more

I called today Whispering Tree about tomato plants and I was in luck that they got a delivery of tomato plants this morning. We are on our 4th week of Covid-19 stand-down and was happy just to know they were open. It was nice just to be out and looking at the gardening and outside items that had for sale and I wanted to take pictures but I let my wife do the looking while I chose the tomato plants, remember we are here just to buy essentials. The tomatoes at grocery stores are really sucking these days plus they are expensive, but we've been growing our tomatoes for the last 8 years and it's a major difference. Customer service is always helpful and great, I appreciate these associates being here, they helped us decide on what plant food to buy. I did but my 2 tomato plants 3 weeks ago at Walmart but they are dying. These plants I bought today look so healthy that I'm hoping for the best, I never grew celebrity tomatoes because I always buy Better Boy tomato plants but they only had them in 6 packs and I only needed 2, so that's why I got celebrity. I'm just reading Better Boy are better tasting tomatoes.. We'll see. read more

I mentioned to him that it seems he's just trying to get me to buy more instead of just acknowledging the purchase, he comes back with I just want to do the best for your space. "Woohoo! As good as it gets!", thus my 5 stars. However, I must be candid w/ you all, I wouldn't know a 5-star nursery from a 3-star one, but I can tell you why I dig this place. We have bought an Australian Willow, a Chinese Wisteria and a Japanese Wisteria in the last several months. Not a green thumb among this household, so these poor plants were starting life like a newborn whose mother was a fan of methamphetamines -- life was tough from the get-go!! True to form, we killed the Japanese Wisteria, and the Australian Willow is on life support! PROS: John and the gang are as friendly as any people you meet; they almost always seem to knock some percentage of your purchase; they love what they do, and are rooting for you and your plants; they have been more than gracious and patient as they help us get our willow back to a healthy lifestyle; they replaced our Japanese Wisteria, free of charge!!!! CONS: they don't sell green thumbs . . . We're starting anew w/ another Japanese Wisteria! So grateful for the guys giving us the replacement plant -- they didn't even hesitate, though I'm sure in the back of their minds they were thinking, "Show this thing some love!!!" They have patiently laid out a plan to nurture the willow, and have encouraged us to stop in w/ photos, so they can help us in this venture. I have been patronizing this nursery for years. Apparently there are now new owners. I purchased a plant this summer and was told full refund or exchange if it did not survive - as has been the standard policy for years. The plant died (it was only about $25). I went to return/exchange the plant but was told the warranty would not be honored as I was allegedly culpable for the plant's death. Why a local nursery would want to lose a long time customer over less than $25, I do not know, but it did. read more

The level of service has definitely declined since the business changed ownership! If what you want is in stock, you will be okay. Everything still looks lovely, too. But...if you want to order specific plants, make sure you watch them write down everything you say. I even spelled the names of shrubs, told them how many of each I wanted, and who the grower was that could provide them. They still messed up my order. The guy said what they gave me was correct and that sometimes nurseries put their own labels on the pots as his explanation of why the names were different than what I ordered; the number of plants was wrong as well. Then the young lady at the counter said the labels were the correct name and the grower did not have what I had ordered. When she highlighted the shrub on the growers list, the grower absolutely listed what I had wanted. I have made three trips trying to pick up the 19 plants I ordered and am still waiting, third weekend, for 2 that I need before my landscaper can come to install them! This impacts his business as well as inconveniencing customers. Oh, almost forgot, she made a comment in Spanish about being, "Loco." I am not nor am I deaf! Buyer beware! read more

I absolutely adore this place! Every single time I go in there, I am greeted by someone while still in the parking lot. They ask you if you're looking for something specific and they walk you around and show you things that meet that need. It's old fashioned customer service at it's finest. Yesterday I was greeted by name as I was getting out of my car and shown several plants that fit my bill! (I'm pretty predictable though-- something that flowers the longest that will fit in x space.) As an added bonus, for a small fee they will deliver to you and even plant it for you! And seriously, I feel a $70 fee to deliver and plant four 10 gallon plants and a tree including starter fertilizer and soil is a great deal! Especially when you take into consideration that I live in Guadalupe! As an older lady, it's this type of service that will keep me coming back year after year! read more

Over the past 20+ years I have purchased numerous plants and supplies from Whispering Tree Nursery, all with good results, despite my black thumb! Our treasured Coastal Redwood trees were each about five to six feet tall and the trunks were about an inch in diameter at the time of purchase in 2000. They are all now over 3 stories tall and the trunks are about three feet in diameter. They are so beautiful! We enjoy them daily. Thanks WTN! read more

They were really helpful when my work needed a large number of a particular species of native plant; found them for us within a week and left a nice message for us that our plants were ready for us. I agree Whispering Tree Nursery is a beautiful nursery & the staff helpful and friendly. I received a completely different response from them, however, when I asked if their Monrovia blueberry bushes had been treated with neonic (neonicotinoid) systemic pesticides (that have been linked in scientific studies to bee colony collapse disorder). I was curtly told by Ingrid they had no way of knowing and wouldn't know who to ask. I asked if it was possible to call the sales representative to ask, and was again curtly told "No". (to be fair it was over the weekend, & I understand corporations are closed, but it would be easy to contact their Monrovia sales representative later during the week & get back with me, I'm not in a rush). Ingrid seemed irritated by my question, though, and just didn't want to deal with it. I will now be looking for a nursery that places more value on the health of the beneficials that pollinate their beautiful plants, and is willing to inform the public of the practices of the growers they support. Even Home Depot as of the end of 2014 is requiring growers to label plants that have been treated with neonicotinoids - too bad this much better nursery is not willing to make an inquiry for a customer. I called Cherry Lane Nursery in Arroyo Grande and they offered to call their sales representative and will call me back. Looks like they have a new customer. read more

While on a road trip, my step-daughter suffered a bad burn from scolding hot tea. We found Whispering Tree Nursery to be the place closest by that might have aloe vera. Sure enough they had it! The man who helped us didn't miss a beat and just went right over to an arrangement, plucked off a leaf, and let us have it at no charge. He was so kind! We have been searching for a tree to put in our back yard and have had very little luck as we don't know much about trees and every place we have looked has been lacking in the service department. We went to Whispering Tree Nursery on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to find it open. We went in and instantly started seeing a lot of options. A woman (I wish I had her name) helped us immensely. She educated us on the kind of trees that would be best for the purpose we were looking for and what would do well in our yard. Staff was very available and beyond friendly. We purchased on citrus tree at the time and plan to go back as soon as we are ready to plant. Joel at Whispering Tree is awesome! My husband and I went into the nursery just toying with the idea of ripping up our front lawn and doing a "drought tolerant" landscape . I sent Joel pictures of landscapes that we liked and he understood the look we were going for. He came out to our house and drew a sketch of our front yard and what he thought would look nice. Then we went to the nursery and he showed us the plants he knew we would like that would be drought tolerant, bee friendly, and work with our current planter bed by the front of the house. We bought all the plants from him and did the work ourselves, but we had him come out and place the plants where he thinks they should go. Doing all the work ourselves was A LOT, but it was great to have Joel just a phone, txt or email away. He was always very quick to respond and extremely helpful. He has almost 30 years of plant knowledge and is a HUGE asset to this area. I am very thankful that we have someone as experienced with plants in this area and loves to share his knowledge.
