Service was not great. The wait to sit down was long, but understandable as they had a full house. After 45mins of waiting for our food and sipping on a pop and coffee, we never got checked in on or updated on our food. As soon as we stood up, another party was immediately sat down. Upon paying we were told our order was possible never put in. No apologies or anything. After a lot of checking and explaining we never received our food, I still had to pay for my cold coffee. On my never ending quest for the perfect country fried steak, I ended up here in fox Lake. I was too hungry to take a picture of the food when it came out, but over all 9/10 for the whole experience here. I ordered crispy hash browns and they were crispy! The country fried steak was nearly perfect. Topped off with a scoop of country gravy and an abnormally large chunk of sausage in it. I appreciate that. TERRIBLE RESTAURANT!! DO NOT GO HERE!! I just had the absolute worst customerservice experience at this terrible hole in the wall diner called whistle stop cafe. The hostess was sweet and customer service driven. The "manager" or as she claimed "she was kind of the owner" lol is laughable. She was condescending, rude immature no sense of customerservice argumentative and talked over me or attempted to. She would not take ownership for her failure as a manager. I ordered food through GrubHub and was delivered the wrong order. They did not confirm with the GrubHub driver that they had the right order and would take no ownership over their poor management and no confirmation of their orders. She basically said we get so busy that we can't confirm who takes the orders and they just set them on a shelf to take. So basically anyone can walk in grab food off the grub hub shelf and walk out! After much back and forth and in a very condescending fashion she said "as a one time courtesy, I will remake your food, but if this should happen again, we would not be accommodating." Then, when I asked for her name as she claimed to be the owner she refused to give me her name. Any true "owner" would provide confirmation it was her restaurant. She clearly was some borrowed second hand probably back of the house cook who took the phone call. I would not recommend ordering here, dining Inn or doing any business with a organization who clearly does not value customerservice or frankly their customers! I will never return here again!! Now Serving Mold: We were seated in the very back section/room of Whistle Stop restaurant in Fox Lake. Within minutes, I began having issues breathing. I looked up and there are multiple ceiling tiles that were saturated and completely infested with mold. We immediately notified the staff and the other patrons that were sat/being sat in the section. The staff did not seem to be concerned and continued to seat & serve like normal. We left the restaurant as it is a hazard and refuse to subject ourselves to that. Please note, we have been to this restaurant over a dozen times but have never been sat in this location within the building. read more

This will be a quick one. With cute and on theme decor, friendly and helpful staff, and food that's better than most places nearby, this is a must-try for breakfast. I had potato pancakes with a side of sausage links. Personally, I'd like my potato pancakes to be a bit more potato heavy but the sausage was spot on if just a little pricey. We only waited for about 15 minutes to be seated which isn't bad at all for peak breakfast hours on a Saturday and the food came out in a very reasonable amount of time. We stopped in on a week night for dinner. The restaurant has a great train theme and decor. The staff were very friendly and helpful with suggestions for the very large menu. I went with the gyro sandwich with tater tots. It was good and a lot of food! The meat was lightly grilled and the pita was warm. The sandwich was served with a generous amount of fresh onion and sliced tomatoes with a pickle spear on the side. The tzatziki was great too, creamy and flavorful. The tater tots were hot with a crispy exterior and tender interior. We'll likely stop by again as their breakfast menu has lots of exciting options. read more

Sweet little Cafe located in the Center of Fox Lake. I stopped in on a rainy day for breakfast and to get some work done. It does not offer a large indoor seating and had a revolving door of business. Definitely a staple for people in the area. They were short on servers that day but my server was very accommodating for me and the food came out quickly. I ordered Biscuits and Gravy with eggs and Ham with a side of Chocolate Chip Pancakes. After doing a little 4th of July celebrating I wanted to get some breakfast and my buddy says that this is the place to go so we went over. The place is totally decorated in a railroad motif which is cool. The place is split in two rooms with the front having a lunch counter and booths while the back is booths and tables. The staff is very friendly and everyone who walked by asked if everything was ok or need a coffee warm up even if they were not our server. The menu has some great breakfast if you look it over but the #4 sounded good with a 1/2 biscuit and gravy with meat of choice and two eggs. I knew I was getting the sausage links because they looked like good jumbo thin skin kind as another table was served. The food came quick and looked good with plenty to eat. My eggs were perfect sunny side up. The jumbo sausage links were just what I thought, tasty and not greasy at all. The biscuits and grave had nice fresh light biscuits covered with thick gravy that had plenty of meat in it. Having eaten here many times, I can say there isn't anything on the menu that I haven't enjoyed. Even the specials are good. There is a ton of seating as well as a breakfast bar, but it does get busy for breakfast on the weekends. I've had both breakfast and lunch, and now they are open for dinner.
