The food was very good and the service was fast. I would highly recommend this establishment.

After walking out of Granny's ip the street after waiting 40 minutes for my ordered food, we stoped into the new Cubby Hole. In 10 minutes I had my meal. Same out of busy'ness, just managed better. The Cubby Hole has had a following for years and years and after moving twice opened up at a new location. While we were frequent breakfast goers at the aforementioned restaurant, that owner didn't have the time to listen to our complaint after the 40 minutes of waiting for our food and subsequently walking out before eating. Updating not from food it's good but the owner or manager. The ladies are great but it was busy one Saturday so we had to set at the bar. The owner or manager. He's talking to a customer at end of bar and suddenly sneezes directly in his hand. He then proceeds to wipe his snotty hand across the bar then on his pants. As he's talking he's making a mimosa for someone, cutting up fruit and never washed his hands. I about threw up and not sure I want to go back. I know disgusting things happen in restaurants but not usually in front of you. Any one else disgusted by this? read more

Not a huge breakfast person but this place is really great. Usually get one of there skillets always super tasty. Tried there cubby club for lunch and wow one of the best club sandwiches ever. Service with a smiling face always wonderful. read more

a little over a week ago my daughter I found the cubby hole and thoroughly enjoyed breakfast. we both ordered the hangover skillet and loved it. yesterday we returned and my daughter ordered and loved the meat lovers skillet. I on the hand, I ordered the butt steak and eggs breakfast it was the BEST I have had in more years than I can remember. oh yeah, the side of fruit side was awesome. how was the service you ask? 10 out of 10. and as for the ambiance, spacious and comfy. we will be back. read more

Big menu with something for everyone. It is a small diner so if you see a table, grab it! It seems to have a lot of local loyalty which is always a good sign when choosing where to eat. I got the egg skillet with chorizo and they did not skimp on chorizo. They were also quick to refill coffee, something my husband appreciates even more than I appreciate them not using bagged/frozen potatoes!! If I was in the area and need a bite.. Breakfast diners are a big deal in northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin. There are many to choose from but The Cubby Hole is consistently one of the best. Seat yourself at the counter or your party of four at a booth. The Menus are there for you. Meals are inexpensive (two can eat for $12) and have that home cooked accent. The Biscuits and gravy are my personal favorite. Great coffee, and service will keep me coming back. weekend rush hour service will make it difficult to find a seat at times, but if a good country breakfast you seek, it is worth your time to wait. read more

This has been one of my favorite breakfast places. It's a small place, it's always crowded, and they have a small parking lot. You seat yourself, and then the wait staff comes by with coffee. They're slipping a little at being attentive, but they're personable. Kitchen could be a little more speedy. Gets a little drafty when temps dip down below zero, but it's an old building. read more

I had lunch from this place a couple of years ago and wasn't impressed. The other day a co-worker wanted to get breakfast so I decided to give it another shot. I wish I hadn't. The food was bland and tasteless (what there was of it, which wasn't much). For what I paid, I would have been MUCH better off at Mickey D's. If that wasn't enough, my stomach churned for most of the day as well. Needless to say, I'll be AVOIDING this place from now on. read more

First off The Cubby Hole is a tiny place but don't let the name fool you, the portions are large and the food & coffee are delicious and served hot! Waitresses are nice and chat with you. One thing we noticed is that they don't rush you, if you want to sit and talk, they leave you alone. Will definitely visit again. read more

Hands down my favorite breakfast place in Lake and McHenry Counties. The service is great and the food is even better. Granted you really can't mess up bacon and eggs, but everything else is delicious (hashbrowns, corn beef hash, gravy, etc). A must try if you're in the area. You will not be disappointed. read more

Just ate at Cubby Hole yesterday morning and I still have an upset stomach. I ordered a strip steak with eggs, hash browns and toast. The steak was a strip of undercooked fat with a strip of overcooked meat...!!! Guess that's why it's called strip steak..!! So much for med well.. !! Everything else was good tasting, big deal....!! Looks like another restaurant to strike off the list. I have a silly rule..if I get sick after I eat in your restaurant..well I won't return..!! ****Updated: 6/15/17 Servers are very friendly, but the food has suffered a huge setback. I don't know what has changed there, but whatever it is it's not good. The Cream of Broccoli soup used to be a favorite of mine, not anymore. We used to be pretty regular customers, but now anytime we eat there, we leave disappointed. read more

Went to the cubby hole for the first time ever yesterday. It seems like the place to go around here and is usually packed which is why we always go somewhere else. This time we found that for a Sunday brunch time it wasn't that busy. I was expecting WOW and got "ehh". The bacon that came on top of my southern breakfast was burnt and dry and seemed like maybe it had been refried... I tried to eat it but it was like crispy jerky. Also the bicuits and gravy didn't really taste like much...needed more sausage for flavor. My boyfriend seemed to enjoy his country fried steak and our daughter liked her Mickey mouse pancakes but I wasn't impressed. read more

What a dump. Came.here with my family and neighbor for breakfast. My neighbor had rave reviews about the place, saying it was the best breakfast in the area. Now I've only lived in Richmond a year now, and they their whole life, so I thought they knew what they were talking about. They didn't. We came with a party of six to an empty restaurant, and they seated us fairly quickly but then made us wait forever while our waitress took a phone call or some dumb thing. The place itself is a tiny outdated box of a house made into a restaurant. It looks like nothing's been updated since the 70's, which can be charming if done right, but this wasn't. It just looked like a run down dump, inside and out. So we wait forever for the waitress to take our order, wait even longer for our food, and it is awful. Small portions of half cooked hashbrowns, slimy over easy eggs and stale cold toast. Even the coffee tasted bad somehow. I mean, seriously? How do you mess up coffee? On top of it the waitress was rude and condescending, like she was doing us a favor by bringing us our nasty food. Wish I never listened to my neighbor and won't be coming back. read more

We loved this place. It's cash only so be prepared. It's a small town diner, very cozy with a friendly feel. We were greeted immediately by a friendly waitress who promptly brought our drinks. We had biscuits and gravy, hash browns and bacon. Everything was really good. It was exactly what we expected from a little dinner. The service was wonderful and everyone there helped each other out. A nice little retro diner with consistently good food, daily specials and exceptional servers. Always pleasant and helpful servers who know the menu well and even suggest adaptations to listed dishes. There are usually a long list of daily specials that are exceptional. They cook from scratch, so a roast beef dinner or sandwich is not something that has been microwaved, but roast beef and gravy like grandma used to make. They usually have a nice selection of fresh pies and they go out of their way to make your meal an exceptional experience. They brew their own iced tea, so they get lots of extra points from me. They are only open til 2 or 3 pm in the winter, but expand their hours to included dinner in the summer season. Clean rest rooms, competent and experienced help and all around good food. They don't take plastic, so bring cash or be prepared to cross the parking lot to the ATM at the tobacco purveyor. read more
