In August of 2023, my upstairs neighbors' apartment had a leak which caused their bathtub to fall through the ceiling of my bathroom. See the pictures below on how my "fixed" tub now looks. We have also had a black mold issue that has been "fixed" several times. These small issues are fine to deal with considering the price of rent. What caused me to finally leave this review was an event that occurred the other night. To preface the story, renovations and cleanings are taking place which the residents were informed via email. In this email, 7a-7p were the hours listed for vendors to come in. On Tuesday, my roomate and I got back to the apartment after leaving at 7pm to 3 unknown males in our apartment. My roomate and I, as young women living alone, did not feel safe or comfortable walking into our apartment with unknown men. After this upsetting situation, my roomate called the office several times and left voicemails (they were never returned). I went to the office the next day during office hours and there was no one there. My roomate finally got a hold of a staff member today just to get told we were overreacting and that there is no guarantee it won't happen again. My roommate then asked if there was anyway to get a 24 hour notice and was told "no". To reiterate, I am not upset about the cleaners or maintenance staff doing their jobs. I am upset that a group of men came into my apartment outside of the hours in the email. This caused me to feel unsafe in the apartment I pay to live in which is unacceptable. Edit from April 2026: Unfortunately Northview was sold again to another large housing company that doesn't care about the quality of apartments or the people living in them. Electric costs have gone up exponentially with no warning. Why am I paying almost $100 for electricity when I work 70 hours a week and am never there? Additionally, our HVAC has been on the fritz and anytime a work order is submitted to fix it, all they do is reset the breaker (which I have already done and apparently the maintenance staff think since I'm a woman, I'm not capable of doing so). The black mold has now spread from just the bathroom to my bedroom and the common area. Parents, please do not let your children live here. Students, while the cheap rent is great you really get what you pay for. LIVE ANYWHERE ELSE!!

For example, she was to oversee the painting of several of the rooms in the house before we moved in and never followed up on it so that on our move-in day only then did she realize the painting hadn't been done. And then she did not remove all of the furniture from the previous renter. not only that, but she continued to try to sell us property on the side, even though we had a contract for the rental and told us not to worry about it if we bought something from her. After about the third delay in the move-in process, we told her that we had decided to find another rental and asked for our deposit back which she refused to do. Even though the house is not ready per the contract terms within 15 days of the move-in she still refused to return our money. In the future, we will choose to do business with more ethical realtors.

Matchbox's customer service, Kyle, is absolutely useless, as are the supposed management, who are clueless. This company is the epitome of what is wrong with the renting market today and exists solely for the exploitation of the JMU community. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Lastly, you are charged a processing fee anytime you make a payment. They will charge you for anything and everything possible, and the apartments are below average! They take advantage of student living. My guess is although my son has taken care of his unit, he will not get his deposite back based on the way this reallty operates. Highly do NOT recommend.
