The Merchant Warehouse - Veggies cheese sandwich

We had completed the tough Green Gardens Trail this morning, including a 15-minute stretch of downpour rain. The first thing that came to mind for me was... fish and chips, of course! That, and a couple of really good local beers on tap. We got a tip from another place in this cool little town that The Merchant was a great place to get a beer. They have a fantastic outdoor deck that sits right on the water, too. This was our second visit, so we sat inside at a table by the windows. The fish and chips here was in the top two we had during our entire trip in western Newfoundland. Very lightly battered, light golden cooked to perfection. After burning all those calories, a (true) pint of Quidi Vidi draft and a big order of fish and chips was on the money. Every one of the wait staff here was extremely nice and friendly. I believe my wife whispered to someone that it was my birthday (which it was), so I got a special little cheesecake in a glass with a candle. Then, the owner came over and encouraged the entire dining room to sing a happy birthday for me. What a treat... couldn't have been a much better place to end the day. The Merchant probably ended up being our favorite place for beers and casual food in Bonne Bay. If you're still hungry, they have a great 1950's themed ice cream parlor in the front. We did not opt for the evening of "getting screeched in" that they hold one night a week in the restaurant, but we did hear from others staying at our inn that it involved a lot of singing and drinking cod liver oil on top of the rum!

Giving 3 stars only for the hospitality. Food was below average. Veggie sandwich had 3 small pieces of bell peppers in it, that's it. My partner took a veggie burger, which had just a bun and dry patty. Food was disappointing for sure. Now, coming to the amazing points-They had free Wi-Fi. Amazing service for sure. Extremely sweet people working there. They even do screeching ceremony every week. The place you enter looks so peppy and fun, and the back restaurant has complete cottage vibes, unlike the front part. They were ready to customize the food to veg, which was sweet of them. This review is purely based on a vegetarian point of view. There are not many restaurant options in this town, so definitely worth going if you want good hospitality.

You can see mountain view from one side of the restaurant and nice view of the bay on the other side. I would suggest to make reservations coz it's super packed during dinner hours. The servers are busy throughout the meal and it's hard to get them. We tried varieties of the food on the menu and some special items not included in the menu. The appetizers are tasty but main is a bit plain to my taste. - Bread and butter: butter is so soft with nice scent of herbs, bread is also tasty. We found that the bread in Newfoundland is generally more sour than average. - Root vegetable salad: Very creative dish. Varieties of veggie include squash and carrot are cut into nice thin pieces. Burnt almond and wild rice were the highlight of the dish. - Mushroom on bread ($22, not on the menu): I really enjoyed the creamy flavour of the mushroom. - Cumen crusted lamb leg with couscous: it was not bad. The meat itself doesn't have much flavour but it goes really well with the sweet sauce. - Cod with sun dried tomatoes: The fish is fresh but overcooked. - Halibut and scallop ($52, not on the menu): Again, everything is fresh but the fish is overcooked and flavoureless. In general, the restaurant has nice dining environment with average service and amazing appetizer dishes. My favourite dish here was the bread and the mushroom on toast.

The meal was delicious, service was good, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the sun set over the mountains as I ate dinner - there's a great wall of windows that makes for a stunning setting.
