Specialties
White Crane provides kids and adults of all ages the opportunity to learn traditional Okinawan Karate and Kobudo (weapons) as well as Japanese Aiki Budo (Aikido, Ju Jutsu, etc). We welcome, and encourage, all fitness levels and abilities: training at White Crane can work for everyone!
We offer a very welcoming, family-based atmosphere, aiming to help you reach your goals. We are committed to providing the very best in traditional martial arts training. We are also a non-competitive school. Students are encouraged to participate in tournaments, however it is not necessary. They are encouraged to go for the experience, not for medals (medals are just kind of an added benefit).
History
Established in 2016.
Renshi Matthew Butler began training in the Martial Arts in 1995 and has over 20 years of experience. His teacher passed his school (Brattleboro School of Budo) on to Matthew, as is tradition, and is now White Crane Martial Arts.
Meet the Business Owner: Matthew B.
Renshi Matthew began his martial arts training in 1995 at the age of 15 in the art of Tae Kwon Do at the Brattleboro Recreation Center in VT. After 2 years his teacher moved away to college. Matthew, wanting to continue his training, asked his teacher where else could he train, his teacher mentioned Patrick Donahue and the Brattleboro School of Budo. So, in the summer of 1997 Matthew joined the Brattleboro School of Budo and began his training in all that was offered there.
July 2015 was the 20 year anniversary for the Brattleboro School of Budo. A remarkable accomplishment! Yet sadly in Jan. 2016 Sensei Patrick Donahue, due to a number of reasons, decided to close the school but not after offering to sell it to Matthew first. He could not pass up the opportunity. So in February 2016 Matthew became the proud owner of White Crane Martial Arts!
