However, there was a ton of live plants and truckloads of fresh vegetables for sale. Couple that with gourmet cheeses and baked and canned goods and you have a situation you could spend a lot of money on. As a snack, we bought a jalapeño cheese roll which was very good. You could definitely do some wallet damage here. I'd like to see this place on a weekend. My one criticism are the produce prices. $3.99/lb for slicing tomatoes and $12 for a watermelon. Other produce is equally expensive. This is rather boujee pricing and it's obvious they aren't targeting the average consumer. I love supporting local farmers but prices like this make it difficult. Come and check it out for yourself. It really is a sight to see and you could spend a whole morning or afternoon here. But guard your wallet. It would be easy to get carried away here.

The Thursday market is year round at the armory sports complex. This Saturday, the weather was perfect for a stroll through downtown Southern Pines. We parked nearby and walked to the market. The Saturday open market is dog friendly. Vendors vary. It's a good size, not overwhelming, but provides ample products. There was live music and a variety of local items for sale. I purchased turnips, tomatoes, and loose-leaf tea. Each of the vendors we interacted with were friendly and sold their products at reasonable prices.

I am sad that I didn't try a bite on my own. The Greek Tomato pie is something that must be made by the Greek gods themselves. It was absolutely amazing. The market is fully covered, providing some much needed shade, and there are some permanent vendors that have an indoor facility such as an ice cream parlor, candy and fudge, general store, etc. There are full bathroom facilities on site, and even a restaurant called the Moose Cafe at the back which served southern favorites. Of course, what is offered depends on the season. You'll find a bounty of selections starting in late spring, through the summer, and into the fall. In the winter, produce starts to become more sparse, but there is no shortage of places to buy your Christmas tree if you celebrate with one of those. Best advice is to bring cash, but many vendors can take a card these days. You may get charged a little extra for using plastic in some spots though, and to help with these folks margins, cash is preferable.

Turns out I just never had a good peach before (poor, California girl). Peak season is mid-July to mid-August. I learned a bit about peaches today. Come earlier, and they'll be "cling", as in, the pit sticks to the flesh. Right now (late August), they're "freestone", and it easily falls off. I forget what they're called during the stage in between, but having samples them for myself, I'll just call them perfect. =) I'll definitely be making a trip down there next summer for another half bushel.
