Calking around sink was black and perhaps dangerous -Towels were thin, faded, worn-out rags -Shower was a trickle -Gap around the door was BIG and let in a lot of light from the hallway -Needed help with luggage upstairs--no one was available -Snacks and water required cash payment -The bed was made but the sheets had not been changed; I paid extra to have my sheets changed -Someone had used my toilet when they changed the sheets, leaving fecal matter in the toilet and on the seat; it was not flushed and left very dirty. -In all, I had a terrible three nights. Great selection of breakfast choices! Owners are very accommodating and nice. They have a dog, " teddy" sweetest animal ever. The rooms are very clean, lots of space to enjoy. The Good: * Joanne, the innkeeper is lovely and wonderful. She was by far the best part of my stay and texts you to check in. * The location- if you're wanting to be in or around Waitsfield, the White Horse Inn is centrally located The Bad: * Do not stay in the "bunk bed room" unless you're a little kid and don't mind hard mattresses that's practically on the ground and a steep ladder. The room was like a jail cell and very cramped/small, dark, and musty. * The walls are PAPER thin. You can literally hear everything including your neighbors at all times of the day and night. During my stay there was a party going on a few doors down from me and I was kept up all night from 10PM through 5AM and then again at 7AM when someone was leaving in the morning and slamming their door. Terrible nights sleep. * No breakfast- there used to be apparently a great breakfast but since the owners changed they took that benefit away so now you're on your own to find your own meal. * I communicated my poor experience to management via email who basically replied "oh well sorry you had a bad stay" but would not make things right. You get what you pay for here. You're better off at an Airbnb in the area. I certainly won't be staying again and will be sharing with my friends to advise them not to book here. read more

I have not been on a true vacation in several years. My friend and I stayed here for the Vermont portion of our trip. The White Horse Inn was EXACTLY what we needed. Relaxed, Quite, Serene and just Beautiful. My favorite spot on the property was relaxing by the pond and just listening to nature. Our hosts, Bob, Allen & Teddy (the resident canine) were all laid back and kind. Breakfast was prepared by resident chef, Allen, and was delicious. The select evening treats were a nice touch. This B&B is remotely located but within reasonable distance from tourist attractions and has plenty of local attractions (Skiing, hiking, rivers, swimming holes and abundant nature) as well. We are looking forward to revisiting again in the future read more

A beautiful location and B and B, full of charm. Very comfortable with a fireplace room full of seating areas, complimentary cookies,( so good!) ice tea and all the fixings for hot coffee or tea, a game room for relaxing and a bar area( not open during our stay). Breakfast the next day, which comes with the room was great, many choices from fruit to egg and cheese strudel and fresh blueberry pancakes. The room was clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. I went to Vermont for my first time with my boyfriend two weekends ago to leaf peep. It was important for me to stay at a gay-owned bed and breakfast. From the time I booked online to checking out, I received the best and kindest hospitality! The food and the cookies are homemade by Allen and Bob manages the property and meets all guests. They have all the food one can ask for in Vermont in a New England style bed and breakfast. The fellow guests were also pleasant. We stayed here with a large group of about 30 people for a wedding at a nearby barn. The inn keepers Bob and Allen were superb hosts and made us felt right at home. A wide selection of foods were offered each day during breakfast, including breads, cereal, baked goods, hot savory items like bacon, sausages, eggs, and waffles. If you're lucky, lox might be served -- take a couple of these because they're that good! My husband and son also enjoyed the fresh baked cookies that were available in the fireside room. I would have given the WHI 5 stars if we were able to have hot showers whenever we wanted. The plumbing is a little whacked on the third floor, so be warned that you might have to endure an unexpected cold shower. read more

We loved the White Horse Inn. We were in town for a wedding and didn't do a lot of research before booking our stay. What a pleasant surprise! We had a cozy room with a comfortable bed. The room temperature was perfect with the open window in the summertime, but we had the option of using an air conditioner if needed. The owners are very friendly and provide a lot of special details such as delicious baked goods, tea, and coffee always available. The location is great and the property is very pretty. The breakfast was definitely the best we've ever had at an inn or hotel-- Absolutely delicious. If we find ourselves back in the area, we will absolutely be booking a room at the White Horse Inn. We had a wonderful stay here recently. Bob, Allen and Teddy (the pup) did their best to ensure we had a great time. Clean, comfortable room and a tasty, filling breakfast (especially my weakness, blueberry pancakes). The common room boasts a beautiful fireplace. I can imagine what it must be like when lit in the winter. Coffee, tea and fresh-baked cookies were always available there, also. The inn itself was quiet and restful. There is a pond in the back that you can sit by and enjoy. If you're staying in the area, look no further. I think you'll be very happy here. read more

My wife and I just got back from a long weekend here. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Bob and Allen. The breakfast provided every morning was top notch. Allen (a trained baker) prepared all the pastries, bacon, sausage and what I call the protein and carb of the day. On 3 separate days, our protein were a mushroom frittata, egg strudel and eggs with cheese. Our carbs included Belgian waffles, pancakes and a bread pudding French toast (crazy, huh - but yummy). The rooms are small, but comfortable. They were immaculate and I always appreciate that. Next to the dining area was a place to buy spirits and a place to hang out and watch TV in HD and to play board games. On the main floor was the wonderfully cozy family room with a big fireplace. In this room was also their Keurig maker where you could get coffee, tea or hot chocolate any time. Also, there were alway freshly baked goods in this room. Lastly, it is right across the street from Mt. Ellen and 5 minutes from Sugarbush. When you want to go to dinner, Waitsfield is a quick 10 minute drive. read more

All in the details I say. When you arrive you already know you have arrived at a real special place. Gorgeous location in the mountains, with ample acreage and a real nice setting. Little touches are all over the hotel. Super convenience as well for guests. A huge game room that doubled for storage for my bicycle on rainy days. A fridge offered for my room on request... not a problem. One of the owners is a pastry chef, and is constantly baking. Cookies are out all over in the morning, and little nibbles to eat everywhere. Never mind that the breakfast is some of the best breakfast food I have ever had. French Toast with orange zest and Cointreau. Applewood smoked Bacon, even with mustard glaze. Sour cream pancakes.. blueberry waffles... scrambled eggs with creme fraische, strudels, quiches, frittatas, popovers on and on.. TO die for... The hosts are so nice, so accommodating, and also have great suggestions for food and ideas to do around the area. I still miss this place.. cant wait to go back..and it is great value. This place is a real gem. The innkeeper was super nice, the breakfast was spectacular, and it wasn't nearly as expensive as you would expect given the quality and ambiance of the family room where people congregate around the hearth. The rooms were nice and clean, though not as homey as I would have liked. The room needed a little more table space, but that was pretty minor. The food, customer service, family room, and price more than make up for all of my very minor complaints. Good hiking is also very close by. read more

This is probably my favorite inn/hotel in New England. I truly felt like I was at home in this inn. The owners were happy to switch my reservation to another weekend when the wind chill was too low for skiing (demonstrating excellent customer service). There are 2 large recreation rooms. They have a fireplace, books, plenty of games, and lots of seating. It was a perfect way to relax after a day of skiing. There are plenty of snacks, treats, and drinks available all the time. One of the owners is the chef here and his food was my favorite part of staying here. I kid you not, this food was basically gourmet and you'd be charged top dollar of this cuisine if you were in a restaurant. This morning I had a potato basil frittata and I'm frantically looking for a similar recipe online. The chef is not only a great cook, he is also a great baker. There were always cookies and desserts galore available in the common rooms. I come to sugarbush frequently and i know where i will be staying next time! read more

We keep coming back to the White Horse Inn a couple of times a year, both in the winter ski season and in the fall foliage season. Bob and Allen go out of their way provide a comfortable and friendly place to stay . The rooms and common areas are spotlessly clean and comfortable. The gourmet home-cooked breakfasts are delicious and hearty, and are served in a very attractive dining room. A variety of rooms are available, depending on your needs (king, queen, 2x twins, 2x doubles, even bunk beds in a few rooms), and pets can be accommodated. It's very conveniently located, near all the attractions in the scenic Mad River Valley, and it's a good base from which to explore the Green Mountain National Forest. read more

Stayed here for just one night while skiing Sugarbush and couldn`t have been happier. The rooms were small but neat and clean. The price was very reasonable considering the proximity to the slopes. The (price included) breakfast in the morning was excellent. as were the molasses cookies offered up at night. My only minor quibble was that the room was a bit too warm for my comfort at night; there was no way to lower the room temperature. (I prefer a chilly room to sleep in.) Bob and Allen are excellent and gracious hosts. This is a great place to stay when in the Vermont area. The rooms are clean and comfortable. This B&B is not geared towards those looking for luxury accommodations, this place is for those who want great accommodations at a great price! When booking the reservation online, they clearly state the square footage of each room, along with their price. There is no reason to feel that you didn't get what you paid for since you can look through the images of what the room looks like prior to booking (the images posted truly represent what the rooms look like). I selected one of the larger rooms, and was very pleased with the space/cost. There is an issue with the hot water during showers on the 3rd floor, which I did not know about ahead of time. They give you notification in your room if you are staying on that floor (3rd floor). Sometimes you will get a short blast of cold water during your shower (less than a minute), but sometimes you won't. They are currently working on trying to identify the issue, but even the experts are having a tough time trying to resolve the issue. It was not something that was unbearable. This place is in the middle of everything. You can reach the Waterbury/Stowe, Burlington, and Woodstock areas within 45 min -1.5 hours driving distances. The scenery is beautiful in this area! If you are looking for a delightful place to stay that is a comfortable and has great food with a welcoming atmosphere, then this is it! read more

Stayed at the White Horse Inn this weekend and when I walked in I smelled the comforting smell of cookies baking. Yes, I said cookies all day long fresh cookies. Not just one flavor cookie but 3. NOM NOM NOM This Inn is not for you if you like to be served on a silver platter. It is for those who want to feel like they are home. The owners and the manager were very welcoming and checking to make sure the roaring fire was roaring. We enjoyed our experience at WHI. The Inn Keepers were incredibly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was "gourmet" with the chef having been trained at Johnson and Wales in Providence. Paper bags were provided with the intent that you take something home with you. Kuerig Coffee and three different kinds of home made cookies were available at all times. Rooms were neat and pleasant. Bed was comfortable though a bit noisy. Some furniture didn't match but who really cares. Common rooms were welcoming and comfortable. A negative for our room was the shower. You could not control the temp of the water which switched from scalding to icy in what seemed like 30 second intervals. We assumed it was an inn wide issue so failed to complain. A check with other guests revealed it was only our room thus indicating that there was something wrong with the "mixer" in our shower. This is the only thing which prevents us from giving a five star review. Suggest not accepting room 301 unless confirming they have repaired the problem. read more

We arrived at night during a shower, which transformed the dirt parking lot into a muddy pit. I really think they should at least pave the parking lot. The building is clean, but old. Maybe some new carpet would help? The owners are polite and helpful, and being able to get hold of them at any time with their cell number is a novel solution to having few staff members. The common area has a large functioning fireplace, coffee machine and baked goods available all day. The room was small, but clean and comfortable. We stayed at The White Horse Inn under the new owns Allen and Bob. For $120 a night, this is a true diamond in the rough. These two owns couldn't be more genuine in having you stay at their Inn. Upon arrival, we snacked on freshly baked brownies and oatmeal cookies with fresh coffee. The rooms were small but perfectly appointed with what you'd expect - tv, wireless, cable, clean rooms, bathrooms. The good news is you will not want to stay in your room since there is a huge sitting room where the warm fire blazes all night long. The game room downstairs has every game your kids (or yourself) will want to play. You feel like you are home. Breakfast from Chef Allen was delicious. How many family owned Inn's prepare Egg Struedel, baked french toast and everything else you can imagine? We left stuffed for a full day of skiing - which is literally a 3 minute drive away. I stayed at the White Horse when I was taking a AASI/PSIA course as a snowboard instructor this past March. I really was pleased at the experience I had! According to the owners, they had just bought and re-opened this Inn, and in my estimation, they have done a great job. The rooms were adequate, warm and cozy, and nice and quiet.. The breakfast was a meal made for a king, with great choices and gourmet specialties made by chef Allen. I only wish there was a dinner menu as well. I guess this forced us out to town, but I was happy to come back to sit in the living/common room, which had a delicious array of baked goods, coffee and teas. Bob, one of the owners, dropped in occasionally, to tend the fire and chat during the night. As a member of the professional ski/snowboard instructors' association, I"m not exactly raking in the dough, so the White Horse offered the best rates in the area and I feel like I got a lot for my money. I'd recommend the White Horse Inn to anyone. The location is easy to get to; right on the Sugarbush access road , real close to Mt. Ellen and just down from Sugarbush South. I"m planning on staying there this summer, when I visit the area again. read more

Love this B&B! Bob and Allen are lovely and they me feel at home there during my stay last summer. Allen makes AMAZING breakfast and baked goods for the fireplace room each evening. Bob knows a lot about the area, and where to get the best maple syrup. I stayed for two weeks on business and they were very accommodating to my odd hours of work. Very comfortable and homey. During the weekends, I heard other guests who were actually pleased that their usual B&B was full for the weekend so that they could discover The White Horse Inn! Wow!!! Great hospitality and all you could want in a Bed and Breakfast. The Inn is probably medium sized as far as BnBs go and located very close to both skiing (Sugarbush) and popular wedding venues (Round Barn). We stayed recently when attending a wedding at the Round Barn and found the drive to be just a short distance away. Room: Our room was very comfortable and had all the amenities you could need- toiletries, hair dryer, TV, and a comfy couch in addition to a very comfortable and well made bed. The room was spotless and a HUGE step up from the motel we stayed at the night before. It truly felt like staying in someone's home. Food: We had breakfast the next morning in the dining area, and I was blown away by the selection and quality. Usually the free breakfast at a motel is nothing to write home about, but the breakfast service at the Inn was fantastic and just what we needed to start the day. They have a great spread of fruit, yogurt, juices, toast and bagels, teas and coffees, so many baked goods, and a few hot entrees (we had the option of cheesy scrambled eggs, bacon, and French toast). This would be a GREAT hearty breakfast to have before skiing if you come in the winter! Service: Everything from the online booking to checking out was such a breeze. Bob, the co- owner, truly cares about his guests and does everything to make it a great experience. We arrived a bit early before the 2:00 check in time because we wanted to get ready before the wedding we were attending and our room was already cleaned and ready for us. Bob was so friendly and gave us recommendations for a local taxi service (that we didn't end up using) as well as asked us about ourselves and our plans for the trip. Additionally, the Inn owners provide so many extra perks for their guests, like fresh coffee 24/7 and fresh homemade baked foods prepared by Chef Allen, available in the sitting room. We definitely ate a few of the cookies when we got back from the wedding! I cannot say enough good things about the hospitality. The little things truly push the service above and beyond. Ambience: Very quaint, quintessential Vermont without being cheesy. Everything is tastefully decorated and will really make you feel like you're in Vermont! The interior is beautifully decorated, the breakfast was fantastic and the service is great. The owner even personally led us to our room.... it felt like a home away from home. Both make everything click and run smoothly. We have talked to many returning guests who come back every year. Many come back in the ski season and again in the summer for other sports.
