The Belding House fit both of these criteria and then vastly exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was just wonderful, although there was far too much of it. A white-wine-poached pear, two cream-cheese-blueberry blintzes, maple sausages, fresh fruit, real whipped cream, and best of all some lemon currant scones that stole the show. We interrogated one of the owners at length about how he got them to be so tender (apparently the key is how he whips the butter) and successfully begged them to pack us a few more for the road. The owners, Clif and Larry, are both impossibly friendly and fascinating to talk to, and their dog Basel (Basil?) is a sweet thing with a grass allergy. The only two things that were less than perfect were 1, that it was hard to enjoy the aforementioned patios and outdoor spaces in light of the overwhelming number of mosquitos, and 2, that the water from the taps and shower had the faint odor of sulfur. Neither is their fault (I assume the sulfur is the result of well water or somesuch), and in any case, these imperfections were overwhelmed by the scone.

The bed was incredibly comfortable, everything was spotless, and the decor is full of personality and details you will never get tired of discovering. Mostly, though, it was just relaxing. I spent a lot of time just hanging out doing nothing but listening to the woods around me. As a lifelong New Yorker, it was the exact opposite of my daily life, and exactly what I needed. Breakfast is where Duane really shines. He is the heart and soul of Grünberg Haus and a true culinary genius. Every morning he cooked something different and every single one was a winner: egg, ham, and cheese; pancakes and eggs; breakfast tacos. And that yogurt and berry parfait... I'm still dreaming about it. The inn itself is gorgeous, decked out with great pop culture posters and all kinds of fun finds. My friends and I spent evenings hanging out in the cozy living room with a few drinks, and it was a blast. We loved the historic town of Waitsfield. Sugarbush is only 15 minutes away. Another day we had a lovely drive to the Van Trapp resort where we cross country skied. The grounds are a small working farm - although we visited in early spring, so not much to see there. The inn has the quirky charm of a house that has probably seen many lives. The lounge areas have creaky wooden floors and other original features. The decor is a mix of farmhouse antiques balanced with more recent comfortable pieces. We had the "Love" room which had a giant bathroom with a jacuzzi bath/shower and a comfortable bed with and antique iron bed frame. The room was clean. The breakfast was made to order (eggs, omelettes, pancakes, yogurt or grain bowl) and enjoyed in a spacious dining room that also had self-service tea and cookies most of the day. The hosts are very accommodating. There is a network of trails accessible from the parking lot. Overall a great Vermont experience and a good value.
