In the area for work. While browsing yelp for a tasty place drove past this and looked it up. Compared to everything else it stood out from the rest. From my experience it did! This is only the 3rd time that I have eaten here and they do not disappoint. The chef is always wearing gloves and a hairnet and cooking the most flavorful breakfasts. I had the Steak and Egg sandwich which was served on a grilled Kaiser Roll along with their famous Hashbrowns. The bathrooms are cleaner than the restaurant. Listen, I don't expect much ambience when I visit Clare restaurants, let alone when I visit them at 2 a.m. after the bar. Going in, I knew the Whitehouse was a dive. Which is fine. I love diners, I love dive bars. This place was just disgusting. My chili dog was frozen, so was the chili. The grill looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the IGA was still around and my french fries were soggier than the buns, which may have been soaked in grease. The tables were not clean, the floor was not clean and after visiting there I did not feel clean. I should have driven to Mt. Pleasant instead and gone to White Castle. Do they even have a White Castle? I should have driven anywhere to eat anything but the food at Whitehouse. Next time I will try the Doherty. read more

I had a great experience at Whitehouse restaurant. I recently was in town for a archery competition and their breakfast gave me the energy I needed to compete and place 2nd in the tournament! I'm leaving 4 stars rather than 5 because the hash browns were a tad dry and I believe had they had a little moisture I would have placed first! This is a destination restaurant. There is a certain little show that takes place when you go there. The show is watching the cook make your meal and everyone else's. Then there is the interaction between you, the staff, and everyone else there. The place is tiny so even though you are sitting in your own booth, it feels like you are eating with everyone. We have been there dozens of times and have only had one bad meal and I think it was because the guy who was doing the cooking was out of rhythm with the show. My husband and I were looking for some place unique to Clare and this was the perfect place. I got the philly cheeseburger and it was amazing. Burger done just right with onions, green peppers, cheese, and cool cream cheese. My husband got double bacon cheeseburger and it was just as tasty. We opted for dessert. Food was excellent! Burgers cooked to perfection on a flat top. Custom orders, not a problem. Service was fast and very friendly. Made us feel like one of the locals. The entire building and furnishings, lets you know this place has been around a while. Thats why only 4 stars - the benches in the booths are very hard after just a few minutes. Fresh food cooked right in front of you. Staff was friendly. Menu is big compared to the size of this little - 6 table diner. I ordered the double bacon cheese burger with a drink and onion rings for a bill of $11.10. Fair prices and everything cooked for each order as it went to the cook station. Perfect local "greasy spoon" dive burger joint. The place is very small, having only six booths. But the food is fantastic and the prices are excellent. Good, friendly service with a smile. I had the mushroom-swiss burger with a side of onion rings, it was awesome. Only downside is there is no restroom. Otherwise, when you're done with lunch at the Whitehouse, check out the "Cops & Doughnuts" bakery just up the street. read more

Amazing cheeseburger! We stopped here on our way up to Mackinac Island. I had seen the reviews here on Yelp and had to try it. Being a lover of little dive restaurants this looked like an awesome find when we first arrived. Very small, and cold in the winter due to people taking their time coming in and looking around a the 7 or so booths that make up the entire place. 1 waitress and 1 cook working is a recipe for slow service indeed. Food is literally made 1 plate at a time. Menu is very large and I think this slows the cook up quite a bit - he kept having to go in the back refrigerator and/or freezer to get specialty items. When our food finally came it was hot, cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious! We'll probably be back in the summer with hope that more wait staff is added due to additional outside seating. read more

My husband and I were in there again this afternoon to eat. We live in Detroit but we have a home in Baldwin, MI that we go to on the weekends. We love everything about the Whitehouse and don't want anything to change. We had cheeseburgers and they were great . The beef was tender and cooked just right and the toppings were fresh. I also enjoyed the crisp fries. The catsup was in these huge squeeze bottles that had been sitting out all day .. I guess that normal but you always wonder if that's healthy .. the service was good . Perfect "dive" restaurant. First thing you see is the six tiny booths with the grill right next you. I was shocked when the first special I read was a spinach and feta omelet. I ended up ordering a double bacon cheese burger with havarti jalapeno cheese, who would have expected that out of hike in the wall restaurant. This is my favorite place to eat in the Central MI area. The food is consistently amazing with fresh locally raised/made ingredients and they have live music outside in the summer.
