I love the Georgia Conservancy. It's a member based environmental group that advocates and educates…read moreto protect Georgia's natural environments i.e. parks, rivers, and coastal areas. They also deal with water and land conservation. The main reason I love it though is for the trips they offer throughout the year. Some of them are service trips where you do trail cleanup, and others are just to show people Georgia's natural beauty and to educate people on why this or that area is an important resource for the citizens. Last year I did a service trip to Cumberland Island. We left Atlanta early Friday morning. Some people in our group camped out, while others stayed in dorms located in the staff area of Cumberland. On Saturday we spent all day clearing trails and cleaning the coastline. That night we drank some beer and had an oyster roast and low country boil. I met loads of interesting individuals who I would normally not come in contact with. Very nice. We also got considerable free time to wander the island and beach. I love the aspect of volunteering as well as being somewhere that is normally either off limits or hard to get too. The other great thing is that I want to be more outdoorsy. Here I can be outdoorsy and camp, but not be completely cut off from things. I'm also surrounded by people who have camped plenty of times and can show me the ropes. The next trip I'm going on is this weekend where I will be hiking, camping, and canoeing all weekend in the Okefenokee Swamp. I can't wait! There are lots of canoing/camping trips that the conservancy leads on the weekends. As a matter of fact there is a kayaking and camping trip on Sapelo Island at the end of January and a two day canoeing and camping trip down the flint river in March. Check the conservancy out...they are a fantastic organization with a great message and they lead really fun trips for people who are or want to be outdoors and experiencing all that Georgia has to offer.

It's very easy to inflate and carry down to the river and you can reuse time and time again. If you go this route, it's best to go with another party that can park at the finish spot so you have a ride back to your car when you're all done. The water is pretty calm. It can be a little chilly at first, but you get used to it eventually. I like to bring a paddle with me so I can better control my float. The whole trip takes about 3 hours to enjoy. So bring some friends, pack some drinks and snacks, and enjoy a lazy afternoon on the river.

One staff member said they stopped doing walk ins, however they changed their mind so we got lucky.. they charge for the tube which was $22, a "convenience fee," and shuttle charge for $4 a person. And if you want a square cooler tube it was $10. It was a kind of an unprofessional environment with young adults working the table to take in our payments. You have to leave one ID of the whole group you're with for security reasons I'm assuming, but you get it back at the end. Now, we got our tubes and life jackets and off to the Chattahoochee we go! The water was freezing cold even though it was a hot 90° outside. The thing that sucked most was my tube I was in, was already starting to deflate, along with another tube deflating slowly as well. That's wonderful.. There was an accident that happened on the ride down the river. My boyfriend had a shoulder injury previously, and somehow his shoulder dislocated while trying to push off a pier to get us away from the side.. well that was unexpected. It was tough to even get him out of the river and we didn't finish until after 6pm almost 7 by the time I went to grab my ID. And on my way towards the shuttle, not only did it stopped at 6, I wasn't even told they stopped running by that time. So the only option was to take a 5 minute lyft/Uber or walk 30+ minutes back to the starting point where the car is parked.

We went here on a Saturday when the weather looked like it was going to hold up, but Georgia weather could be unpredictable and it started pouring cold rain in the middle of our two hour session. The staff told us that we cannot get our money back for the additional time we didn't use, and we also could not get a credit to use for another time. I wasn't very pleased with that, because we cannot predict the weather, and we also cannot allow ourselves to get rained on with cold rain and risk getting sick. So we really had no other option, except to forfeit the additional hour and lose our money.
