My husband Christopher experienced many emotional breakdowns due to his lower left leg being amputated after the doctors amputated 3-4 toes. As his wife of 20 years, my boldness, directness, love for him and our family, and having gone through this with his parents, I was prepared for the challenges ahead. I sp;ent almost a year in every hospital and a few snifs (skilled nursing facility) in the greater Sacramento area back in 2017 due to a drunk driver that ran a red light and hit me head on, on my motorcycle. Now these nursing facilities vary in their level of cleanliness as well as their effectiveness in their duties serving their clientele. Some seem to cater to the elderly, while lacking the ability to serve those in need of true rehabilitation (learning to walk again after physical trauma or stroke event). While no one place can truly do it all, the staff at Whitney Oaks is caring and knowledgeable in their duties. From the attention the patients get around the clock from every nurse, CNA, and orderly on duty, to the administration there to assist you and your family navigate the overwhelming financial process that always rears its ugly head. Insurance, Medicare-Medical, Veteran's Administration as well. Ive been able to sit in on a few Physical Therapy sessions with my father and have had the pleasure, and always educational, chats with some of the residents attending their daily P.T. sessions. Seeing the care these folks get and the progress they make to enter the next phase of their lives is really inspiring. I happened to have made a full recovery from my ordeal, despite being an amputee i have learned to walk again and its all due to those who cared enough to assist me. I can honestly say it would have been a much easier ordeal had I been admitted to Whitney Oaks. Abe Olsen has given his personal time and attention to my entire family when needed showing us that he really cares about those under his care and direction. Not just those assigned to rooms in his halls, but every ones families, both patient and staff, creating a supportive welcoming atmosphere needed to get through these challenging times. Id like to give mention by name, some of the staff that have made my whole family feel like we were as close to home as could be the countless hours we spent giving my dad the support he needs to get back home caring for himself and living the best life he possibly can. This is a family friend that we recently went to visit. She was placed in a broken bed that did not sit up... despite the fact that their own evaluation stated that she needed to be upright 90 degrees for ALL INTAKE. And were having her "eat" laying down. The wheel chair has an unknown stinky brown substance that one could surmise was fecal matter. And these are her fingernails. Copious dried fecal matter. This is how we found her. And the staff was angry when we asked for her to be up in her chair to eat (after asking for it to be disinfected). We asked for a working bed and they provided supplies to clean her hands, but did not help. This is a horrible place with staff with frightening attitudes. Do not trust the doctors at Whitney Oaks. They will lie straight to your face. They put my Mom in Hospice. I asked them not to kill her and the doctor laughed at me. She was dead about 4 hours latter. My Mom had a bed soar. But they did nothing to fix it. Killing her was easier for them than dealing with her. read more

My husband John was recently discharged from Whitney Oaks, transferred there from Mather Sacramento VA Hospital. He was receiving Physical Therapy Rehabilitation for weeks. The Nursing staff of RN's, LVN's and CNA's were giving him quality care 100% of the time for day shift. He did have issues of extended wait times during night shifts or not fulfilling requests. The Social Services Department was terrific with a variety of assistance given from Kelli, Zebedee and Ronke. Their knowledge, compassion and level of care for the patients was excellent. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and individual patient rooms. We were also pleased with the daily meals served which my husband loved. I just received an email from Yelp.com that a complaint has been lodged for a post I wrote last December 24, 2023. In this post, I reported what appeared to be a brazen attempt to steal a laptop from a dear friend. The details I reported in that post are all true, co-witnessed by my partner, Veanna, who was with me during the episode. The details of what we reported are factual. We also filed an official report with the person who was in charge of the facility that day, but I do not remember her name. In this official report, we detailed what transpired, just as we have reported in our post of 12/24/23. We won't retract any of this. What is suspicious, is that the staff member involved actually lied to my face and said she was the one who gave my friend the laptop in question. I kept the laptop and took it home, but I told Karen to have her friend call me and I would return the laptop to her. A few days later her friend did call and I brought the laptop to her. So why the lie by the person in question that she gave the laptop to Karan? Suspicious. It was just totally inappropriate the way this staff person grabbed the laptop out of Karan's hands, and Karen in rage screamed that it was her laptop. When the laptop was opened, an account was already in Karan's name, and she had the password that opened the laptop. So it's not possible it was the property of the facility. Not at all the way this should have been handled. So, I will not retract the details - but, was it a theft attempt by this staff person? I will concede that I may be wrong. Whitney Oaks has been a blessing to my 80-year old mother who is suffering from many health issues (obesity, diabetes, congestive heart failure, pacemaker, immobility) that have increased over the past few years. My husband and I who look over mom always feel welcome the moment we step in.. from the front desk, CNA's, Nurses, Therapist , even the Maintenance staff. This has really been a "lifesaver" for all of us to give us peace of mind that she's being cared for safe. I had a 76 year old friend go in there after a stroke,not an expert on how these care facilities work but I would consider Whitney as descent at best ,guy at nurse station was horrible and communication was terrible,only bright light was zeb in social services she was fantastic!!!!supper helpful and knowledgeable about everything it takes to help someone you care about,went there almost everyday for over a month and she seems to be the only one in the whole place that had any idea about what was going on definitely would give her 5stars thanks zeb for your all your help!!! I would never allow one of my family members or friends to EVER go to Whitney Oaks again. Kelly is very sweet and deserves 5 stars but everything else about the place deserves zero stars. Try getting someone to answer their main line to ask a question or get in touch with your loved one, that is your first challenge. Their discharge planner, Dbullied my family trying to place my father in-law in two different dumpy board and care homes. Actually a ZERO ! My sister has been there for a week and I understand now why the rating are so low! There is no assistance for the patients that really need it ! Besides being fed there is no one checking on ANY OF THESE PATIENTS! 1 week of my sister being there and she's had no shower! She's on oxygen to stay alive & not in the hours at a time, that I have been there, has anyone checked on her! I have advise them because she keeps taking it off . She's a fail risk and I catch her Walking to the bathroom BY HERSELF! Her room mate tells me, she's up goin to the restroom by herself, at night! That's Unacceptable!!!! We placed my brother in this facility to recuperate and rehabilitate after a life altering surgery. I did a walk through of the facility, peaked at the rooms to see if patients were being properly cared for and really scrutinized the staff and care. This was an A+ for me. My brother received white glove service, tender care and attention to all of his needs. This was a relief for me knowing whether I was there or not, he was being well taken care of. After some time and my brother was able to communicate he thanked me profusely for choosing Whitney Oaks. I intern thanked the nurses and caretakers for their expertise, rehabilitation therapies and care for my brother. Thank you so much Whitney Oaks. First thing that i noticed are the employees of the facility are very friendly, i always feel welcome the moment you step in. from the patient itself, receptionist, CNA, Nurses, Therapist , even the Maintenance staff. DON and Administrator are very approachable and friendly. i come 5 days a week to visit my clients but i never feel that im not part of the team. Also i noticed that staff kept their facility be look nice , organize and clean. I will definitely recommend Whitney oaks outside the community to let their friends and facility to stay at this facility. read more

We recently had a patient, a much loved veteran very important to our entire family, in this facility for stroke recovery for over 2 months. We had a rather bad experience. Communications with them are very difficult at this time and I attribute this in part to the corona virus pandemic, but their phone system is terrible, and they are clearly understaffed. They have only two phones for many dozens of patients. It's ridiculous and often you can't get the patient for days on end. These are brave people with tough jobs that work in facilities of this type and most of them try, it seemed to me. It's true that their toilet or hygiene program is dreadful. That nobody can get in to see what goes on makes it worse but we were able to face time with him and could see what was (and wasn't) going on there. They made one terrible mistake with laxatives. The sad tendency they seem to have in ignoring written requests for information, as well as ignoring some calls, should also be very concerning. They also let him fall down 5 times the first week and a half he was there, and gave him a drug that knocked him out, so that he did not benefit from his two weeks of rehab., or even participate most of the time. Amazingly our loved one mostly liked the food there, though normally a fussy eater, and most of the staff, though not generally uncritical of people he meets. I have felt the rehab and other phys therapy had been lacking, but there is a wide range of doctors at their disposal and we're getting copies of bills from them by the dozens now. He did not get nearly enough therapy and was deteriorating, and we got him out as soon as we possibly could. It is difficult to listen to all the cries of NURSE NURSE, and HELP that go unanswered and pushing the button for help is a joke. They lost most of his clothes and many other items, though we finally got his glasses back weeks after he got out. Until they solve their communication and staffing problems I wouldn't use them. read more

Horrible care!! My dad is 92 and suffered a stroke that has left him blind. Myself and 3 siblings take turns being there as much as we can. He's in a room with two other gentlemen, and they all hate it. Nobody comes when they hit the call button! I went to help him with his lunch the other day, and he was in the dining room with no one helping him with his food. Did I mention he's blind! I found out today that he crawled last night to the nurses' station last night and again, this morning. That's because no one is checking on them on a regular basis. Many times, I've gone to get a nurse, and they've been on their phones! Not care related. This place should be shut down. It's criminal. I have many more examples to. My 90 year old mother was here for 5 days following femur surgery. She is legally blind, has COPD, and leukemia. She was supposed to be at Whitney Oaks for longer, but she developed an infection that turned septic. Prior to this diagnosis she had shortness of breath and a high pulse on day 5. They took a urine sample that morning and called the doctor. The doctor asked for a chest X-ray and more labs. The facility contracts out for this. Four hours later, the first urine sample was still there with no X-ray machine in sight, or lab tech to do blood work. My mother was declining. We kept checking with staff and asking for the doctor. Finally the doctor showed up and decided to send my mom to Kaiser ER. The was over 6 hours after the original concern. As soon as the medics hooked her up to their machines they detected AFIB. The ER doctor was amazing. My mom stayed at Kaiser for 3 days and is no being released to and Eskaton skilled nursing facility. So much cleaner. The photos on Yelp do not look like the facility in person. There are no cheerful flowers out front. Nothing visually stimulating there at all. If you take you loved one outside and around back, there is trash piled up with broken furniture and wheelchairs and cardboard. They rooms are dark and dingy. I've stayed in a Motel 6 nicer than this place. The food here was disgusting. The first day my mom was given a piece of cheese pizza with a pineapple ring and iceberg lettuce for a salad and lemon drink. I saw fish sticks and rice pilaf one day, and beef stroganoff with broccoli steaks another day. The cook opens cans and heats food. We asked for an Ensure for three days and never got one. If you have a loved one here make sure they get all their meds. They missed my moms Spiriva to mornings in a row. She needs this to breathe. The hallways are loud from staff and other patients. read more

Whitney Oaks in Carmichael, Ca is the worst facility you can trust to take care of your loved ones. My Grandmother was in this facility for a month and experienced the worst abuse by the nurses/staff members. My Grandmother described being slapped by the black nurses/staff members and being left naked for hours in her room with a roommate that would scream all day/night and also being denied access to basic necessities (i.e. WATER!) Who knows what else happens here behind our backs! No one believed my Grandmother until we were forced to bring her home only to find out there was evidence of a fungus and raw skin (in her private areas) from not being properly treated. My family was only about to visit once a week because of the distance. (weekends) Same dirty sheets from the week prior! Surprise! That would explain why she has a fungus and thank you Whitney Oaks because now she's antibiotics! If you're looking for a facility for your "loved one" DO NOT SEND THEM TO WHITNEY OAKS! ALSO! We brought our loved one here for physical therapy several days ago. He has nothing but good things to say about the the physical therapists. He also raves about the staff that works days on the 300 hall. I myself witnessed much kindness during the day. He said the nights are a different matter. With few exceptions he said they do not answer if you need something for almost an hour and they are extremely unpleasant when they do. After a couple days, he is wishing he could go to another facility where they had people who wanted to help patients at night. Another resident agreed the night staff is very unpleasant but explained they are short staffed, and offer hire temps. That should not matter!!!! There are zero stars for this dump. They make it look nice on the outside. Believe me it's not nice. Incompetent staff. My husband needed wound care 2 times a day. He was lucky to get it once every couple of days. He almost lost his leg to infection. He had an amputation on his right foot and another surgery on the same leg. My mom came here after having surgery. She stayed for two weeks. They only gave her one shower after we made them even though the doctors orders said that she needed to have at least 3 showers a week to clean her incision area. They did not give her any wound care on the weekends allowing her incision to get infected. When she would ask the CNA's for pain medicine or nausea medicine they wouldn't let the nurse know so my mom would have to sit in pain and ask several times. There is no communication between departments. Even the night she arrived the intake was not very welcoming. We chose this place because it had such good reviews. I want people to know if your loved one needs wound care they will not get better here!!! read more

Under no circumstances should you allow a loved one to be admitted here. My 91yo reasonably healthy father-in-law was admitted for rehab after a surgical procedure for stomach ulcers. After ten days he couldn't go home because he had an elevated white blood cell count. Two weeks later I talked to Dr. Bhutani about his condition. She said he still had an elevated white blood cell count. I asked if he was getting antibiotics. She said no because he didn't have a kidney infection. I asked if he had an infection somewhere else, otherwise why would he have a high white blood cell count? She repeated he didn't have a kidney infection. My father-in-law went into septic shock because Dr. Bhutani refused to administer even a prophylactic dose of antibiotics. AND now my father-in-law is in an ICU with his DNR on the top of his chart. read more

Really disappointed with this facility and how it is managed. We have a loved one in this facility and communication is awful. We have called and left messages for management numerous times with no pickup or return calls. We've also seen them ignore CDC guidelines regarding COVID protocols. My 83 yr old mother was transferred here for physical therapy. - the service she really didn't receive! She had hip surgery. NOT REPLACEMENT. After being there several weeks she was still bed ridden. Her grandson refused to pick her up. I was given 3 days notice that Kaiser would no longer pay for her care. I live in IN & not part of her discharge planning. I was told before my arrival that she could walk 20 ft. When I arrived, she was in a wheelchair& couldn't stand. I told them I was STILL planning on taking her with me to Chicago. The following day I arrived with my own wheelchair and granddaughter and was forced to sign her out AMA. I was given 4 days worth of medication. I ASKED FOR 30 DAYS. No physician will accept a new patient in such a short period of time. Whitney Oaks wanted my family to pay them $15,000 a month for care that didn't produce results. After leaving Whitney Oaks ; within one week the change was dramatic! To say her life was saved, maybe not, she has her own stories about roommates that cry out. The ones nobody visits. She also said she really cared about some of the people. But quality of care is that, quality of care. read more

Please do not choose this place for your loved one! If I had time to really research these facilities I would have never allowed her to go here. As of 5/31 they have the HIGHEST COVID OUTBREAK of all of Sacramento!! They are 11 up and counting and that includes my mother. They are completely ignoring covid protocol! When I went to visit my mother they had me gear up, advising that there was an outbreak. What they neglected to tell me was that it was one of the women in my mother's room!!! I had to find out from someone who was not an employee that my mother had been sitting in a fully covid contaminated room for THREE DAYS before they even thought to move her. Then I had to ask them to test her as she was suppose to move soon and I didn't want her to bring covid to another care center. Now she has been extended another 7 to 10 days for their neglect. I am livid. This is barely the tip of what has been going on here and Kaiser is no better in this case then Whitney Oaks is! Seems Kaiser does not let stroke patients stay at rehab facilities for more than 14 days! I can promised come tomorrow morning Kaiser will be dropped like a hot potato! I thought so much better than this of Kaiser! My mother is normally treated far better than this, seems when a person strokes the care is ignored and they were more focused on whether or not I was going to place a DNR on her than what they were going to do to care for her. Whitney Oaks was suppose to do 5 days a week therapy and since, a woman with no ability to think for herself now, continued to say no, they didn't do therapy. Now it is not that part that angers me, it is the fact that they didn't call me and tell me this is what she was doing so I could come in and assist in getting her to her therapy! NOT ONE CALL. Then on the same day I found out she was not doing therapy, they tell me she is not eating either!! Nothing, they have been giving her ensure and vitamins but otherwise she had not eaten for 9 days of being there! Again NO CALL! I was suppose to get a Care Conference so we can go over her care and figure out her future options, didn't get that at all. They said that Julie was the case manager and she was suppose to call and advise and help with her placement, NOTHING! Then I get a phone call on the 24th advising that she is being discharged on Monday, a holiday by the way, and that they have a place for her to go and her equipment ordered. When I advised no one has called me about that at all so I can check out the facility, she said Julie from Social Sevices should call me that day or the next to advise. NOTHING! NOT ONE CALL from Joy the SS director or Julie the Case Manager! Then this lady calls me the next day to advise they don't have a place for her but if I file for Medi-Cal and they figure out what the share of cost is she can remain there with them! Which in turn I advised why on earth, if I did that, that they think I would've let her stay there? Mind you I now have 2 days to find someplace for my mother because of the holiday. To then be proceeded by facilities cannot take her on a holiday. When I asked to get it extended to Tuesday she advises if your mom has to stay another day it will be $385.00 as the insurance will not cover another day unless the doctor okays it (ummm..... I don't know, ASK THE DOCTOR???) I MEAN SERIOUSLY, I have to think for them!! I have been absolutely rail roaded by these people from day one! They intentionally feed you small bits of information to trap you in to no choices and little time for placement! Then nickel and dime you for other services just to get her out of there or moved. And don't get me started on the distance caps of 50 miles!!! That is a whole other story that makes me see red!!! read more

If I could give negative stars, I'd give a billion. I have so many negatives I can say but that would take forever. My dad suffered so much at the hands of this facility. The only thing worse was Kaiser. They tried to give my dad- who is dieing of cancer-physical therapy. CNA held his catheter bag over his head. CNA got angry because he wanted ice in his water.... So much more. We couldn't get him out of there fast enough. They wanted to keep him after 12 so they could get paid for another day. Please- do not ever let your sick loved one to be sent there by Kaiser. The social worker is unqualified and overworked. . Kaiser is great if your healthy and has great hospice team because you are incurable and resigned to die comfortably- Kaiser is more than willing to help ya do that--- but if you're sick--- they will try to kill you faster by sending you to Whitney oaks unskilled nursing facility! Run from this facility with your loved one on your back if your have to. read more

I am giving them 2 stars because there were some employees - nurses, nursing assistants, etc. - that were quite helpful and kind. Overall, this was a very bad experience. I understand that Covid makes everything more difficult, but very little went well. Our loved one survived the stay there, which is a good thing. We had trouble reaching his care team and getting updates on his condition. Although I believe this next is a Kaiser issue, before we ever got an update on his condition, they called a video meeting to discuss palliative care WITH the disoriented patient present in the conversation which basically asked him if he wanted to be resuscitated should his condition worsen, and left us with the impression we should give up on him getting any better. BEFORE WE EVEN HAD A FIRST UPDATE ON HIS CONDITION! I brought a cell phone for him to use to call his family, with which he needed help, and which I asked several people to help him call out, and although he was there for 4 weeks that NEVER happened. After one week there our relative contracted Covid and was moved to the "Red Zone". So even less contact than before. Fortunately he never developed symptoms, which was just a miracle. His overall care seemed adequate. However several times I called the facility for up to 30 minutes at a time, and there was no answer. NO ANSWER! How is that possible?! And the person that was normally at the reception desk was abrupt and not terribly helpful or sympathetic when you did get to talk to someone. I will absolutely never allow a family member to use this facility again. And I recommend you find somewhere else for your loved one to rehab. read more

My grandmother stayed here for a little under a week. We had to get her out as soon as possible because this place was so awful. They do not control the temperature and she was roasting the entire stay. They also allowed her roommate full dictation of the TV, so my grandmother was not able to watch a single program. Communication is horrible! We brought my mother here To recover from a broken hip. She Arrived approximately 7 o'clock that evening.. I Started calling at 8:00 a.m.. 3 different people were supposed to call me back none dead. This is common for this place. This run around went on until about 11::30 a.m. at 12:15 I was informed by Kaiser and not the facility that my mother was back in ER with breathing problems ! They did not even contact my father I had to tell him, and he is also a patient at that same facility they literally had to walk down Upon arriving at ER they Drained one ivy bag of fluid off of her lungs. Her body was not expelling liquid at the ER they gave her medication she immediately filled a urine container. She is now on her way to hospice. Had they checked my mother and her breathing issues this would not have happened. We started to investigate I will enclose some pictures will give you an idea of the conditions your loved ones would be in. My 85 year old Mother came here in July to recuperate after a one week stay in the emergency room at Sutter Memorial Hospital. She went to the ER for kidney failure as a result of a medication related issue. I also do not understand some of the other negative comments because my Mom received excellent round the clock care and physical therapy to get her back on her feet again. She bounced back to her normal self in about a week and was discharged from Whitney Oaks well enough to return to her regular board and care home. Worst experience EVER for my sister at a rehabilitation center. She is disabled and went to Whitney Oaks for three weeks of physical therapy after a hospital stay. She lives independently and her ability to transfer between her wheel chair and bed to use the restroom is critical for her to continue living this way. Her stay at Whitney Oaks was meant to build her strength back up. After three weeks at Whitney Oaks, she was worse off and weaker than when she went in, and we had to transfer her to another facility to get the physical therapy she needs. Whitney Oaks said they offer physical therapy between 9am-1pm, Monday-Friday. On two of Mondays while my sister was there, Physical Therapy did not show up, and did not make up the missed sessions on other days. Staff seemed short-handed and slow answer call lights. Several times my wife and I called the main phone number to Whitney Oaks and no one answered, and we were not switched to voice mail; the phone just kept ringing until we gave up or were disconnected. My sister will not go to Whitney Oaks ever again. We believe that her stay there did her more harm than good. read more

This was not a good place for my mother. My very healthy mom fell and broke her wrist and knee. After staying in the hospital one day she was moved to this facility. Although her two nurses did a good job of caring for her, the rest of the experience was awful. The dramatic decline was heartbreaking. She felt unimportant and neglected. I know they are understaffed, but she was not given the care she deserved. Also, their procedures and protocols changed daily and without notice. Very unhappy. read more

VETERANS BEWARE! My father was discharged from this facility a few days ago and was recovering from amputation surgery. Any veteran can tell you that war was awful to go through, but this facility, and the treatment my elderly father received was far from anything he or any non veterans there deserved. He wept so loudly in absolute relief that my mother was there to pick him up and take him far far away! His account for his time spent there was more damaging then it was productive. He recalled moments where he had soiled himself and had requested a nurse and kept pressing his call button and yet no one came. My father was left helplessly waiting aid while soiled. Does is sound like respectful and humane treatment of patients and or veterans for that matter? No it does not! To make matters worse my father who at the time he was admitted wasn't able to wash himself and the staff neglected to wipe him down and clean him up with a sponge bath. Although he requested it multiple times to his nurse aid nothing was done about it. Despicable ! These nurses that handled my father were negectful and careless. He then said that when he was able at some point to go use the restroom he was being wiped with paper towels! There really isn't a way around that because my father had what appeared to be a diaper rash and blisters/sores. You don't get that just by one time use or a few minutes sitting with excrements on your rear. He also describes how he was not the only one that was requesting help and help did not come. There were others there that would be screaming from there rooms for help as well especially at night and help did not come. I did manage to speak with someone at the facility regarding these concerns however I do not believe any real consequences are being implemented to reprimand the staff that were responsible for the carelessness and neglect that was exhibited. It was more so conveyed to me that when these issues were brought up then they fixed it (i.e. Giving him a roll of toilet paper) and moved on. There's much more deep rooted issues at hand rather than something simple as giving toilet tissue. Where is the quality control? Who is responsible for checking patients rooms for adequate supplies? Who is responsible to assure the staff is operating at standards that is set fourth by management? Is management hands on? Is there any consequences? How was something as simple as toilet paper missed? Wasn't there someone there to check on him at least once a day? My father is a Purple Heart recipient, a veteran who at age 19 was plucked from his home and dropped in the middle of Vietnam. He was a POW for 40+ days and now at almost 69 years old he enters into this care facility not by choice but by necessity and his morale is completely crushed. He shudders at the sight of a hospital bed recounting his time at Whitney Oaks. Unfortunately, because of his condition he must stay in his hospital bed even at home. Each side will have their own account to the "facts", but the case still remains that NO ONE should deserve this kind of treatment. I hope future patients do not and will not ever have to worry that they will be mistreated. To ensure that this does not happen again, I have already made movements to contact every state agency to assure that this facility and its workers follow proper protocol. To be sure that someone other than its own board of directors is putting pressure on these care facilitators to do their job for the enrichment of the patient and not greed for a paycheck. If it turns out that they are following protocol that is good for them and the rest of the patients, but as for the care my father received it is too late to turn back time to re-correct any wrongdoings. Moving forward, I encourage those with family members thinking of placing their loved one here to reconsider for the moment being and allow the Whitney Oaks staff to revamp themselves and flush out the staff that are not on board with quality care. read more
