I was super early to the yelpies 2025 event at King Richard's antique store so to pass by time, I decided to walk this trail for about an hour to get my steps in. The sun already set and it's dark but I still check out a short part of this trail and other people were on this trail as well, walking, jogging, biking, walking their dogs so it was dark but it was not scary! I got about 2 miles in and was satisfied with my walk before the event began. The trail was clean and I did not see any trash. read more

I've been training for my half marathon and this is a great trail to run! It is relatively flat with pretty views here and there. As most people have mentioned, I did see some homeless people while running. Overall, I felt very safe and it was one of the most enjoyable runs I've had in awhile. I parked at Parnell Park and ran a total of 8 miles. The trail is directly across from the park. I can't wait to come here again for more runs! read more

The Whittier Greenway Trail, Whittier, CA 90603 Nice flat walk that's about 5 miles long. Bike and dog friendly. It's a flat straight away pavement walk way with bike trails along the sides but keep in mind there are several cross lights you have to walk thru. There is Plenty of shade, but be aware, there are several homeless people along the path and a few in the bushes as well. If you're bringing your dog, make sure to bring a waist bag because a few times that I've been here the containers they have along the walks were empty. Overall it's a nice quick easy walk. read more

I frequent the Greenway Trail and enjoy coming here with my dog. It's great for walking, biking, or running or just to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The landscaping is beautiful and always appears to be well maintained with amazing trees. I love the nature vibe especially when coming across friendly inhabitants. They also have an exercise area, display ogle miniatures history homes, and quad structure. This has to be one of the most beautiful trails I've been on, I'm glad it close to my house!! read more

We parked on Pioneer Blvd on the west end of the trail and there are no parking restrictions in the residential neighborhood. It's a popular flat trail used mostly by walkers with children. We did not like the constant stopping at street lights and the extremely rare and non existing benches and tables. We made a pit stop at Super Burrito and took our food to go hoping we could sit at a bench on the trail and enjoy the food and people watch, that didn't happen. read more

Excellent trail for an early morning or early afternoon walk, run, bike, scooter, pull wagons...whatever that will allow you to enjoy the scenic amazingness on the Whittier Trail. Along the trail, you'll come across lots of paved dirt paths, along with paths that displays a little history of the town. You can follow the trail and learn something new. Once you reach the "Four Points," which is the bridge that sits right above the main intersection of Whittier Blvd. and Pickering Blvd., that's a great spot to just take the beautiful scene. It's pretty right around sunset. There are some parts of the trail that can be sketchy. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be okay. I don't recommend going on this trail after dark, as there are little if no lighting in some areas. read more

This is a really nice bike path! I wish all cities have one, be connected with each other, and it could definitely be a way to go green as we use more bikes as as mode of transportation. Anyway, we connected to this via the San Gabriel bike path to make a longer ride-nice scenery and foliage and smooth road that is clean. Highly recommend this path! read more

Cute path that is street adjacent but still "private path" esque. I drive to this trail on the weekend because I can make my workout as long as I like. Since the trail is pretty lengthy (8 miles), I can walk or jog for over a couple of hours. The only sucky part are the street crossings and the people who are anti-maskers. Thankfully, the path is wide enough to avoid other people germs if that's also a goal. Ok. Time for an update. The pedestrian/bike crossing lights on the greenway trail on Scott and Cole and Roads are now fully functional. You can cross from trail end to trail end across these streets without having to go to Lamber to cross. The gates are still up but have been propped open by other user's. Landscaping is still ongoing in some sections and there is some need to trim some overhead limbs from trees over the walkways. Still doing some construction on the Santa Gertrude's side so that section may be a couple of months from being finished. Enjoy everyone!! read more

I totally forgot about this little trail! I went on it even while it was in the building stages, lol, I didn't know it wasn't open (duh). I stopped going while it opened and was extremely populated (although I imagine weekends during cooler times & weekdays after work being crowded) it's still not that bad, and you can customize it to your liking. Honestly, I prefer the longer distance in the direction towards East Whittier. (I don't know, but I heard a few rumors about the safety issues going towards Pioneer & if your familiar w/that area, it's always been sketchy). If your female and alone, just be careful, especially walking towards Palm Park. Anyways, mending my health, I can't really run and only do slow hiking or long distance walking. This meets my needs. I love how they keep up w/maintenance and the markers letting you now how many miles. I love how they have placed the gym equipment in certain spots, cool to see our community utilizing them for their health benefit. Also love t he little boards w/historical information of the area and John Greenleaf Whittier (as well as the maps of trail). It's great that our younger generation get an insight of what was past. Which is why our beloved city is still flourishing. On the flipside of that note, I hope to see it kept up, as I noticed spots of graffiti, litter and poop (really people? there are doggie bag dispensers throughout the entire trail, how lazy and inconsiderate ! The city will eventually cut back (for whatever reasons unforeseen) and it will be sad that some people can't be respectful of that. I've been to the flat trail in Manhattan Beach & can not even compare it; Apples & Oranges - (different area/different...well you know) :( Nice to see families & everyone enjoying it! With that said (here we go) please also be considerate of others and move aside when people on foot or bike are trying to pass by as I've seen the groups of people that walk together (I wish they had a emoji slapping it's head as to "Why?") That's just the sign of the times and quite frankly it's scary, It's still really nice to have that and from what I hear, will be extending it...Oh Yay! Can't wait for that. read more

What used to be an abandoned railroad track is now a nicely paved road for the entire community to enjoy. I drive by this trail every day, but I would only see certain sections of it from the main road. Little did I know that this trail stretches about 15 miles from Mills all the way to Hadleys. If you're planning on riding your bike and you don't live too far from the trail, I recommend making your way to the starting point by taking the dirt road. I had a lot of fun going over the rocks even with dust trailing behind my husband's bike and settling on me. Since it was our first time on the trail and we were unfamiliar with it, we used a cycling phone app called Strava to help us navigate. I love it because it's a leisurely ride for beginner cyclists like me. The trail is long so you get enough cardio, but it's mostly flat so it's not too challenging where you're left with no energy after a long day's work. I'm even hesitant to call it a trail because it's more like a path. I also like that it's clean and well-kept. Don't come alone though or late at night because bad people could easily hide in the bushes. What You'll See: -Families, friends, couples on their bikes -Lovers strolling -Historical landmarks with fun facts about the railroad track that it used to be -People jogging and walking or enjoying the company of their children or dogs -Workout stops with gym equipment -Front and back views of people's homes, commercial and industrial businesses -Beautiful trees and landscaping -The sunrise or sunset depending on when you go -Schools, churches and other typical elements that make up a community What You'll Smell: -Barbecue from residents grilling in their backyard -Nature What You'll Hear: -Cyclists zooming by old and young -People panting from their workouts -Hushed conversations -Laughter -Cars beeping their horns -Sirens from police cars and ambulances According to news websites, the city has approved expansion to this trail which will make it stretch all the way to Brea. That's exciting but it might take a few years before coming to fruition. The only downside is that the trail is not entirely connected. It's broken by the main roads, and you have to go through a lot of traffic lights and stop signs. On the bright side, this gives you the opportunity to rest for a few seconds or a minute before continuing on. You also have to dodge through a lot of people if you ride your bike at a busy time because the trail is quite narrow. Just make sure you follow all signs and ride safe at all times. Overall this trail made me feel incredibly happy and fulfilled and I can't wait to try it again. I was actually sad when it ended. Next time my husband and I plan to try it in the morning. It's a sweet little luxury to have a safe trail like this right in your own backyard and Whittier residents should be grateful for that. The best part for me was going over the bridge that crosses the intersection because of the picturesque view with the sun and palm trees in the background. read more

This trail is a beautiful one to walk, run, ride your bike, etc... I love coming here especially on mornings. It's so peaceful and you can really clear your head. It's never too packed so you get to really enjoy your walk. This trail goes on forever from Whittier. It's on Lambert. They have beautiful trees and plants throughout and a line separating both ways coming. There's also spots where you can stop at a little weight station. Any time you get to a light you do have to cross the street to continue walking the trail. There are no lights at night so I would make sure you come when it is daylight. I love to come with my little family to walk and my daughter ride her bike. It's a great trail to check out especially if you're in Whittier read more

Finally took my first stroll on the greenway trail. the trail runs right behind my house and I have procrastinated forever about taking a walk on it. Let me say that it is a great addtion to the community. What would have otherwise been an eyesore has been turned into something useful and beautiful. The trail is very clean and well kept. I just hope that in these trying times the city of Whittier can continue to support the trail and keep it in its current condition. Whittier Greenway Trail - Love my morning hike at Hellman trial in Whittier - Parks Near Me - Whittier, California

The greenway is a great use of land that the city of Whittier hijacked thanks to the party boys of Santa fe Rail. Here is the history/rumor minute. See the trail was an active shortcut spur by Santa Fe (now Burlington Northern) that had some light rail traffic between the busy line along the 605 fwy and the active line that goes from La Habra and south into Santa Fe Springs. What happened was the local Santa fe rail staff wanted to have a annual picnic during the summer to blow off steam. After a few years, a few of them came up with a idea of closing the spur down and roll in a flat car and have several bars and tons of booze on it right into the middle of palm park. As you can guess what happened when a bunch of railroad workers a booze get together. Cops rolled in and wanted to shut down the party and bust everyone for drinking in the park. Only problem was that all the booze was on the car - on Santa Fe Rail land that ran right through the park. Score Railroad workers 1, Cops 0 After years of the city denying a party permit to anyone associated with Santa Fe, a drop in traffic demand for the spur, and the buyout by Burlington Northern. Burlington sold the line to LA MTA as a potential and future line into the area. The land sat fallow until the city found some money to redo the land into a walk way from the 605 fwy to almost Parnell Park. I lived near and walked / ran / biked its 4 plus miles many times for exercise. If you are going to use it to work out it is ok for it is mostly flat and shaded. One of the great things is they have a dirt path on the side of the paved bike path. This is great for running for running on packed dirt is way better on your knees and feet then asphalt. It is kept clean and maintained. The highlight of the trail is crossing over the converted railroad bridge over the five points intersection and going thru palm park where you can stop to use the pool or have a great picinic However, once you want to travel beyond its ends, it gets very dangerous. On the 605 freeway end, the path stops on a residential street and you have to choose your death from there if you want to connect to the bike path along the River trail. You can go north to Beverly Blvd where there is no sidewalk, no bike path, no curb in parts, a narrow bridge to cross, potholes galore, and you also get to play frogger by cross a ramp to the 605fwy with the full traffic of Beverly Blvd. Or you can go south to Whittier Blvd it a little better, but there is also no bikepath, and you have to now cross three ramps to the 605 with full traffic of the blvd. great times every time I used it to go beyond the trail. On the other end, the trail dumps you off at Florence and Lambert. Lambert is the major street locals use to get to La Habra / Brea / La Mirada / East Whittier for fewer lights then Whittier Blvd. You are one block from Colima road, the major corridor over the Whittier hills. So after you get off the trail you have to dodge major traffic on Lambert for two miles with no bike path and parked cars before you get to parnell park. Fun for all. But overall it is a great trail to use to exercise when you stay within the boundaries. Finally for all the haters, you may get your wish now that MTA wants to extend the gold line into Whittier. So if you want to try it, you better do that now for it may be gone soon. read more

I love this trail even though I got runners knee for visiting too often. I am a morning person (don't stalk me, I'll shank you) and it's cool to see many of the same people during my morning jog. I usually do 4 miles but it's my goal to run the whole thing at some point. I've had one bad experience with some crazy yelling at us from under the bridge (where Whittier, Santa Fe Springs, and Washington meet) and there are dog owners that don't pick up their pets dooty, but overall, I think it's a great trail to run, walk, bike, etc. read more

We live near lambert and mills, so we started using the greenway trail to walk dogs and kids. The trail has doggie poop bags, which is why I am surprised why people don't pick up after their dogs. It has a pedestrian lane and bike lanes. We can easily walk to different parts of Whittier from trail. The trail is maintained clean and the vegetation/plants throughout trail require very little water. I like living in a city that provides healthy options for residents. I do think they could've done a better job connecting the trial at several intersections, but no big deal. read more

This is a great place to run for those who are looking for a woodsy and dirt (flat) trail escape without having to leave the comforts of suburbia. I've been running the entire length of the trail (approx 4 miles) several times during the week and it doesn't get old. There are two cute bridges nearing the first two miles of the trail that make for a nice incline and some good scenery (I usually start off backwards at mile 4). Not too much cyclist or foot traffic during the day - which is nice. read more

We live right over the Greenway Trail, so we use it quite a bit. It is a pretty trail, and I sure think it is an improvement over an abandoned railway trestle. My only complaint is that it crosses roads too many times. In most spots, you are supposed to get off your bike and walk up to the crosswalk on the corner. Needless to say, this can really slow you down. When I actually have to get somewhere in a hurry on my bike (eg Work) I usually have to ride in traffic on Lambert or Whitter because it is so much faster than the trail. I hope that some day MTA has the money to build more bridges and underpasses at the road crossings, it would really make the Greenway more practical for commuters. read more

This is an easy up and back trail. I read that the money that went into building it comes to 2.3 million per mile. It went into a wide asphalt path and a dirt trail next to it, fencing, and gorgeous landscaping. It's definitely the nicest landscaped path I've ever been on. At one point you cross a large bridge over a couple roads, which I'm sure took up a lot of that budget, and there are windmills lining it. Very special. It crosses close to a dozen roads which is a pain. For biking--it's annoying to have to keep stopping. However, traffic did yield to pedestrians and the lights all have pedestrian buttons to press. Lots of parking at the park and there's a parking lot mid trail as well. The park has bathrooms. read more

I grew up in Whittier and have always loved seeing how the plants grow from year to year. Believe it or not, this trail was once an abandoned rail road that you did not want to walk alone through past sun-up. In recent years, the city has installed a series of historical panels with incredible information about this history of Whittier and the surrounding area. Great place to go for a run, walk your dog, or take a walk with friends. If you're riding a bike to get from place to place, I'd recommend taking a detour to enjoy some of the plant life and history. I only wish there were more of it. More extension would always be welcome, but it would also be nice to find ways to connect it to the streets and make it more of a serious pedestrian thoroughfare.
