Top notch premium Carne Asada meat. Hands down the most tender, flavorful Asada that makes you say mmmm between each bite. It's so good I drove all the way from Whittier just to buy this stuff. The cost per pound at the time of this review was $11.99 but all great things come at a price. Be sure to have them marinade the meat before they bag it up. I also bought Chorizo which was a big hit, but the Asada is the big winner here. Note: You have to swing over three blocks to buy East L.A's freshest tortillas that go amazingly well with this type of meat. Tortilla place is called Miramar Tortilleria on Union Pacific Ave. You have to ask the owner for fresh tortillas and he'll go in the back to get you a freshly made bag for $3. It's decent flavor but not worth the 20min wait in line when I've produced better results using a marinade recipe of my own. Kudos on using citrus. Great tenderizer. Sodium's high though. Would appreciate less so that I can have better control over how salty my guest want there meat. The chicken.....avoid it. Very bland. Found this market through Yelp and since we were already in the area, we decided to stop and buy some meat based on the reviews. There was a line to enter and that was because of COVID-19 and practicing social distancing. We only waited about 15 minutes in line. But once you enter, you need pull a number for the carniceria, so another wait but the line went pretty fast. We ordered asada and chicken. Both were really delicious, tender and had great flavor. Based on other reviews, you must get there early especially on holidays or expect to wait an hour plus. One more recommendation, use mesquite when grilling and buy yellow corn tortillas. I've been coming here for 20 years. Service is great. They move the line quickly. They have plenty of employees when big crowds gather. Mostly on holidays. Prices are reasonable. But... quality O.M.G. The best anywhere. I most get Ranchera, Chicken and Riblets. But everything else looks great to. Store is well stocked on everything you need. I currently live in Riverside now. The location is in a little bit of a shaddy place to be. Its in the heart of East Los Angeles and please don't try and show up at night. If you do please bring someone with you that will defend you form the unknown peeps hanging around the hood. I grew up two blocks away from Whittier Market and I have never forgotten about the little meat shop with the best cuts in town. I mainly go for the Carne Asada which I ask them to marinate for me. Most average meat shops give you thick fatty cuts of carne asada but not here, Whittier Market has some of the thinnest, leanest cuts I have seen. I will be honest, when I don't want to make the trip from Norwalk to East LA, I will buy the meat somewhere else and marinate it myself but when I need to bring some to a BBQ and I don't feel like marinating ten pounds of meat or more, I go back to my old neighborhood. About the neighborhood, this market is in the heart of East LA but this shouldn't stop you from giving this market a try. If you really are worried of the area, come in the middle of the day and come down Whittier Blvd. Since I grew up in the area, I have no problem using the side streets but even if you do take Whittier Blvd, you are never any more than a few minutes away from the 5 or the 710. When you do make it to the market, you owe it to yourself to try the asada or the marinated pork chops. read more
