I went to this Whole Foods in River Forest a lot. With Whole Foods Market - River Forest being the closest to an area that I frequent, I visited it solely for the Field Roast Plant Based Signature All American Hot Dogs which are known as the Plant-based Garden Dog at Portillo's. Along with purchasing the Plant Based Signature All American Hot Dogs, I figured why not pick-up some tea and see what other plant-based foods were in stock. Now as for my visit to this Whole Foods, parking was not bad considering that the parking lot is shared with other businesses; and given the fact that Whole Foods locations are scattered throughout Chicago and Chicagoland making them a higher demand for that community. Even with customers flowing in and out, it did not take long for me to locate a parking spot within the parking lot. Whole Foods has a clean organic vibe to it: the smell in the air, and the way things are presented inside. Very different vibe in comparison to a Jewel-Osco, Pete's Fresh Market, or Mariano's in my opinion. The aisles are marked clearly and easy to maneuver through even with the presence of other shoppers within them. I was pleased to see the number of tea products available which I found immediately after entering the location. Those that know me know that I love my tea! During this visit, I ended up purchasing a box of Bigelow Cozy Chamomile Herbal Tea, and a box of Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Lavender Herbal Tea which I hope to enjoy both as an evening tea choice. Now in between looking at the plant-based foods within the freezer section, I found the Field Roast Plant Based Signature All American Hot Dogs in a different aisle and let me tell you this! I was reminded how costly items are at Whole Foods once I locked my eyes on the price of them. I contemplated even purchasing them until I reminded myself that it was the reason why I even visited this Whole Foods in the first place. Next to them, there was a pack of Field Roast Classic Smoked Plant-Based Frankfurters that I picked up as well which were a couple of dollars lower than the Plant Based Signature All American Hot Dogs. I can never have a grocery store visit and not pick up dinner for the evening, but that is just me. For dinner, I purchased one of their Soul Vegan meals that comes with Lasagna; Fresh Greens and Roast inside which you can find at Whole Food, and Pete's Fresh Market locations. There were also the 365 Whole Foods Market Burritos that I took a liking to as well; the price of their 365 Burritos was very pleasant to see post seeing the price of the Plant Based Signature All American Hot Dogs, so I could not resist. I utilized self-checkout during this visit because I only had half of a handheld shopping basket of items. What I admired about self-checkout was that there was an employee cleaning each checkout machine after each customer utilized a machine, which I must say is another thing that sets Whole Foods apart from other grocery stores. I have shopped at some grocery stores that have sickened me to even sit my grocery items on the conveyor belt because they were so filthy, but that was the least of my worries at this Whole Foods. I was in the area and needed to do an Amazon return, so I figured I'd stop here! My friend told me that this location was recently redone, but it didn't seem particularly "new" inside. Instead, it felt a bit cramped with low ceilings, a bit like an urban Trader Joe's (or most of them...and I say that as a major fan of that store!). Even so, the customer service was pleasant at the Amazon returns counter. I decided to kill some time picking up non-perishable items, since I'd be out and about for the rest of the evening. The prices were pretty fair, at least for a Whole Foods, and the variety was excellent. I asked an employee where I could find something super specific, and he was very persistent trying to find it. I found something that is a competitor brand but largely the same, with his help, and he even asked from there if I wanted him to find the actual brand itself. By that point, there was no need, but I appreciated him going the extra mile! read more

We were in the area and dropped in here. I'm sure the product quality and staff here is typical of Whole Foods and that is very good. The wife picked up a Seeduction pan loaf and it was very fresh and delicious. The mediocre rating is mainly due to the small size and congestion at this particular store. It's simply the smallest and most congested of any Whole Foods I have ever been in. I think it's just reflective of the lack of space and age of the buildings in the Oak Park/River Forest area. It's hard to rate a business like this but one thing that always needs to be addressed is front end customer service. This store has none. Stopped in here on a Sunday late morning and only a couple of cashiers working , with most customers having to use the self checkout. Lines were ridiculous so that's why I'm rating it on the lower end. From prior reviews this isn't the first time this store has had this problem Other than this issue the positive side was convenient parking, and the inside was clean and well stocked. Do not trust the amazon counter. I returned something there more than once and they do not give you a receipt. You are then at the mercy of the poor amazon return system. I chatted three times over 30 days and ultimately was told that b/c the counter (the "carrier") didn't scan it, that I can not get a refund. I can not prove I dropped it off b/c I don't get a receipt. Often the people are on the phone or so busy they are not paying attention. This place is a whole vibe, pun intended. It's so fresh and clean. You feel healthy and svelte just walking in. I took time to peruse the fruits and veggies, be enchanted by the meat-sandwich counter, turn my nose up at the fresh seafood on ice, it's got tons of healthy snacks and items worth trying. Ordered two briskets for Easter. Was advised I could pick them up at 2:00 on Friday. Arrived at store at 2:00 an waited behind a customer who had just ordered a brisket. I stepped up and asked for my order. Butcher shrugged and said they didn't have any more. I told him he just sold a brisket to the person in front of me. His response--we don't have anymore, and shrugged again. I went and filed a complaint at customer service. The woman at the counter said she would make sure the manager received it. 1. A butcher that couldn't care less 2. A store manager that doesn't bother to respond to a complaint 3. U.S. Choice brisket from Costco much cheaper and excellent quality. 4. This is a solid Whole Foods! It's located in a nice strip mall and there's plenty of parking. Although the size of the store is small compared to others I've been too, they still carry a good variety of products. Their fresh section is stocked well and I think their prices are fair. I actually love coming here to shop for their dairy free selection. They have a ton of yogurts to choose from and I especially like the larger tubs. They're always so hard to find at other stores so I'm glad I have many to chose from here. Also, their dairy free ice cream selection here is amazing. They even carry Jeni's Ice cream!! Although those sell out quick. They have a solid system down for online grocery orders and their team is really organized with them. All of the staff I've encountered here have been friendly and adhering to all COVID safety precautions. A Whole Foods employee here gave me a phone number claiming it's Amazon support and it connected to a medical device sales line!!!!! I called Whole Foods Riverforest main line to ask about their delivery option. A lady who picked up said they don't deliver now, but I should reach out to Amazon to take care of my issue. The number I was given was 888-280-4341. Sure, everyone knows Whole Foods is affiliated with Amazon, so I called the number. Upon calling, I was asked if I spoke English, then the next question was "if you or anyone in the household is 60 years of age or older". Okay, I thought, Amazon is taking a precaution for food delivery to a household of seniors. How nice. So I clicked "Yes" for this question. Next thing I heard was a recorded message saying "We are excited to offer you a special promotion! ...... we would like to give you more information on this free medical alert device to wear around your neck......" WHAT????? After a few minutes of confusion, calling Amazon Customer Service twice, and Googling the number, I understood that it was an attempted scam at getting my information. Whole Foods Riverforest, you should be screening your employees better. When I spoke to another Whole Foods staff to double check on what's going on, he said there was no delivery and did not know why. This is really odd because 5 minutes prior to this two of Amazon support reps said the Riverforest WF does deliver. Amazon should be all over this case. A staff who picked up Whole Foods main line giving out a scam number claiming it's Amazon Service Line? It makes me shudder to imagine what if my elderly parents had to deal with this, thinking the device was a legitimate Amazon product and gave out financial information. read more

In neighborhood where ae used to live we had WF market and guy who worked in the pizza station made amazing pizza. I am glad I found Jakob in our new neighborhood store to continue this once in a while our pizza night tradition. Jakob is great employee who listens our wishes and make pizza for our preferences. I recommended pizza to some our friends and stopped buy to picked it up since they accepted our combination but Jakob was not there, so we got very very bad pizza.. nothing similar to WF pizza and I was disappointed.. this five star is going to Jakob who made our day. Ps I have to mention that only Jakob makes efforts and try to please us and our requests. I like grilled portabello and sometimes they are out of them so I accept regular mushrooms. But once when I accepted he said he is out of them. That guy was upset when I asked if I can go to veggies and pick up mushrooms (I would pay for them but I asked him to use those mushrooms for pizza). This is my neighborhood WF and I love it! The Gold Coast location just off of State St could learn a lot from this River Forest location. It's always clean inside (outside is a different story), well organized, and stocked and I love love LOVE the bulk fill your own variety of spices station that they have. Do I do all my grocery shopping here... no. Yes, WF in general can be pricey. That shouldn't come as a shock to anyone really. I too agree, as other Yelpers have already mentioned, that since Amazon took over there has been a decline in customer service and not just at this location. I'm still a happy shopper nonetheless when shopping at WF and especially this one. read more

Updating this review after years... Beware: This Whole Foods is unlike any Whole Foods you've been to. It is cramp, cluttered, and often understaffed. The hot food bar is a disappointment compared to other Whole Foods - identical menu items don't even look the same. The parking lot is poorly lit and doesn't have cart return stations, resulting in abandoned carts in bad places. This store has had opportunities to expand, as it's neighbor in the strip mall is often vacant, but they don't take advantage. I don't know why. Nearby Pete's Fresh Market has a better selection and nearer Sugar Beet Food Co-op has better local options. read more

If you are elderly or at risk, don't shop here, as they only offer one hour per week for such shoppers, at 7:00 am on Friday. If you want the produce Whole Foods was famous for, good luck with that. You will see empty shelves and no one available to find out if they might actually have bananas in the back. If you are looking for the same roast beef you bought for years, from butchers who were amazingly informed and helpful, sorry, they don't work here any more. It doesn't matter what time I shop here at, there is always a crazy long line no matter what! It's always at least a 10-15 minute wait just to pay. I've left without buying anything on several occasions because the lines were just too long. The poor cashiers always look miserable, which I'm sure has to do with them being under-staffed, so I don't blame them. Service jobs with emotional labor are hard, especially when companies under-staff you to keep profit high. read more

This place is such a rip off! I bought Naturtint hair dye and it was $20... It's online for $10 from vitacost! I was in a pinch so I bought it. I asked if they price matched at the register and he wasn't sure, so he was nice enough to call for me to see if they did. They do not. The lines were ridiculously long and by long I mean every lane was open with at least 5 people deep in each. The express lane had even more people probably about 15 and moved slower than the other lanes. It's crazy and a way to spend money stupidly fast. read more

I have to preface this review by saying that if it were up to me, I would hardly ever shop here because I just don't see why my juice has to be $3.99 for 10 ounces or my steak has to cost $40 when they don't offer prime at this location. That being said, the husband buys the hype and likes to come here about every other week and buy ridiculous things like 4 brownies for $5 or every type of coconut milk product and odd cheeses he just lets mold. I often try to get something for my weekday lunhces at the fresh counter and cannot believe the rudeness of people (customers) in this area. While the regular grocery has avoided cutters by having numbers, apparently Whole Foods thinks they are "above" this routine. Ok, so don't waste paper and get the reusable plackards with numbers - make them from some renewable source - or your old plastic bags that are probably in some warehouse somewhere. Seriously, train your people to be able to tell - when there are only two people standing there and one is being waited on, the other person is NEXT - no matter how many pushy people walk up in the time you are taking care of the first. And stop shoving 100 items into my one paper bag at the checkout. For these prices, give me another bag already and stop looking at me like I am satan for not having any bags with me. I actually do recycle the bags- to a school who uses them for book covers, so it's not like I am totally wasteful. Or, you need to give me a discount for shoving 50 pounds of stuff into one bag that I have to carry to my car like a fragile child for fear it will all go tumbling into the street. I'm not sure if it was my sunny disposition (read: annoyed scowl) or just standard operating procedure, but one Whole Foods rep earns a gold star from me. I've become more selective about what I put on my curly hair, avoiding products with sulfates, parabens, and silicones. As much as I love Trader Joe's they can't compete with the selection that Whole Foods has. Since I had to be at my parents anyway I decided to hit the WF in my home town and avoid an angst-filled trip to the Mega WF*. Since the product I needed has a doppelganger - same bottle, same brand, similar name, different product - I called ahead and specifically asked them to check for me. I was assured that they had the exact item I needed was in stock. When I got to WF the product I needed was nowhere to be found so I found a rep (sorry his name eludes me) to make sure I hadn't overlooked it. He confirmed what I suspected, despite my phone call they didn't have what I needed. BUT, here's where he earns my praise, he offered me a $10 gift card for the hassle and frustration. This superstar went out of his way to do right by me, holla!! Other than that, this WF is just like the other standard stores: full of lots of good stuff that will suck the money out of your wallet and always bustling. TIP: WF 365 Organic Brand makes a lot of natural, cruelty-free, environmentally-friendly toiletry products that are very reasonably priced. * Chicago's flagship WF doesn't carry the brand I was looking for (Jane Carter Solution) even though the regular stores do.
