I have been able to get a substantial amount of good food here. The store appeared quite spacious inside. I liked that they have self-checkout kiosks. I also appreciated that they have a dining area to sit down and eat. Times I have gone to this store, it was not too full of other customers like other stores have been. This is a magical grocery store! I go for a treat and I have so much fun picking up stuff I typically don't budget for like their macaroons or a fancy can of cold cinnamon coffee. But they also have staples at reasonable prices, higher than I budget for, but within reason. I typically shop at Jewel for the coupons/sales but going to Fresh Thyme is a special treat and I get to splurge on a tub of ice cream or try a new face lotion. It's just so fun. My parents lived in the area decades ago when it was a Dominick's. It was always busy as it borders a pretty dense area of EP, RF, OP and Chicago. My first clue should've been that it was virtually empty mid day the week before Christmas. But I was in the area to get some other things so I thought I'd knock a few things off holiday grocery list. I've no idea about the store brand, but it looked clean and bright. The prices aren't uber expensive but they aren't cheap either. At first I was excited about the choices and was happy that I got my Christmas Eve cheese platter items off the list. Is this place about scoring "old and stale stuff?" Everything and I mean everything I purchased was off. The cocktail shrimp ring was freezer burned and inedible. I purchased 4 days before so I know it wasn't on me. Next the cheese- smoked Gouda- tasteless- goat cheese off- crisps for the platter - soggy and devoid of flavor. Chocolates- stale. I could go on but you get the point. I don't live in the area but if this is what their stores are about- no thanks. read more

My favorite location!!! I love the various options available here - liquor, vegan and vegetarian foods, vitamins and supplements and their flower and plenty selection is always nice! I'm a huge fan of their soups as well - the wild rice and chicken noodle soup are my favorites. The veggies and fruits are normally always fresh and I love their selections of sage, incense, and oils. Self checkout lanes were recently added, which makes it easier and quicker for you to get in and out! Enjoy! read more

I have to agree with the misleading pricing mentioned by Ed B. Mislabeled or misrepresented pricing is a very common occurrence at this location. I shop at this location at least once a week and I encounter a pricing inconsistency probably every two to three weeks. I sense that the cashiers are annoyed with me at this point - as I frequently have to ask them to remove an item if I don't feel like going through the hassle of returning to the shelf to point out the mistake. As Ed mentioned, the pricing rarely works in your favor, and I have only once had them honor their posted price. The mispricing usually takes one of several forms. A common one for which I can assume some responsibility is that they frequently have an expired sale sign on an item. This is one is hard to fathom as they change sales weekly so they should be aware of what is current versus expired. Understandably, it is on me to read the fine print to ensure that the dates are current, but this is a frustrating burden when I am in a rush. Additionally, non-discounted items are frequently intermixed with the sale items. As one of many examples, the more expensive cuts of salmon (King?) can be found in the same bin as the farmed fish. The price differential can sometimes be a factor of two, so these are the items I consult with the staff to fix in my order (I'm not going to waste time on a $1-2 difference, I'll just grumble). Then there are the non-sale items. Take the beer isle for example. On occasion I will think I am purchasing a sixer at the price marked on the shelf, only to find out at the register that the items were 'mistakenly' put on the wrong shelf. This one especially hurts, because the little college boy in me gets excited about trying a new brew. Similarly pernicious are the items that are just outright mispriced, for which the item is in the correct bin, but the advertised priced is inconsistent with what is recalled at the register. I appreciate that the staff is helpful in rectifying these matters, either by confirming the price with me at the shelf or helping me remove the transaction from my bill. All that said, it is annoying knowing that a significant percentage of my check-outs will involve price remediation with a clerk. Of course I have encountered the occasional mispricing at other grocery stores I frequent, but those incidents are exceedingly rare in comparison. My rating of 3 stars reflects my enthusiasm for the overall quality of items I have purchased from the store and the cordiality of the staff, which is offset by the annoyance of analyzing my receipts like a forensic accountant. What an absolute treat! I've driven by this store a few dozen times since it opened last year but I had no idea it was so cool. I just thought it was a regular neighborhood grocery store so I never stopped in. I went today on a Saturday morning and had the place nearly to myself. Easy access lot parking. Very quiet inside. Very friendly and helpful staff. Everything was super fresh as the breads were coming out of the oven- hot! The Ciabatta is fantastic! The salad bar being set up looked amazing. Near the salad bar you can grind your own oatmeal and peanut butter, pour your own olive oils. The lotion/shampoo/soap selection and all the healthcare items offered were very interesting. They had a huge natural health and homeopathic section. I bought a cool wooden massager tool! They had testers and samples throughout which I enjoy. In addition to all the usual departments like bakery, frozen, deli, etc they also offer some neat things like toys, yoga gear, lunch containers/thermos and gifts. Deli carries nitrite-free meats at a slightly lower cost than Whole Foods. Also all the fresh fruits and vegetables were priced either equal to or lower than the cost of similar items at Jewel. I purchased the snow crabs that were on sale for 6.99/lb. I disregarded how small and scrawny they looked since I was purchasing for seafood Mac. Never again, these were by far the worst crab legs I've ever purchased and I eat seafood often! Watery, mushy meat is not worth anyone's money. read more

Fresh Thyme has definitely declined over the years, especially their dairy. Many times I've purchased sour milk and chunky half&half within the expiration date. Today, I opened up a new bag of shredded cheese that expires months from now and it was moldy. Fresh Thyme, River Forest, has lost another customer. Today I was overcharged on two items, one I caught and the other not until I got home. I am use to the great unfriendliness of the staff I encounter at each visit, especially the check out clerk. However, if this gross overcharging of two items at today's visit was the first time, I would overlook it. Unfortunately this has happened more than once in the past. I do not believe that I should have to monitor every item going through the scanner. (Not self check out). There is an assumption that when an item is on sale, the registers are programmed accordingly. Not so. And it is also assumed that if there is a $$ off coupon attached to the packaged food item, the clerk would notice it and honor the discount. Not so. I won't be back. read more

This is my go-to grocery stop. I love the size. You don't feel like you've got a huge space to cover and it's easy to find things. I loved their small baked goods section pre-covid, but now it's really limited. They have a lot of gluten free options. They used to have fresh brewed coffee pre-covid...waiting for that to come back too. Their health/wellness section is fun. Sort of like whole foods but not as pricey. I come here for certain things that I always need; brown cow yogurt (the best best best) fruit and veggies, frozen meals and prepared meals and cheese. There is something going on at the deli and meat counter. I don't think I've ever been here and actually had someone help me at those counters. You generally have to stand around waiting and then bug someone to help you. It's the only thing I don't like about this store. I was very glad that another location of "Fresh Thyme Farmers Market" that actually is much closer to our house. I have visited the one in the city on Elston every time I got a chance, but traffic over there is always congested due to the ongoing construction. The new one in River Forest seems to be a little smaller. However, many neighborhood shoppers showed up since they were on their grand opening week. The items I usually get from Fresh Thyme are prepared foods and seafood from their seafood department. The young man who helped me behind the counter was very courteous and even asked me if I had a preference on which two (2) pieces of salmon I would like. I'm pretty easy-going as a person, yet I certainly appreciated his attentiveness and customer service. Their grand opening deals were quite excellent on produces, except the avocados I purchased were way under-ripened and hard as stones. Sorry, I couldn't render a perfect score since I'm an avocado lover. Back to the prepared foods I mentioned previously, I buy them because they make great weekday lunches. In addition, there is a nut butter station where you can either take one of the containers they already made (prices were listed on the lid or taped on the bottom), or you can grind fresh on your own. The cashier and bagger were super nice. I didn't sign up for their loyalty program on this trip, but I did it afterward so that I could start earning points and clipping digital coupons. I found prices on most items reasonable and the atmosphere is less pretentious than fellow competitors that emphasize on carrying natural and organic foods. read more

We have been coming to this grocery store since it opened and love the mix of specialty items and standard grocery fare (with the focus being more on specialty). Fresh Thyme is a bit like Trader Joe's crosses with Whole Foods - you won't find a lot of the basic brands you would find at a "normal" grocery store and there is a large vitamin/supplement section. But the selection is great and the prices are good. Also it's always clean and the people who work here are always very happy and friendly. We have continued to shop here during the stay-at-home period and they have maintained a clean store and friendly service while also spreading things out a bit in the produce section to make more space for maneuvering carts. I'm a huge fan of Fresh Thyme because it's so close to me. I love that it reminds me of Whole Foods but much better prices for fruit and veggies. There is consistently great service from Patty and from a younger guy who is usually there in the evenings. The one thing I do not like is the meat/cheese counter. Whoever is there is always in a bad mood and I'm sometimes even afraid to ask for my cold cuts. I really need my cold cuts for work. If I didn't need them I would just skip. RATING FOR EMPLOYEES AND STAFF IS 5 STARS. I love Fresh Thyme. Not because it is the easiest to get to, closest store, or because it has a great selection or products. I come here specifically because of the employees; their kindness and happiness is something no other grocery store provides. As for the management, something is happening and I know I am not the only customer who sees/feels it. The automated check out lanes forcing customers away from the excellent staff and towards an automated system. The employees I would normally seen are now either no longer there or hours reduced. It is very unfortunate and when those faces are no longer there, or no longer happy, I'll be going to one of the many other grocery stores in the area that are closer, cheaper while offering more, higher quality products. read more

Two stars for the unique selection this market has; one star for the customer service. Today I was publicly and loudly shamed by a cashier, in front of other customers. The customer in front of me, six feet away, was nearly done with their transaction, so I began unloading my basket. The cashier yelled for me to get back so sternly that it startled me. Skip to five seconds later, when I am nearly done, the customer behind me places his items on the belt. The cashier says nothing to the person behind me who did the exact same thing. Needless to say, I felt humiliated and demeaned; for whatever the reason she felt the need to berate me in public. We all think we have suffered through horrible customer service at some point. But you haven't experienced the worst until you shop with this depressing, bitter, poorly managed staff. The deli counter person will make you wonder - was there really someone worse applying for this position? The register people are generally nice but the person who "manages" the store prefers from their butt resting in a chair must enjoy loving at lines. I truly believe that if there were one customer in the store they would close the registers until at least four people were in line. This place saved my butt on thanksgiving! Nice place to go and find stuff but a lot of times it's just the fresh thyme brand. A lot of the tin foil and tissue is not great quality. When this store first opened I loved it. However, late in 2020 they were taken over by Meijer. The result? Many specialty items and organics have been replaced with standard items like Quaker Oats that I can get other places for less money. Now there is mostly pre-packaged meats. It's no longer cut and packaged by butchers. Why? Because they don't want to pay for butchers. i heard they cut staff salaries. Now there are a bunch of new cashiers who are dumber than bricks. Natural Living area is going to be downsized. if you have special dietary needs you can do just as well shopping at Jewel or Mariano's as far as selection and price are concerned. Or better yet, just go to Meijer. It will be almost the same experience. read more

I usually come here to get a salad for lunch if I'm out in the field. I got a sample of the milk chocolate cashews and upon going up to the register the FIRST thing out of the cashiers mouth is do you want me to weigh that. Pointing at my sample cup. And proceeded to tell me that my sample was not a sample even though there was no overfill of cashews in the small cup. And stated that the manager would have had me weigh that and pay for it.Now we all know how small the sample cups are it was laughable. This is my neighborhood grocery store where I go to pick up something when I'm in a hurry. The selection/price point/quality aren't always the best, but it works when I need an ingredient for a meal or we're out of milk. I've gotten spoiled seafood there before and have been overcharged a number of different times. The customer service is also lacking on so many levels as I learned from my experience today. A few examples: Unsalted Kettle Potato Chips (try 'em you'll like 'em), Dave's Killer Bread (thin-sliced), Bantam Bagels (of Shark Tank fame). I am still on the fence about this store. It is a cross between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. The prices are Whole foods and the look is Trader Joe's. I like that they have Boar's Head in their deli. I did purchase Fresh Thyme's home made Mango Salsa and bit into a lemon seed. They refunded my money, but told me that they were sure this was an isolated incident...really? I'm completely disgusted by this place, and I am sure if you go, you will see why. This is what I experienced: Products: All of the "fresh" fruit and veggies has swarms of fruit flies around them. Not only that, 3/4 of the avocados, strawberries, and bananas were actually ROTTEN. Staff: Completely incompetent. I understand this is a new store, and it takes time to train new staff, however I went at 8 pm on a Friday and there was only one register open with 10 people in line, and 4 other staff member standing around because they didn't have training to run the register. Also, when asking staff members where to find the soy sauce, they replied "Uh... well the person who usually stocks that is not in so...." ??? What? I also used the restroom in the facility, and there was no toilet paper, no paper towels, and no soap. I told the first staff member I saw that they were out of these amenities in the ladies room room and he responded, "oh, I think you need to tell that to someone else" and walked away. Not so helpful... Overall cleanliness and user friendliness: Food in the salad bar was old and not taken care of, rotten "fresh" fruits and veggies, paper towels and bags all over the place. As I stated before, staff is incompetent and extremely unhelpful. Summary: Save yourself the headache and frustration of going here and spending money on over priced food that is expired.
