It was cool... Having attended a few candle-making classes before at other businesses, it was difficult not to compare this experience to prior ones. The bar was previously set and unfortunately Wick & Sip didn't fully meet it. More scent variety would have been great. It was also nearly impossible to smell the fragrances from the samples, so you had to reference the full supply bottles to get a worthwhile whiff. Luckily my class was relatively small, but even so, getting the chance to smell certain scents was cumbersome once they were claimed by others (again, you had to use the full bottles because the smaller samples were too faint). I didn't mind the selection of drinks, but please keep in mind that they come with the purchase so don't expect huge portions. Also, both times, the gentleman poured noticeably larger amounts for my guest compared to mine. No big deal given that these aren't top shelf drinks, but it was just weird and seemed intentional. It's downtown so parking can be frustrating, but fortunately I went at the right time and managed to park in front of the establishment. I would definitely go again if invited by someone, but I would first consider other similar businesses if it's an outing that I plan myself or just feel like making candles as a solo activity. read more

I have always wanted to make a candle and my partner surprised me with taking a class on a Friday evening. I am surprised that they stay open until 10pm on some nights so you can have a fun activity without hitting the town. For $45 you get to mix up to two scents and make a soy based candle and have up to two beverages. They have a nice mix of wine, cider, beer, sangria, and NA beverages. The wine was on the sweet side so be prepared for that, but loved that the sparking water option was a can of La Croix. You got to pick your own apron from a variety of sayings and then hit the scent wall. They have ground coffee for you to reset your senses between scents. Some of them are overly strong and they include the scent layers so you can know. I liked that they provided the finished candle selection to see what you wanted. We were helped by a lovely young man (name started with an M, I am so sorry, you said it like four times!). Even though we were towards the end of the night, he was super helpful. They do melt the wax for you so all you need to do is pick out your jar, mix the scents, and then pour the mx into the jar. The longest part of the class is waiting for the wax to dry and they put it under the dryer for you. Make sure to let it sit so you do not accidentally move your wick. I could see this being fun for a birthday or bachelorette party and you could tell the long tables were set up that way. They do also have two other locations. read more

This candlemaking experience was a surprise from my partner! We had a great time from start to finish. I absolutely loved that we were supporting a black and woman owned small business. We were greeted by "Fred" who gave us a rundown of the history and guided us step-by-step through the candlemaking process. Fred was so gracious and we can't thank him enough for his grace as we arrived an hour ahead of our scheduled appointment time, unknowingly. My partner lives in CST zone so we didn't even realize we were following that. lol Nevertheless Fred allowed us to start our experience early since we were already there. We got to have 2 complimentary drinks throughout the experience. I opted for the blueberry lemonade cider. It was 6.2% ABV and very delicious. My partner and I both opted for the 2 scent candle and it did not disappoint. I mixed "Lily & Hibiscus" with "Pink Sands" and the outcome smell was so perfect. I can't remember what smells my partner mixed but they smelled nice too. They have a selection of items to purchase. The experience was totally worth it. Would definitely recommend this place. They give a 15min grace period, and fortunately, they allowed us to still attend. The space is bright, welcoming and has a fun vibe with the paintings and different signs. All the tools you need are laid out at the table as well as a fragrance menu. I love how customizable this was between the candle holder, fragrances and stickers. While your candle is hardening you can browse the candles and other items on sale by the owner. There are also many photo ops while vibing to the music. This is my second time coming here and it was absolutely amazing both visits. For this trip, I saw they were having a Gal's night and knew my best friend and I had to go. We found parking at the lot two doors down and it was only $5 from 7:30 pm to 6:30 am. There was street parking though everything was taken due to another class finishing up before us. When we walked in, the shop was decorated in Valentine's day decorations and the displays as well as the tables had gorgeous roses on them. After checking in, we picked a table that they had set up for the number of people in your party. We then went and started picking our scents. They have a scent list at your seat so you can see them organized by category, but there's also a scent card by each fragrance with a description of the notes. You get to pick whichever vessel you want and they have some really good choices. They had so many different colors and some were matte, others were see through. I picked the oil slick type color to match the other jar I have at work. The class is so fun! The staff walk you step by step through everything and help if needed. The energy is always up and in between talking, they have music playing to jam to. For $45, you get everything needed to make your candle, as well as 2 drinks. For this event, they had special mimosas (pineapple and strawberry) which were delicious! For an hour and a half class with two drinks plus everything to make a custom candle, I think the price is very reasonable. I also ended up buying some premade soaps and incense as well. They have you pick out a motivational apron, so I always love to see which ones there are. I will most definitely be back and am already planning the next trip. Street parking is available, and depending on the day of the week, you may have to park several blocks away and walk. My partner and I came to Wick and Sip as part of a group event hosted by a local alumni organization. We were given clear instructions by the friendly employees. The first step is to select up to two scents from the scent wall. You are given the chance to smell all of the options, which are grouped by scent profile. Once you have selected the scents, you select your vessel for your candle. The employees walk you through how to pour and mix the scents with the wax in the vessel, and help you place the wick. You also get a complimentary beverage. The final step is to create your own label and name your scent. The shop feels very cozy with unique art on the walls and large windows in the front. There is also a large older staircase in the back that is perfect for photo opportunities. Overall a fun date night activity. My only complaint was that I felt a little rushed to pick my scents and complete the steps to finish the candle, but since we were part of a large group that had booked the shop for a certain block of time, this was understandable. The vibe at Wick and Sip is fun and relaxed and our host, Monet, was knowledgeable and vivacious. They had so many fragrances to pick from that could be mixed into unique combinations. I found it challenging to pick one out with so many choices but I ultimately mixed bamboo with eucalyptus and really liked the result. Before this experience I only bought my wife candles as a gift occasionally but now I appreciate them a little differently. A great group activity and I want to bring my wife for a date night so she can make her own, too. The wine is included but we were there on a Monday early afternoon, so no one was getting drunk. Had reservations with girlfriends for Saturday at four. The website made it clear on more than one occasion while booking our appointment that we should arrive ten minutes early because they had a strict late policy and that if you arrived 15 minutes late, you would not be able to participate. My friends and I were on time and ready. However, from the very beginning we were disappointed. The music was incredibly loud and there were videos showing pictures of candles other people had made with vulgar labels. When class still had not started by 4:25, we had to walk out because we had dinner reservations that we were going to miss with a delayed start time. We were given the option of taking with us one of about a twenty pre-made candles. I was very disappointed. Not only did we waste our money, it was not the fun experience we were looking for. If you could care less about super loud music and don't mind vulgarity, go! Have fun! I am sure the younger demographic there didn't mind. But if you are looking for a dignified outing with the girls, this is NOT your place. read more
