World of Mirth is fun for any age! It's such a cute gift shop with gifts for anyone. I purchased the most ridiculous Christmas tree hat there on my most recent visit, and they have plenty of items available for kids and adults. There's so much to see, you could barely digest it all in one visit. I also love that they have a photobooth (for a small fee) in the back. Such a cute touch. What a cool toy store that's fun for all ages to come and find something. There's puzzles, keychains, plushies, anime, Disney, games and just a bunch of cool gadgets here. I would say some of the items can be a bit pricy and come with a open mind to just explore. I would say service is okay, I came in the morning to check out the place on my own and I came back a hour before closing on Monday and they told me that unless I know what I'm getting, they wouldn't let me back in since they unexpectedly wanted to close early and said I was already here earlier which came out rude since I was bringing my friends to come help shop and support. Maybe they have their reason, but I just thought it was strange. I do enjoy seeing the toys, but sometimes service can be finnicky. I don't know who loved this store more -- my daughters or me! The World of Mirth is a magical playland of toys that includes everything from books, plushies (sooo many high quality plushies), dolls, craft kits, dress up toys, and more. We browed around for at least 45 minutes and discovered something new every time. I let each of my girls choose one gift to take home and they had so much fun figuring out what they wanted the most. It was a toss up between a princess wand, baby doll, and butterfly umbrella but my toddler decided on a little flashlight that projects images of the galaxy in the sky and my seven-year old decided to grab a set of kitty cat highlighters. The staff who worked here were enthusiastic and fun and spoke to each family who entered the store. It seemed like they really enjoyed what they do which made the whole experience more fun. Things to note: - There are no bathrooms in the store, they suggest going to Capital One Cafe next door or Mellow Mushroom across the street. - There is a vintage photo booth in the back. I was so glad to see that world of Earth was still in business period I've been shopping here since the 90s when I was a college student at VCU I was home visiting my family and I realized I needed a new sunny angel hipper for my phone period I gave a call had a great conversation with one of the employees and off I was. When I arrived, everyone was super friendly. 20 years later..... the selection of kitsch & wonder is still unmatched. There are so many different cool and cute little things that I had to exercise extreme self-control in this place! This store was everything I hoped It would be.The staff was so friendly and really took delight in helping us find what we were looking for. Currently the store is limiting Its capacity to 20 people and limiting shopping time to 15 minutes. As bummed as we were about the time constraints that did not stop us from having a blast. I've followed World of Mirth's instagram for a while and it was one of the stops I had planned while I was in Richmond! First Visit: First impression was such a cute and adorable shop! I came for the Sonny Angels which they had behind the counter since there were only 2 boxes. Me and my boyfriend both got 2 for a great price (much cheaper than where we are from). The workers are all nice and even chatted with us about certain products. So many fun and quirky items to pick and play with, everyone is sure to leave with something they like! Second Visit: Our hotel cleaning staff accidentally threw away my bag of Sonny Angels and stuff I got from here so we made a second visit the next day. We called ahead and came to pick up the last 3 and our cashier was so nice and even gave us a free sticker since he felt bad for us. Overall such a neat and fun place to shop at! I stop by just about every time I'm in Carytown just to admire the adorable stuffed animals (like GIANT pusheen!) and check out their card and board games for adults, such as Exploding Kittens, Cards Against Humanity, and Would You Rather. They also have an amazing selection of unique, cute, and clever cards for any occasion, which definitely beat the generic ones you'll find at drugstores and superstores. More than just being a great place to buy gifts, World of Mirth feels like a safe space for people to be themselves. They don't bat an eye at grown women like myself giving the plush Domo a hug. The store has a tragedy attached to it (I'll never get over that) but I'm so glad that the family's legacy of this terrific store can live on. The store is just plain awesome! The unique, fun items are endless. There are so many creative and unusual gifts and toys for young and old alike. They have a dress up area in the back, too. There were so many customers in there it was hard to navigate and the customer line to check out was making it very hard to walk the store - at least 20 customers in the line! Definitely worth visiting - lots of Pusheen, Harry Potter, rare toys, popular toys, gifts and a really neat Day of the Dead display at the front. Two employees greeted us and were very friendly. Perhaps in days of yore (alright, maybe 10 years ago), toy stores were more of a common thing, but in today's day and age, tech gadgets and electronics seem to be taking over. While I'm a huge fan of technology, I absolutely love a good toy store. I also think it's important for children's minds to play and interact with physical toys, so I think it's very important for toy stores to exist. Enough of that though, all things aside this is a fantastic store. There are so many different kinds of toys here that short of walking through everything, there's no way to describe everything. There are board games, stuffed animals, small animal figurines, clothing items, books, Doctor Who collectibles, Ghibli toys, and so much more. Originally was very excited about this store. They have a lot of very cool merchandise, but as soon as I walked inside I was being watched like a hawk. I was not greeted, nor was anyone helpful or friendly to me while I shopped, and I felt guilty simply for being in the store. The woman at the front of the store was eyeing me down with a glare the entire time I looked around, and I was even basically accused of stealing at the register, as the employee "casually" asked if I had changed my mind about an item I was looking at previously with a tone that suggested he was only interested in knowing if I had put it down instead of stuffing it somewhere in my coat. I understand if theft is an issue, but paying customers should not be made to feel like they are doing something wrong when they are spending their time and money in your business. Would not give this company another cent just because of how shockingly presumptuous their employees are and how lackluster their customer service is. Go anywhere else in Richmond, as you can even find their products cheaper at Mongrel! Edit for store owner: I was in the store around 1:15 pm yesterday on Sunday January 28th. You can definitely tell the owners or managers are scared to death of Covid... they make you mask up before entering despite vaccination status, and follow you around to make sure you don't touch anything or even put on a hat. Kinda felt rushed and not welcoming. If you're that scared then don't open the doors. I was asked 4 times in 3 min if I need any help and also reminded to only stay 15 min twice. However, the request to limit browsing to 15 minutes is awkward at best (especially on a weekday) and was clumsily delivered. Yet in that time frame, we found neat things. Floor staff was helpful. I was visiting Richmond and had heard amazing things about this toy shop. It really is incredible inside, and a lot bigger than it seems from the outside. When looking for some gifts for a friend's child who is at 10 months, I was immediately helped and offered so many great age-appropriate toys for them within my (pretty small) budget and that were unique and interesting. So I have been coming to this store for several years now and it's time for a review! This store has everything combined into my ultimate toy/specialty store. They carry a WIDE selection of niche goods like: TOYS (and lots of it) cellphone accessories, kids/adult games, limited edition lego sets, old school collectible-ish toys, the only place to carry unique Hello Kitty products, candy, light up toys, frisbees, outdoor games, etc. But many if not all the toys you can't find at your local toys r us, walmart or target. This store is also the only store in RVA to have carried and currently carry some items featured on the Show Shark Tank which makes it easy for me to personally check out and purchase. Prices can be a bit steep for many of the items but I think it's worth b/c it saves me the hassle of online shopping b/c i can't see the product in person. Like their FB page and sometimes there will be daily deals. I love shopping for my nephews here! So much better to do it locally than through Amazon or Target, etc. It's kind of like Mongrel nearby, but for the kiddos. They have adult gifts as well and really could spend hours here. One time I found my nephew this cool birthday card that pops up which he loved, along with his legos. I've also been for a baby gift for my cousin's son. They have items kind of sorted by age so that helps when shopping for someone specific. Today I ran in to get them each a gift card and the cashier took the time to write their names on the envelopes and the cards. They require your id when you pay with a credit card, by the way.
