I called Kaiser to locate the urgent care and or to inquire where to go to get medical treatment. After i asked the question, I was put on hold for five minutes (hello healthcare (?) person someone is bleeding) The person on the line could not have cared less about the patient but was more concerned about whether they were at work. I said I just want to know where my friend can get stitched up. They said they could see about making an appointment as long as it wasn't work related. Then they couldn't make the appointment because I didn't have my friend's Kaiser number! My take away 1. Definitely not for emergencies, even minor ones. 2. No sense of urgency for people in pain. 3. Still no true care for locals who may get hurt at work. I'm not sure why this can't be sorted out later. 4. No empathy for people who are hurt. 3. After this experience, i can't think of them as a healthcare provider, more like a concierge appointment or minors hurt organization. Wait a few years before you sign up with them. They have very very limited services here. They are fine for the most Basic of care. You will have to go off island for most treatments. Worse than unhelpful for injuries at work. They don't have anyone on island to look at workers comp issues. They will not refer you to anuoneb When you call main office on Oahu for assistance they will act like Kaua'i is another county. In a few years I'm sure they will offer more service but rightly now it's more like a storefront health clinic.

A couple of days later, my husband developed painful bumps after snorkeling off the Nā Pali Coast. Dr. Sparks was able to diagnose it from photos as a Portuguese man o' war sting. My niece had the same reaction, and he helped her as well. Once again, he took the time to educate us about the local marine life, the toxins involved, what symptoms to watch for, and how the prescribed medications would help. I especially appreciated how thoughtful and cautious he was with the medications he prescribed. What really sets Dr. Sparks apart is that he truly cares. He reminded me of the kind of village doctor everyone hopes to find--knowledgeable, compassionate, reassuring, and willing to spend the time you need. His mobile service was incredibly convenient. When I did make it to the front of the line the registration was so slow it would make sloths look quick. We had to come back the next day for my other kid and the registration actually took longer than the day before! Then the wait to be seen was another hour and a half. So painful.
