This place is so awesome. We did a private group session with Michelle last weekend, for my sister's bachelorette party. Michelle lead us through an amazing class. All of us decided we would definitely come back if we were ever in Portland again. Michelle and Wyatt were so helpful and easy to work with, when setting up our event. The Yoga Space is om-mazing! I'm so glad to have found this studio. I was looking for options near my work (in the Pearl area) with a new student introductory option to try, and saw that the Yoga Space offers a screaming deal of an unlimited first month for $35 for new students! After that, the prices are comparable to other studios in town. The space is really, truly gorgeous. I've driven around the building previously, admiring the architecture and wondering what was inside, so getting to see the interior was neat after all this time. The high ceilings and stained glass windows make for beautiful touches to a light, airy, and peaceful space. The teachers are all great. While they have their individual styles, there wasn't a single class I took that I was unhappy with. The schedule is pretty varied, with lots of options throughout the day. I only wish some of the times were slightly different, as classes often didn't line up with my unorthodox retail work schedule, but I was still able to make it work frequently enough. The atmosphere here is welcoming and inviting; it's enough of a community that you feel at home but not so insular that you feel awkward. The yoga mats are free to borrow for class, as they should be. I'm thrilled with my experience at the Yoga Space thus far and will almost definitely be a recurring practitioner. read more

Dear Portland, How I love you so. Your delicious grub, your socked in, moody weather, your accessibility (helloooo easiest transit system EVER!) and this place? The Yoga Space?!! Yes, please. A thousand times! I am in love. Wish I had found this gem earlier during my visit. I want to scoop you up in a giant hug and bring you home to Tahoe. Took a yin class because the timing worked with my schedule. Walked in super frazzled because I was afraid I was going to be late (which is always awkward in a new space). The staff greeted me with ease and cheerily pointed me in the right direction. The space was beautiful. While the rain gently fell outside, the room was dimly lit on the inside with glimmering Turkish sconces complemented by the glow of the streetlights coming through the charming diamond muntin windows in the small room. I was yinned out by the end of the class with Sarasvati Hewitt and could have spent the night there if it was an option. Lol. Everything about the space is inviting and feels so loved. Even the bathrooms are immaculate and charming. There was no rental charge for using a mat for which I was very grateful. So happy I found this ahhhh-mazing spot. Wish I had the chance to make it to another class before heading back home. I will be back someday! XO read more

She's an amazing teacher and yogini and the best part of the entire yoga experience with her is that she's a compassionate human being completely in line with the true spirit of Yoga. I have taken very few classes with her but enjoyed whenever I could visit one of her lovely studios in NW or SE, both of them filled with her positive energy. My husband took a teacher's training program with her and I dropped in a few workshops with him although this was a bit further off from where we lived, thus was not my regular studio. I always felt loved and welcomed at the Yoga Space. The space itself is inviting for anyone who chooses to immerse into Ashtanga and other forms of yoga. The NW studio especially has an ancient charm to it. Yoga seems to be a prayer here especially with the church bells ringing from the nearby cathedral so often, its a sanctuary of peace for the yogic spirit. read more

I went to this studio when I first moved to Portland. I think about it often. I'm not sure why I've put off this review as long as I have. I ADORE this studio. I've taken many different yoga classes over the years in both California and here in Portland (everything from community college classes to trendy studios), this is by far my favorite studio. The space itself is clean and inviting. There's just this relaxing aura about it that I can't quite explain, but it gives me a sense of peace that other studios really don't. The instructors are very passionate about yoga. They all have varying styles, but all have a lot to offer. Yoga has been such an important part of my life the past few years-- the "mental workout" paired with a physical workout is very, very valuable. I've been learning and trying to get into meditation lately and I can't recommend it enough. read more

Newer studio so the classes are pretty small which is nice. The main room, as other people mentioned, is very beautiful (stained glass windows, arched ceiling). They have mats and props on hand. The 3 teachers I have met are all friendly and supportive while being considerate of each individual's preferences. $30 for 1 month of unlimited classes for new students so you can try out the studio and see if you enjoy the vibe. I could see some people feeling that it's a bit "fluffy" if they are primarily seeking the physical benefits of yoga. They take a more holistic approach to yoga which gives a better balance of mental health improvement along with the physical. Music used in class is ambient and not distracting, teachers do not create an environment of competition amongst their students. Class consists of diverse age group. I always have a bit of apprehension before going to yoga class, but afterwards I am floating on a cloud of relaxation, just what I need to get my mind right/body tight. My husband and I travel a lot and we are always trying to find an all level yoga studio. The Yoga Space was perfect! We took a class from Emily Light. AMAZING! She offered a spiritually grounded practice that I call "sneaking yoga" because it isn't a fast flow but a slow and steading practice that challenges you on multiple levels and will surprise you the next day on how sore you are. Emily was very considerate in regards to asking if she could adjust us during the class and if the essential oils she used at the end of class were ok. For me, bring it on! But she was willing to honor everyone's comfort level and I appreciate it that very much. I've done yoga for the past 20 years and my husband has done it for 3. So we need to find a studio that can accommodate us both. The Yoga Space truly perfect. I have never been in a more beautiful yoga studio. This unique studio is set in an old mission style building - feels like old church without the dogma. I was yearning for a place to get exercise in a gentle way while also improving strength and flexibility. And I'm pretty sure I've found the place for me. I love that every class is welcoming to all levels, and teachers gently guide you verbally and with hands on adjustments. I've always felt nurtured and never judged. I was a little shy at first so I signed up online, and my inner(or not so inner) nerd loves that I can check in to a class ahead of time on the website. Thoughtful & personalized teaching of an already well thought out method of Yoga; Iyengar Yoga. All their teachers are certified in Iyengar Yoga, which is not trivial. You are not necessarily going to sweat in this style of Yoga but, you will strike that balance between effort and relaxation that puts the mind and body at ease. Beautifully run and equipped studio. Come on time. Iyengar studios are uniformly parochial that way. read more

This was an amazingly beautiful space. The Vinyasa class was more like a Flow but still very good.

I came here for a drop-in class during my stay in Portland. I loved that the studio is an old church converted into a yoga space. This was so cool and the atmosphere was beautiful. The class filled up and we began with centering and chanting. I appreciated that the teacher had printouts of the mantras so that I could follow along. She has a beautiful singing voice and she was very enthralling. I really enjoyed the peaceful nature of the yoga class. My only qualm is that I wish it had been a bit more fitness-oriented because I prefer to get a workout from my practice. One thing the teacher did so well was provide substitutions for injuries and limitations. Definitely stop in if you're itching for a yoga class in Portland! read more

This is my favorite yoga studio in all of Portland! It is in a beautiful old church with Stainglass windows and high ceilings! Wow! Such a magical place to practice my yoga! All of the teachers are wonderful and very helpful and accommodating! I love it when they have special events to attend, there is a fantastic outdoor courtyard and side room to expand into! I would love a sound bowl class to recharge and relax.... oh! And free mats and water if you forget your own! They don't charge like some other studios. There is a massage and facial day spa with soaking pools across from them, would be amazing to do both in the same day! read more

I can't say enough good things about this studio. Originally, when I first moved to the neighborhood, I was drawn to this studio for it's proximity to my apartment and its 30-day intro package (30 days for $30). But I haven't even bothered to check out another studio since because I am completely happy with this one. The space: definitely the most beautiful space I've ever practiced yoga in. The building used to be part of the Catholic church compound, and it has vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, stained glass windows, and plenty of charm. It's a very soothing space in which to practice. The teachers: I have yet to practice with a teacher I didn't like. All the teachers are upbeat, friendly, very, very knowledgeable, and good at what they do. They know how to help people with injuries, and they always start class by asking everyone if there's a particular pose they'd like to practice or if there's a part of the body someone would like to focus on (hips, shoulders, core, etc.). Not only are all the teachers very good, but there are some real stand-outs. Michele, Danielle, Emily, and Rosie are my personal favorites, but I'll go to anyone's class because I know it will be fantastic. Over the past 6 months of going here, my yoga practice has dramatically improved, and I've met some really incredible people to boot. The Yoga Space has all the props you'll need (bolsters, blankets, blocks, and straps), and you can use one of the studio's mats for free. As far as rates go, I think this studio is about average--maybe a little better than average (since I haven't bothered going to another studio, I can't say for sure). I think drop-ins are $13, a 12-class card is $90, a month of unlimited yoga is $99, and there are happy hour classes for a sliding scale of $7-$10. Not bad at all. read more

I was so excited to have found a potential place for yoga classes, after reading all the wonderful glowing reviews. I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd stop by just before 6:00 this evening to get some information. After entering the shared hallway, I tried to open the door to the yoga space. I did not knock, tug or make any noise. A blond man opened the door and stared at me. I said, "oh, are you open?" He coldly said, "NO!" I said okay and said I just wanted to get a little info or a pamphlet." He snarled, "I'm teaching a class right now!," firmly closed the door and turned his back on me. Really? Namaste? Peace? Best yoga studio in Portland! I just moved to Portland and have been trying out many of the yoga studios and this one is one of.my favorites in the country. The entryway is quiet and laid back...you are not inundated with noise or pictures or merchandise to buy or anything other than just calm! It's so refreshing. They don't use a computer and the sign in system is a card, as in AN ACTUAL PIECE OF PAPER!! The staff and teachers are friendly and welcoming, it doesn't feel like some elitist club or sorority that you are lucky to be welcomed in to. The space is beautiful in what seems to be an old church with wood on the ceilings and stained glass windows and a large open space (imagine old church with the pews ripped out) The music was calm chant music at the perfect volume and the teachers are really great. Very knowledgeable with a strong lineage in alignment and keeping the body safe, moving through the class in a challenging yet mindful way. They have dedicated to the art of teaching and studying yoga and you aren't just getting someone who did a 200 hour training and hasn't gone deeper. Really disappointed in my experience with this studio. I bought a 10 class card to use at their conveniently located studio in SE. They ended up closing that one and refused to give me my money back for the classes I had remaining. Instead they said I had to drive all the way to their studio in NW. That's a long and stressful drive for 7 or 8 classes that I certainly never planned on making when I bought my class card. This place really lacks integrity. read more

I'm by no means a Yogi. I prefer to do yoga to hip-hop music. That being said, this is the most beautiful yoga space I've ever been in. I've taken vinyasa and yin yoga here. The Vinyasa yoga was pretty standard, but Yin was new to me. This is completely about relaxation and deep stretching. Do not choose yin yoga if you're looking to sweat and have a good workout. Taking it in the evening though can help you relax and have a good night sleep. Again... The facility is incredible. You can't beat the high vaulted ceiling's with stain glass windows. As apparent from the photos, this is a beautiful space to practice yoga. I purchased a new student deal ($30 for 30 days), and I was very happy with the classes I tried. They were very small and intimate, so each student gets a lot of attention (but I assume this will change when the studio gets more exposure). Michele's class was definitely my favorite, but each teacher I went to was knowledgable. They also provide mats free of charge, which is definitely a nice benefit. I can't think of anything negative to say, and I plan to purchase individual class packages in the future! read more

The Yoga Space Northwest is warm and welcoming with a stunning room of vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows to practice below. Drop-in 'happy hour' classes are on a very affordable sliding scale ($5-10, I believe?) and they employ talented and experienced yogis to lead our practice. I've had the pleasure of taking Melina Donalson's class several time and really love her down-to-earth teaching style. She graciously blends a wealth of knowledge and experience with concepts and poses to make them approachable to the beginner (myself), yet never pedantic nor filled with pomp or exclusivity. I love this space; I love Melina; and would strongly encourage both novice level and well-practiced yogis to attend! read more

I really enjoy going to this studio. I have taken most of the classes and even the prenatal, and love them all! Each teacher has his/her own unique quality that they bring forth in the practice. I am a huge fan of focusing on the breath as well, and they all seem to do it. read more
