One thing people do not fully appreciate about traveling halfway across the world is just how disorienting the time difference can be at first. When my husband and I stay in BGC -- Bonifacio Global City in Taguig within Metro Manila -- our internal clocks are usually completely confused for the first several days. BGC itself is one of the most modern and walkable districts in the Philippines, filled with high-rises, parks, restaurants, shopping areas, and surprisingly peaceful streets during the early morning hours. So naturally, we often find ourselves wandering around the city at dawn while the rest of the world still seems asleep. And when it is 6:00 AM in Manila, it is roughly 5:00 PM back in Sioux Falls depending on daylight savings, which means our bodies are basically convinced it is dinner time while we are attempting to eat breakfast. Traveling is glamorous. Jet lag is not. During one of these early morning walks, we stumbled into Wildflour Cafe, which immediately gave us the feeling of an upscale neighborhood bakery mixed with a polished diner-style brunch spot. It was already surprisingly busy even at that hour, clearly a favorite among locals and early risers. Honestly, the easiest comparison I can make is: Imagine a much more refined and stylish version of Denny's, except with better food, fresher pastries, and significantly more polished presentation. Now to be fair, this is not necessarily the kind of breakfast that completely changes your life forever. But it absolutely is several levels above ordinary diner food. My husband and I both ordered steak and eggs along with a large serving of bread and butter to share because apparently we believe carbohydrates are an important emotional support system while jet lagged. I ordered my eggs scrambled while my husband went with over easy. The breakfast potatoes were fresh, flavorful, and wonderfully prepared. The steak itself was a bit overdone for my personal taste. My husband actually enjoys steak prepared more thoroughly for breakfast dishes, but I have always preferred at least a little pink or redness remaining no matter how small the cut may be. The real star for me, however, was the bread. Warm, fragrant, slightly crumbly, and absolutely wonderful once the butter slowly melted into every crevice. There is something deeply comforting about fresh bread early in the morning while sitting in a quiet cafe halfway around the world watching a city wake up around you. Now the one surprise during this visit was the service. Because Filipino hospitality is usually exceptional. Truly exceptional. In fact, some of the best service experiences my husband and I have ever had anywhere in the world have been in the Philippines. This particular morning, however, things felt a little slower and less attentive than what we are normally accustomed to there. Nothing terrible at all -- the cafe was extremely busy -- but it did stand out compared to the typically warm and highly attentive Filipino dining experience we have come to expect. Overall though, it was still a very enjoyable breakfast and a wonderful way to begin the day. Or technically... begin the day in Manila while our bodies were fully convinced it was bedtime back in Sioux Falls. Full disclosure - I just had the pastries to go/take out. Without exception all of them were great, especially with the layered flaky pastry croissant items you can taste the butter in each layer even with the icing on top. Some had custard fillings , those were Devine - you can taste the quality. I ate the pastries over a span of 3 days and they were still borderline flaky. The only drawback is the pricing. Stopped by here twice or three times while staying in the area. As you can see below their pastries are out of this world. They have so many from basic cookie to whole cakes. We ordered so many things at once. They also carry lattes and fresh juices. Their waffle with fresh fruits on top ( banana , mango & strawberries ) it might be different when you go because of seasonal but man this was a delicious waffle , didn't need syrup. The steak with egg and garlic rice was so flavorful and addicting. The meat was made perfect and the over easy egg was top notched. The mango danish was my favorite here. The service was always kind and pleasant. The restaurant itself is so cute with bricks and cute lettering. I did see photos of pizza when scrolling through on Yelp, but when I asked the waiter about it, they seemed confused and mentioned it wasn't on the menu--so don't count on pizza here! But everything we had was fresh and well-prepared. I tried some bread with garlic parsley butter, but the parsley flavor was a little too strong for my taste. The Japanese egg salad sandwich was decent, light, and satisfying. I was happy about the waffle--it had loads of fruit and actually came with syrup! This made me super happy because I had visited Wildflour's sister restaurant, George and Onnie's, where they serve ube waffles but don't have any syrup in-house to go with it, which was a bit of a letdown when I went. However, even though the mango was fresh and naturally sweet, I would not order this again due to the bread being a letdown - it was not toasted at all and very chewy. My cousin in laws did not disappoint when they recommended this place during my two week visit in the BGC area of Manila. BGC itself is very up and coming, especially for tourists, so it's a real good location to be around foods that you're more familiar with. Wildflour cafe offered traditional Filipino breakfast to the typical eggs and bacon to freshly baked croissants and muffins to the healthier option of chia bowls. It's 'pricy' compared to other places for breakfast but I loved coming here. The decor of the restaurant was cute- very chic and the food was absolutely delicious. I had their chia bowl which was SO good that I tried creating it at home (total fail), but the fruits that were thrown on top was so juicy and sweet that it made a, what could be considered boring, bowl of chia seeds delicious! The chia mix alone was perfect. The consistency of the chia mixed with coconut and almond milk, really brought everything together. Since I came here twice for breakfast, I also ordered the typical eggs and sausage dish which was MORE than enough. It comes with scrambled eggs (they don't ask how you like your eggs), a side of potatoes, and two pieces of sausage and bread. Everything was just so good (not sure if it's because I was craving an 'American' breakfast). Nonetheless, I highly recommend this to tourist visiting. Additionally, when my parents received their food, it took the kitchen and servers 25 min to deliver my food, after they delivered theirs.
