It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

The road quickly turned to 'rugged', but as the AT sign says is regularly maintained by AT volunteers to move tree limbs, rocks, etc out of your way. There is a small parking area at the trail head at the foot of the Blackburn Cottage. This is truly a magical place deep in the forest of the Catoctin Mountains. The views while coming DOWN are amazing. There is some 'trash' on the road going up which appears to be an abandoned home. But, you will find this place well worth the effort. An all wheel drive car (We have a Subaru) is helpful as the road is VERY rugged. Thanks to the crew that keeps it open, there's even a donation bank to donate for road stone etc. Love this place.

The bathhouse was clean and had hot water. Most campsites only have lukewarm or cold water. There were also an abundance of toilet facilities and they were well maintained/cleaned. The view of the Potomac was breathtaking and the only downfall was that the camping sites are relatively close to each other both on the mountain and at the river's edge. I do recommend this center, however, and we will likely return when back in the area!

Located by the Patuxent River with a breathtaking view, Endeavor Point, is a ridden gem with campground, private beaches you can swim, a huge fishing pier, and cottages for rentals. From the moment you step onto the grounds of this place you feel your entire body relaxing. It is an amazing experience! I rented a cottage (Mermaid Folly) for the weekend. The place was very well furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining room furniture, very comfortable beds with soft linens, clean baths with soft towels. In general, the place was very clean, well decorated, and very functional. What I loved the most about the cottage was the balcony with a fantastic view, sitting outside under the tree close to the water, and listening to the waves breaking by the river shore. I also loved my walks in the mornings and afternoons by the breezy beaches and pier watching people fishing, the sunrising, and the sunset. I strongly recommend Endeavor Point if you want to just relax on a visit during the day, if you like camping overnight, or staying in a very comfortable cottage over the weekend.

My 10 yr old daughter just returned from her first "Camp Highroads" sleepaway camp... and she had a…read moreblast. She'd been there before, with a YMCA day camp; and also on a field trip with school. But this year she and 3 friends decided to all do the sleep away camp together... and it sounds like it was the experience of a lifetime. I could tell when I picked her up that she really loved it - she was hugging the counselors and genuinely sorry to be leaving. She chattered the whole way home about the experiences... horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, creek hiking (which, she emphasizes, is very different), sleep outs (which is sleeping outside under the stars), swimming (in a pool), playing games, fishing, ziplining, archery and more. Whoa! And with 3 of her best friends. What could be better. The typical sleeping arrangements (when you're not doing a sleep out) were 6 girls in a cabin with one female chaperone. (It is a co-ed camp, but boys have separate sleeping quarters). Apparently the exact arrangements vary by groups/ages. And yes, they had a rat one night and a mouse a few times, in the cabin. There are separate bath houses. It's rustic. No AC. There's a great story about a mouse in the bathhouse and her sitting on the toilet screaming.... (I am probably not supposed to share that story, but it's funny.) It's definitely camping. It is a Christian based camp, and there are some Bible lessons. While she did confirm that, it didn't really hit the "highlights" reel. Overall, it sounds to me like a classic sleep away summer camp with all the elements of adventure you'd hope for, only better. She can not wait to go back next year.

I am deeply disturbed by how Camp Highroad handled a serious health and safety incident involving…read moremy seven-year-old daughter. My daughter attended Pioneer Camp during the July heat. When I picked her up after approximately eight hours at camp, she was visibly lethargic, looked unwell, and repeatedly begged me for water. She immediately drank an entire 24-ounce bottle and was later taken to the emergency room for dehydration and heat-related symptoms. My daughter told me that she did not have her water bottle that day, repeatedly asked her counselor for water, and was told there were no cups available. Camp leadership later gave me a completely different account, stating that staff repeatedly offered her extra water bottles and that she refused every one of them. I was not present during the camp day, so I cannot personally say which account camp leadership believes is accurate. What I know firsthand is the condition in which my seven-year-old child was returned to me. Even accepting the camp's version, I cannot understand how staff responsible for supervising a young child during outdoor summer activities could allegedly watch her repeatedly refuse water throughout an entire day and take no further action. No one contacted me. No one reported a hydration concern at pickup. No one sought medical assistance. My child was simply returned to me lethargic, desperately thirsty, and sick enough to require an emergency room visit. I initially approached the camp privately because our family had loved Camp Highroad, my daughter cared for her counselor, and I genuinely wanted to understand what had gone wrong and how the camp would prevent it from happening again. Instead, camp leadership repeatedly stated that every safety protocol had been followed, relied on a liability waiver, refused responsibility for the hospital bill, and would not acknowledge that any breakdown had occurred. The camp did refund the week's tuition. This is not about attacking an individual counselor or damaging anyone's reputation. It is about whether the adults entrusted with a seven-year-old child took appropriate steps to ensure she remained hydrated and medically safe during a long day of outdoor activities in extreme summer heat. Parents should know how this incident occurred, the condition in which my child was returned to me, and how leadership responded when I raised the concern. Based on our experience, I no longer trust Camp Highroad to protect my daughter's basic health and safety.

There are no hot showers, however, there is one outdoor enclosed shower that is amazing. There are men and woman's restrooms, grills, fire pits, bonfire location, and even a pavilion that's able to be rented. There is even good WiFi, when in the WiFi zone. Everything is very clean and well tended to! Probably the cleanest campground we've ever been to. Mark, the owner, is very helpful, thorough, and takes great pride in Camp Cacapon. This would be the perfect location for a wedding, group camping trip or just a nice quiet getaway!

Make sure when visiting the campgrounds that you have a lantern available as the units are significantly darker than you might expect. Magnolia was very clean on the interior. At the exterior, the landscape slopes toward the cottage more than we thought was comfortable. The showers and dishwashing facilities were in good condition. This region generally has quite a few different attractions for nature lovers including a long hike along the Appalachian trail nearby and proximity to quaint small towns. Last, but definitely not least, Nick and his partner were among the most accommodating and friendly hosts one could ask for. When we had difficulty setting a campfire they generously gifted us some leftover materials to start our fire and advised us on best practices! We recommend that anyone interested in having a weekend away in nature investigate the Treehouse camp!

C & O Canal Tow Path nearby? It is right off the tow path. Plus parking is onsite. Minutes away from the city to feel like you're in a remote area of nature, but close enough if you need to get back to the city in 30 minutes. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.
