You can sit down on the rock ledges and look at the incredible panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is a small parking lot. It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

Our kids had a blast doing the gem mining, which was a fun bonus after a day of sightseeing. The location is hard to beat if you're visiting Washington, DC. It made getting into the city each day easy and convenient. We didn't get to enjoy many of the campground's amenities because we spent most of our time exploring DC, but based on everything we experienced, we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

Oh, did I not mention the water isn't hot? Also while I'm on the subject of bathrooms, make sure before you sit down you have checked to see if there is toilet paper. A little pro tip there from an unfortunate experience. But like I said not a bad place. Lots of tall trees, a swimming pool, 1960's era swing set. Two ponds with an abundance of turtles. All of those are nice because they don't have wifi. Imagine that no wifi. So, you know two stars. But then, hey I got the distinct impression they don't want more people.

They have a giant lake for fishing, you can fish from the dock areas or bring or rent a non-gas powered boat. You can also rent a canoe or paddle boat but all the rental stuff is only open during spring/summer They have a 5 mile trail along the lake that's a nice walk but can be crowded when the weather is good and pay attention since the trail entrance isn't marked as clearly as it could be. They also have mini golf, a train, playgrounds and some other stuff. It's free for Fairfax County residents (glad we're getting something for our taxes) and $10 for everyone else but of course the rentals, mini golf, train, etc. cost extra. There's a decent amount of parking but go early on a nice day or you might have a hard time grabbing a spot. I'll come back here for sure to walk the trail and maybe do a little fishing or rent a boat

This open field brings the sun out onto you, and it's a preference for a more forestry like site. It works for get togethers with friends. Good fishing area too. The floating is decent. They will get you where you need to be, for a quite reasonable cost. The Shenandoah River is beautiful, and you might see the bald eagles. There aren't any really crazy rapids, but that might be more desirable to the masses. I like the camp staff here, as they are polite and friendly.

Extremely disappointing customer service…read more I'm leaving this review because the way Watermelon Park handled a very minor fence repair was extremely disappointing. During our stay, I accidentally broke a fence board. I immediately brought it to their attention, and I was told not to worry about it. I had originally offered to replace it myself, but honestly, after being told not to worry about it, I forgot about it. When we went to check out, I was presented with a $150 charge for the damaged board. I called to ask about the charge and wanted to understand where the $150 was coming from. I was told it included the cost of the board, someone's gas/travel to pick it up, labor to replace it, and the cost of a special stain. I asked for an itemized breakdown, but they refused to provide one. What made the situation even more frustrating was that during the conversation, they acknowledged that the board hadn't even been stained yet and that they still had to do that. At the time I called, I was actually at Lowe's. I offered to simply purchase the replacement board myself and bring it directly to the park, just as I had originally offered to do. I was told no--that I had to pay the full $150. I completely understand being responsible for damage that I caused. I'm not disputing that. What I have a problem with is being charged $150 for a board that costs $15.99, being refused an itemized bill, and being denied the opportunity to simply replace the board myself. I wasn't trying to get out of paying for the damage. I was literally standing in Lowe's ready to buy the replacement myself. Mistakes happen, and I take responsibility for mine. But the way Watermelon Park handled this left a really bad impression. A simple $15.99 fence board could have been resolved easily and reasonably, but instead I was told I had no choice but to pay $150. If you stay here, I'd recommend documenting any damage immediately and getting any charges explained in writing. The amount isn't what bothers me nearly as much as the way the situation was handled and the complete unwillingness to work with me on a reasonable solution.

A bit of a mixed bag for me at Cunningham Falls…read more.. I was excited to find a listing of parks that supposedly had wheelchair accessible trails. I've never been to Cunningham Falls before and the idea of seeing a waterfall seemed lovely. However, the accessible boardwalk has strips on pretty much everything board which made me feel like I was riding a very angry horse. Each bump shot pain up my spine. I'm writing this a day later and I still hurt, and I think I'm a pretty tough chick... and the view of the falls was mostly blocked and not worth the actual pain. The Falls is more like a small stream of water that splashes down some rocks. It's a soothing noise but I was expecting something more grandiose... I suppose I could blame climate change. Most of the old stream beds are dry. We also checked out the "south beach" which I enjoyed. There's plenty of pavement, and packed gravel. I couldn't get close to the water, but that's okay because it was a sunny day and I prefer to stick to the shade. I was impressed by the fact that every picnic table has a grill nearby. If I lived closer I'd like to think I'd come to the south beach often, hide in the trees near the river, grill something delicious... but I was a several hours long trip from Dundalk, so it's unlikely that I'll return. It was a nice day-trip though. I don't regret going.

So now you dictate when I can RV? But when asking prices you cant also say hay, we don't open til mid April? Na, there are a lot of RV sites in this area and youll have to do better if you want my business! Also note that if you stay here you'll have no sewer hookup. You have to drive your RV to the black tank dump station. Like who wants to pack up their camper every few days to dump the black tank then reset it up!

They even have a dog park. The owner is awesome. He's very responsive to the campers. He's very courteous, respectful. This great place to go & get away from civilization. We definitely recommend it.
