We asked a man where to eat BBQ, he said here. Down from the Qick Trip we stop at off I-40, Sallisaw. Guessing maybe not alot of choices. The chopped beef was strange, really juicy. Not sure if runny sauce or grease or what. Husband was hungry and ate his but didn't like it. I took about 3 bites and said nope! Baked beans were maybe an ok ? Strange meat maybe in them. Last time I was here was in the 1980's. Was in the area today so I decided to check it out. Just as I remembered it. Full parking lot at 1:30pm. Ordered a chopped beef sandwich with medium sauce and a small baked beans. Beans were really good. Sandwich was a very generous portion and "pretty good". I'll try it again and get the ribs. I've been coming here since I was a child and that was a long time ago. it's been a staple in the area for many years. Sometimes its great and sometimes its good. I'll go in the order of "what I liked the most" A. the BBQ beans are really good. nice spice, sweetness, has a nice amount of meat in it. B. The "Hot" BBQ sauce is very nice. its vinegary but I tend to like the way the heat matches with it. One of the best sauces I've had. C. The serving amount was very generous I could have made two sandwiches easy with the portion. I am usually very satisfied when I go but this time wasn't the best experience. The meat was really dry. it broke apart in my plate. Usually spot on this time no bueno on the meat. I'm sure the problem will be fixed. Expected brisket and got thinly sliced roast beef. That is my fault for assuming and not paying attention to the menu. The meat being dry and lacking any sort of flavor is what prompts this rating. For the last 3 years I passed this place longingly looking at it as I passed by due to not having time at the moment to stop and eat. I've heard tales about they had the most delicious barbecue in Oklahoma. The exterior of the place is awesome and takes you back to the old days, all wood with delicious smells oozing out of it. You know I'm excited. 6 bucks for a sandwich and 3.25 per rib. Plus a soda. The ribs were massive and really tasty. The barbecue sauce was good. The price was nice. But the beef sandwich. A super friendly young girl told us about the special for $8.95 and that we could get a bag of chips for an extra dollar. I ordered the mild spiced pulled pork sandwich and my husband got the spicy brisket. You pour your own drink from the flu Ron into a styrofoam cup but I want you to know they only have Sweet Tea for the tea choices! Truly typical southern bbq. My sandwich was not even warm to touch but it was tasty as I added the side of beans into the sandwich spread. My husband's sandwich was warm but not spicy enough. He went back to get more sauce. If you are driving on highway 40 it's worth a stop to this local joint even just to see all the pictures of the famous guest on the walls. I was with my Oklahoma friends and they insisted we come here for lunch while we were still in Poteau. I couldn't understand why we had to wait for an hour for a barbecue when their was plenty of barbecue places in Poteau. I tried snacking on the way there and they insisted that I stopped so that I would be hungry when I get there. Was I ever glad I listened to their advice. We got the combination meal and it was a lot of food. The food was EXCELLENT, taste was definitely worth the wait. The price was reasonable and the service was nice. After a lot of hyped up reviews over Wildhorse BBQ I went there to grab some BBQ to-go and here is my experience. Firstly, there seems to be a big misconception of what pork ribs are. Thinking I ordered spare ribs or baby backs, I care home disappointed to see that I had actually gotten a bone-in pork loin. Not only was the "rack" a pork loin I got the front cut where it is all white meat. It was sawdust dry with no hint of smoke and a poor pink ring that reminds me that I was at a BBQ restaurant There was inconsistent seasoning on the product but that doesn't matter, that doesn't fix dry meat. So there goes 5lbs of ribs. I also ordered sliced brisket. Instead I got what looks like shaved roast beef leftovers from a week beforehand. Their brisket also had no smoke flavor nor a hint that it was even smoked. If I known this was what I was getting I would be better off ordering from a supermarket deli. So there goes a pound of "brisket". Next item; smoked bologna. The only thing smoked about this bologna was from the Oscar Meyer factory the bologna came from. You can't mess up smoked bologna but you can here. I also got all three of their Mountain BBQ sauce. Mild, medium, hot. The consistency of this sauce was runny with no body. To each our own with the sauce. The flavor of the sauce had potential. It needs to a lot of "tightening" to concentrate the flavor and maybe then it would be OK. As for the flavor differences, the mild and medium tasted the same. The hot BBQ sauce had an annoying tingling sensation from some of the peppers they added but it was far from hot. Ive had black pepper spicier than their hot BBQ sauce and if you're looking for something spicy you're better off with a bag of flamin' hot Cheetos. Their beans were not good. I've also hear people recommending their beans as the best they've ever had. Do yourself a favor and buy the shortcut of Bushes Best beans from your local grocery store if you want a bean fix. Anyone saying this place is good has probably had a product from the past when they may of truly had good BBQ back in 1965. But from my experience this is the worst BBQ joint I've ever been to. It doesn't take a pit master to make "good BBQ". I'm not expecting a 2 star Michelin meal but don't go here with high expectations. The best thing here was the .25cent pickled jalapeño peppers. The atmosphere of the place looked dusty but has the character of a true smokehouse. It's a shame because the product of the kitchen did not fit the culture of the building. The lady at the counter was great but that's where the experience stopped. Anyone that says this place is good likes bland food. I'm not frugal nor do I possess a white color job with a six -figure income, but I regret every dollar of the $60 dollars I spent here. read more

I had heard nothing but good reviews for their food so I decided to drive out of my way to try them out. I was severely disappointed. The service was fast and the help was friendly. The portion of the sandwich was very generous. The beans, not so much. The meat lacked in smoke taste and flavor. I am not sure what (if any) sauce was used but the sandwich was soaked so bad into the bread it was almost impossible to eat with your hands. The beans could use some smoke flavor. I ate half of the sandwich and threw the other half away. There just wasn't any part of the meal I would want to go back for. How can you ruin a pickle? I don't know but it was awful. Wow! Probably the best pork ribs I've ever had. Delicious. The beans were half of the meal and were cooked to perfection. Mild BBQ sauce was great, complete with shredded bits of chopped brisket and just the right amount of heat. The atmosphere is awesome, so 'Merica. Haha The way they cut the ribs is so unique, the smoked country style ribs are Oklahoma's true BBQ identity. "NAMP #423 is a country style rib. According to the technical definition, these ribs are made from the rib end of the loin usually with 4 or 5 rib bones. Warning!!!!! Do not use yelp to navigate to this restaurant. It is nowhere near the destination marked on the map. Search for White Horse Estates in Sallisaw, OK. The estates are on the west side of hwy 59, and the restaurant is directly across hwy 59 on the east side (look for the white sign - look close, as it is not the easiest to see). OK....now that the directions are taken care of, time to get to the meat of the review (pun intended). Outside - rustic, good-sized restaurant sitting up on the side of a hill. Plenty of parking, and truck/trailer accessible. Inside - Very spacious and properly decorated restaurant with a main (coffee shop style) dining area. It, also, has 2 semi-private dining areas perfect for family style or small party dining (see pictures). Food - The modest menu is more than adequate. Consisting of pork ribs and beef slow smoked to perfection. The smoke ring and mahogany color is the first clue that you about to taste something amazing. The only reason I dropped a star, is that they use absolutely no seasoning at all. Trust me..... it only needs a little salt, and I know how to use a salt shaker. Any other seasonings would have detracted from the beautiful and clean smoke flavor. It is not only tasty, but tender and moist. The only other choice is if you want beans. Get them!!! After I wrote the review below we waited 3 weeks and went back midweek to try Wildhorse at the urging of friends. Wildhorse was much improved on the second visit but remarkable it isn't. The ribs were real bone-in rib chops, well smoked with a definite smoke bark on the exposed bone. The brisket was smoked and much more moist (fresh) than on the first visit. I'm glad it was so much better as I utterly hate to post a negative review. I'd rather leave no review at all. Glad to see it wasn't at all like the first visit. Warning- the hot BBQ sauce is damned hot! Be forewarned but it's solid. Perhaps Saturday is a bad or "off" day, but after so many friends have told us the beans at Wildhorse were to die for we drove to Sallisaw to find out. What we found was a real disappointment. The friendly young lady at the counter was great but that's where it ends. The food was really regrettable. We both had the combo plate, rib & sliced brisket with bun & beans. First the sliced meat: sliced at least the day before, it was dry, crumbly and a uniform gray color. No flavor and no sign it had ever seen a smoker, as in NO reddish rim nor any smoke or rub flavor whatsoever. Brisket slow smoked at low temp for hours this was not. I'll hazard a guess that it was dry baked in an oven and sliced the next day, definitely not BBQ brisket. The "rib" we each had were identical. 3/4" slice of boneless pork loin with a small amount of smoke evident on the outside. No flavor again but at least it wasn't yesterday's production. Made me pine for anyplace but here. The atmosphere is true BBQ shack, clean and true to character. Overall if you're going to be a BBQ restaurant at least make a trip to Dallas or Kansas City and learn from the masters in any of a hundred BBQ restaurants how to smoke meat and put out a respectable product.
