A technician from Five Star was called by my neighbor to address a drainage backup on shared piping in our building. Before starting, the technician explicitly acknowledged that using a stiff cable could break the pipe and that a flexible cable should be used instead. Despite this, he ran the drain snake in the wrong direction--into my adjacent unit, where there was nothing more than a slow drain--and proceeded to break my pipe under my sink. Rather than escalating the mistake to a senior supervisor, the technician attempted a temporary fix using parts purchased from Home Depot. He installed the replacement improperly and left my unit with an active leak that did not exist before he arrived. To make matters worse, the original drainage issue on my neighbor's side remained completely unresolved. When the company was notified that their technician had caused property damage, leaks on both sides of the shared wall and failed to solve the initial problem, Five Star's dispatch made the baffling decision to send the exact same technician back to the job site a second time. Sending a technician who clearly lacked the expertise for this type of repair--not once, but twice--demonstrates a concerning disregard for workmanship, customer safety, and property protection. Leaving a homeowner with an active plumbing leak caused by your own staff is unacceptable. I strongly advise against hiring Five Star Home Services for any complex or shared plumbing issues.

They sent out another technician (Blake) who had a device that allowed him to locate the leak. It was in the cooling system and the unit needed to be replaced. The next day they found the cooling system was under warranty, located a system locally and then installed it. They gave me a quote for the labor which the warranty did not cover. Matt came out that evening and installed the new cooling system. All three technicians were outstanding and knowledgeable and were courteous and did their jobs. Matt who installed the new system was the best technician I have ever seen. Great company with great employees. They did not try to upsell you on anything and even their office researched and found and coordinated the warranty process for us. Our a/c unit was only two years old in a new build house.

I had a heat pump and it was replaced with an A/C only unit last June…read more (He said he didn't realize we had a heat pump but it would be fine) It ran non-stop for a month while I contacted him repeatedly and got excuse after excuse for why he couldn't make it when he said he would be there. He finally came out and told me it was still wired for a heat pump. After that the unit would freeze up inside and out. He said he would be out to check it....in July 2018, I'm still waiting. I got through most of the winter because we had a pellet stove. The pellet stove stopped working and we had to use the furnace and my electric bill was $500 for one month. And now it's freezing up again.

Back in February we had our AC and Furnace replaced by Backus Heating and Cooling (Company's name…read moreis now J & M Heating and Cooling). Everything started out fine until I gave them the required money to purchase the equipment. Then it was a challenge getting them out, always had excuses on why they couldn't make it or even better not showing up and not communicating. Quality of work was not to par, the pvc drain line had to be fixed 3 times first time looked like it was cut with a butter knife. They set the ac unit in place after cutting the old lines and never hooked ac unit up, they told me it's better to hook it up when it's warmer but they never capped the copper lines so moisture got into the lines. I ended up paying another company in May to finish hooking up my ac. I was suppose to receive a new ac pad, ac disconnect and ac cover which I never received, the other company that finished the job provided it. Backus offered a refund for unfinished work back in April but I have still yet to receive any refund. They will not reply to any of my recent communications. I know of one other family that is also very dissatisfied, I am curious how many others are going through similar situation with this company. So to end this review, I am very dissatisfied with my experience and quality of work from Backus Heating and Cooling. I refuse to ever use/refer them ever again. If you are looking for Heating and Cooling work use caution on who you pick.
