I am writing this post on behalf of my sister Mary Jo Cronin. She adopted a cat on 2/27 at the Will County Humane Society. They required a 6 day background check on human but we wish they would have done the same on the cat. They provided a free visit. The cat had a slight fever and was taken Crossroads Animal Hospital on Caton Farm Road on 3/2. They inspected the cat and they gave a shot. The vet never opened the cats mouth. On 3/19 exam, the cat was taken to a clinic closer to home. Dr Jenny Kuhn at Mokena Animal Clinic reported that the cat had already lost 5 teeth and recommended extraction of 17 more. Surgery was performed on 4/9. We are grateful that Dr Jenny Kuhn intervened for the sweet cat. We are also grateful that they only charged $400 to extract all of the infected teeth. But the process prior to her was less than humane or compassionate. We hope this story encourages the Will County Humane Society to watch who they partner with for care of the animals they are trying to protect. If Mary Jo had not persisted, the cat could have died from the infected teeth. As a new cat owner, she didn't think to try check teeth and gums. read more

Had a great experience here, although everytime I come here I want to leave with a dog so it's very difficult. We have two of the most loving adorable cuddly doggos in the entire world. I know everyone thinks that about their fur babies but totally true in our case. I love that this is a no kill shelter and there is a process for getting an animal an application and an home visit so people can't just walk in and take a dog home on a whim. Everyone was kind and helpful talking us through the process. We even come back as much as we can to pet and talk to the little angels when we can. One of our dogs was abused in the past and I am so thankful we were able to give her a loving home. She litterly smiles and loves to cuddle with us and our other dog Jack as much she can. So if your serious about getting a dog or cat that you will love forever, not just a couple months than you should stop on by. Spay and neuter your pets!!!! There are so many without a home. Also remember if you ever see or suspect any type of animal abuse or neglect please call the Anti Cruelty Society 312-645-8090 or 911 it's now a federal offense! read more

Will County Humane Society - Our sweet girl! - Animal Shelters Near Me - Shorewood, Illinois

While what I think the humane society is doing for animals is great. My experience walking in there yesterday, left a bad taste in my mouth & a bad smell in my nose. My husband & I are looking for a rabbit for our daughter. Shhh it's a surprise~ anyway. We walked in the door yesterday to a horrifically strong stink~ animal pee! Okay so you have animals, we can possibly over look that. I told the older lady at the front counter why we were there. She points to the white rabbit in the too small of a cage next to the front door & tells us that's all they have. And then just stares at us. She doesn't tell us about the rabbit~ male, female, age~ nothing. Just stares. Ok so now we are officially uncomfortable & just turn around and walk out. We really just wanted to help an animal out & make our child happy. But obviously this isn't the place for us to find one. So we just keep looking. read more

We had to put down our German Shepard- Shepard or maybe coonhound due to leukemia. He was 11 years old and he always listened. I been searching all over and this morningI found the german shepard- collie at This facility that looks exactly like our dog except his color. I called and was told can't adopt to you because you live more than 45 minutes from us in Galena IL. We are dog people and know how to treat a dog. I even told the lady I pay her way up if she wanted to do dog checks. She said she they dodog checks and that is why and wonder how many people let her in. We give our dogs: big back yard run of the house 60 x 12 deck LL BEAM MEMORY FOAM BED Everyone saying rescue a dog so we tried but these people said no. I would not recommend these people to anyone. read more

My family and I went in to adopt a kitty for our daughters birthday. Staff was quite rude initially. Friendly Up a bit not much. But what the the real problem is when we got declined for adoption and how rude they were about it. We have never had a cat and didn't know that declawing was looked down upon. Just grew up in family with declawed cats. So we said we wouldn't declaw her and they said there was "nothing" they could do and that we could never apply there again. For one question we didn't know about and to ruin my daughters birthday. Thanks Keep "giving" pets new homes. ‍ read more

I came in to adopt a kitten on July 10, and was spoken to very rudely by a woman who claimed to be the manager. We had spoken to a staff member earlier in the week about Sophie (the cat we were interested in) and she said she was going to contact her manager and give us a call back and we were never contacted back. I have an elderly 80-year-old mother that does not get around very easily but was told she needed to be there after explaining to the staff member our situation we were still denied. We have now gone and adopted a kitten from a company that didn't give us a hard time. read more

BEWARE OF WILL COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY! I went there on Sun searching for a small family dog for my 14 yr old daughter. I had already been to 3 other shelters in search of a good match for our family and home. As we walked through we fell in love with a little female who was all of 4 lbs full size. We were delighted. I asked about the adoption process and was told an application CANNOT be filled out until they see the animal interact with everyone who lives in the home. This was 1 hour before they closed. I called a family member and begged them to bring my two sons who were not present up to the shelter ASAP. They were 30 minutes away. I told the staff my other children were enroute and asked about the adoption application. Again I was denied stating they needed to see everybody first. When my children arrived I awoke my 2 yr old from his nap so the staff could see all members of my household interacting with the dog. By that point my daughter and I had spent an hour walking this dog, holding it and simply bonding. Let me tell you this dog was licking all of us and my 2 year old was so gentle and delicate. Everyone was getting along wonderfully. The shelter was closing so I stated we wanted to adopt the dog can we fill out the application. Again I was denied stating that it was too close to closing time. I was told to come in at opening, 12 noon, on Tues their next business day to fill out the application. Monday I rearranged my schedule with my sons day care and my office so that I could get to the shelter asap on Tues. My coworker could not come in any earlier than 2pm on Tues. I called the shelter on Mon when they were closed and left a message stating I would be there about 2 pm and would fill out the papers. I left my phone number so they could contact me if need be. I wanted to reassure the shelter that we were indeed still planning on adopting the dog. I understand that people say they will adopt and are never heard from again causing a possible loss for said animal to be adopted by another family. This was not the case! My 3 older children came to work with me on Tues morning and sat in the office for 4 hours so that we wouldn't waste any time getting to the shelter. When we arrived at the shelter we saw a sign stating Adoption Pending by the dog we wanted. The lady who I had been dealing with the entire time told us that the dog was already being adopted. I asked her how that was possible and she responded you hadn't filled out the papers. I stated she had REFUSED to give me the papers. This lady then said that it had been too late in the day, let me remind you we were there for an entire hour playing with the dog. I explained I had left a message stating the specific time I would be in ( which was 2.5 hours after opening ) and that she knew we wanted this dog. The lady simply said with a straight, uncaring glare , The papers weren't filled out. I told you to come at noon. I responded saying people have to work in order to take care of an animal and I called to give notice. She then walked away!!!! I am sorry but I did everything in my power. I am a single mom and as such do not have as much flexibility as some. The VERY LEAST this inept, ignorant, uncaring woman could have done was CALL ME and let me know the dog was adopted out from under us. I drove my 4 children 90 minutes in the car round trip with them all shattered and in tears on the way home. This shelter does not care what so ever for the PEOPLE who will be taking care of the animals they have. I am appalled and disgusted by their lack of professionalism. I hope this will at least save another family from the grief mine has gone through. read more

I went in to volunteer and was treated very poorly. The lady I spoke to did not ask me one question. She immediately went into saying I didn't have the right attire which I had old clothes on and sneakers. She then started commenting on my looks saying this isn't a beauty place. Good luck getting more volunteers if you keep treating people like that. read more

We rescued both of our dogs from this humane society. The staff is absolutely wonderful! Super nice and very helpful. They are a NO kill shelter and it seems most of the dogs are owner turn ins. The dogs are well cared for and come with all vaccinations, neuter/spay and microchip. They are passionate about caring for the animals and even do home visits to be sure the family and adoptee are the right fit for each other . I appreciate the fact that they don't just sell the dogs willy nilly to whoever walks through the door. It was comforting to see that they really care. Their fundraisers and events are always well organized as well. Love this place! read more

I got my little Skooter from there. He adopted me! The place and people were great and the process to adopt was quick, easy and fair. People should NEVER complain about that location. Those people do great work and bring joy to those animals not fortunate enough to be adopted. Thank you Will County Humane Society for all that you do!! read more

I was looking forward to visiting WCHS for 2-3 weeks and finally had the chance to visit. Getting out of the car, the woman instantly told us we couldn't adopt due to age; understandable. So we decided just to look since we made the trip there. She didn't seem very thrilled to see us. She even flat out told us "You have a 0% chance of adopting" before we had even walked through the doors. Just in general, didn't seem to be friendly. read more

My family and I after much thought and research decided to adopt a puppy we fell in love with named Joe, they told us to fill out the paperwork and that a would take a couple of days, someone then called and said we could not adopt because we never had a pet before. We we devastated. Couldn't make sense of it. They never visited our home or talk to us on being first time pet parents. If they don't allow people who never have a pet before to adopt they should state so on the application so we wouldn't have to go through this process. It is a very disappointing facility. We decided to adopt a dog from their already full facility. We own an American Staffordshire terrier whose ears we had cropped . We gave all documentation needed to show how well we take care or our pets. Our dog did have ear infection, which the vet suggest ear cropping can help with. Nonetheless we were denied from giving a dog a good home. This was due to a personal issue one of the staff members had with cropping. They did however previously allow this same dog to be adopted by someone who made the dog obese. Then that owner later died and she was back at the shelter. She needed a special diet and exercise to be healthy. Moral of the story is they will not allow you to adopt a dog if you had your dogs ears cropped. Little advice lie and they would never know. That way you can adopt a dog and give it great home without their personal prejudices from a staff member. Instead of telling us we were not eligible for adoption, because of a legal choice we made. They waited until my kids and family made 3 visits and brought a blanket to familiarize her with our scents. This was such a disappointment and bad choice on their end. We adopted a cat from the Humane Society in September and are already eager to adopt again. The staff at the Humane Society are absolutely wonderful. They answered all of our questions and provided great information. They are a No Kill Shelter that truly cares for each and every one of their animals. Our sweet kitten is happy and healthy. She was spayed right before we got her and all the vaccinations are up to date. The adoption fee directly supports the shelter and is very reasonable. I highly recommend the WCHS if you are interested in adopting a pet. We just adore our sweet new family member. read more

I have been a dog owner for many years and my beloved dog of 19 years passed away 6 months ago so after much thought I decided to adopt a dog. thinking that adopting one that needs a great home I went to the Shorewood humane society. Well I was treated very poorly and was told i'm too old to adopt a young dog! People don't waste your time going to this organization because they apparently pick and choose only certain people to give the go ahead to adopt! read more

I tried to adopt a puppy. It was the worst experience! I spent hours with this dog and I was turned down because I'm moving in a month! The board president interviewed me briefly and called me back the next day to say no. She LAUGHED when I asked if she was not going to allowed me to adopt the dog. She claims it was due to nervousness. I had to tell my 6 year old who spent so much time with this puppy we could not have him. It was devastating. I have adopted 2 dogs from them before the new rules took effect. I will NEVER go back to them. Before adopting go to social media, ask around. They have a terrible reputation! read more
