Ship Creek, adjacent to the hatchery, is where they have a salmon ladder to sort fish for egg collection located on public paths

I had an hour and a half to burn while headed to anchorage international airport and decided to learn why Alaska's sport fishing program is so successful. William Hernandez Fish Hatchery has an outstanding self guided, free, tour of the inside and outside facilities. They are state of the art, with impeccable cleanliness and organization. It was very informative and even more exciting with the salmon running in ship creek. If you have 30 minutes even, go check it out!!

    Where are the fish?

JBER, a combination of Army Fort Richardson and Air Force Elmendorf. Joint Base…read moreElemendorf-Richardson. I had the pleasure of staying her a few days while in Alaska on vacation at the Air Force TLF (Temporary Lodging Facilities) as a home base between stints in Seward and off base Hotels. I'm going to butcher a lot of the specifics because I'm not military. I was a dependent as a youth and this trip was planned for by my sister (Air Force) There is some redundancy on gates due to a combination of bases, but as we were still getting used to the 10:30pm summertime sunsets, most gates close early and without schedule/warning making entry slightly more difficult. There was an airshow when we arrived so the road closures and road blocks to keep public to certain areas of the base made a lot of back tracking. The main roads are well maintained, but parking lots are pretty much at the mercy of the extreme weather with some deep potholes. It's a pretty flat base and you can see planes take off in the distance from almost anywhere. The PX/BX is cool, reminds me of a Fred Meyer, but with a dedicated food court and some outside vendors. Commissary it's pretty basic. Gas is cheap probably due to the oil Alaska produces. The Burger King on base closes early even though we stocked the fridge at our housing. What I did make use of was the recreational facility. You can rent a hot tub there? Coolers, rain gear, bikes, fishing gear, archery gear for hunting, kind of whatever you need. It all was really cheap, if not free. I didn't explore too much because of the 100% security check and it's a big base and I didn't feel like biking around it too much. There was a bowling alley and a bar that's got limited schedule. It's a pretty cool base, but we had some issues with TLF and quality, but rec facility made up for it.

As a former AF wife stationed only in the south, I was a little jellly at all that crisp cold fresh air people get to breath in there. We stayed at the lodging for one night. Everyone was super friendly. Our room was huge for a great price.

It's a Chugach light but the MOA website says if you can't reach them or don't know whose light it is report it to them and they can relay it. The woman kept giving me a not my light not my problem attitude before telling me "if you would be quiet for five seconds and listen long enough to get some sense in your head-" Apparently the MOA couldn't be bothered to plow my roads (Sand Lake/Jewel Lake area) even once last winter and a neighbor had to do it, not they can't even be bothered to do anything about street lights.

Wow, what a scam. A…read morebastion of nickel-and-diming bureaucracy! Executive Summary: If you are moving to the Anchorage, the city will treat your unloading of personal goods in the exact same manner as if you were building a condo or opening a water main. Seriously, you need a right-of-way permit...you need to fill it out, and then you need to attach a map telling them where your moving trailer will rest. Oh, and you have to PAY to unload your goods as well. How much? $0.70/per square foot/per day. Since I only needed a day to unload it would cost me about $5. OK, not too bad right? Only problem is that there is a MINIMUM fee of $130. This kind of fee makes the banksters at the credit card companies look...well...kind by comparison. So I filled out all my permit paper work and was waiting to pickup my permit. Then I get a call from a permit inspector saying he "happened to be in the neighborhood" and that my permit was not posted on my moving container. He was correct, it wasn't. I had taken my lunch break to help the truck driver drop off the container and wasn't going to be able to pickup the permit till after I got off of work. The container had been there only a couple hours. Later that day I waited in 3 different lines for the right to pay $130 for my piece of paper allowing me to move into the city. I always thought of Alaska more as a "don't tread on me" type of state. But, if you want to move to Anchorage, expect lots of treading.
