Prior to my Mom entering…read moreinto this service, I had preconceived ideas about hospice as 'useful' but 'not something to be spoken about.' I could not have been more wrong. Dr. Joshi takes the time to meet with the family which is unprecedented in this field, and his kindness and serenity meant so much. Dindo Bustrillos was my Mom's nurse and it's hard to fully articulate how wonderful he was, is, and always will be!! His expert knowledge, compassion, patience, good humor, and beauty of spirit were there every day, and I mean EVERY day!! His medical knowledge is bar none - simply outstanding. And, his nurturing presence made such a huge difference as the days wore on and became more difficult. I don't know how Dindo is able to retain and exude joy and caring in such a difficult profession -- the fact that he can hold so much and help during the most harrowing times in such an impactful way is astounding. Thank you so very much to Dindo and Redwood Hospice for your help during the most difficult life transition I can imagine. I am forever grateful.

I wrote a lengthy review of this company a few days ago. unfortunately it will not let me add on…read morewhat I have to say today I spoke with a supervisor at Heartland Hospice today to complain about the things I had written in my post. She said she was familiar with my case because she had spoken to the woman who was suppose to call me on Sunday (she never did) and was told that I kept refusing to be admitted over the course of several days. I never spoke to this person so she must be confusing me with someone else or she is lying to this supervisor! I told the supervisor to read my post because it explained everything in detail as to what happened since I was discharged from the hospital on Friday to Monday when a nurse came out for the intake. Again, Saturday a man called and I told him I only wanted females to come to my home. He said a woman would call me on Sunday and she never did! Monday I called Heartland and they sent out an RN to do the intake. I told her I had to go to the hospital because of my swollen feet and ankes and the pain in my right foot. I thought I might have broken a bone. I was told I could not be a patient of Hospice if I went to the hospital. (I went to the hospital). From what the supervisor told me about what she was told by the woman who never called me, it was completely different from what I have just written. To top it off, yesterday, the man who picked up their equipment left the walker on my porch. It has been nothing but hassles from this company and I cannot recommend them.

In trying to get an adequate level of support for my mother, I spent a considerable amount of time researching and getting recommendations from a variety of organizations in Santa Cruz, Aptos and beyond. With other agencies, and I know well that my mother is no saint, I was regularly hearing complaints about "leaving the shift early," "not being able to do anything significant," and more. I did not hear anything like this with Familiar Surroundings. My mother deeply enjoyed her caregivers and working with the agency. Lexi Dennis was incredibly communicative with me and my mother to ensure my mother received care on days she was scheduled for (my mom wasn't always great at answering the door so Lexi would call to see if my mom was home and/or safe -- greatly appreciated!), and clarification in determining days she was no longer in need of care. The only issue was that there was an increase in hourly rate in dropping from 3 hours per shift to 2 hours, which I was unable to find articulated in their contract and wasn't communicated clearly prior to rate hike. In general, I would highly recommend giving FS a call to see if they could be a good fit for your caregiving needs.
