Prior to my Mom entering into this service, I had preconceived ideas about hospice as 'useful' but 'not something to be spoken about.' I could not have been more wrong. Dr. Joshi takes the time to meet with the family which is unprecedented in this field, and his kindness and serenity meant so much. Dindo Bustrillos was my Mom's nurse and it's hard to fully articulate how wonderful he was, is, and always will be!! His expert knowledge, compassion, patience, good humor, and beauty of spirit were there every day, and I mean EVERY day!! His medical knowledge is bar none - simply outstanding. And, his nurturing presence made such a huge difference as the days wore on and became more difficult. I was referred to Redwood Hospice from the local hospital where my father was getting care and transitioning to hospice care. We had to move very quickly as he was being discharged and it was quite stressful, but the Redwood team contacted me right away and recommended some care facilities that provided hospice care and we found a really wonderful place. Although my father passed shortly after he arrived at the care facility, the facility and the Redwood hospice provided wonderful care and made him comfortable and for that we will be forever grateful. This facility also provides constant follow ups just to see how our family is doing and whether we need grief counseling and support. My family had a brief time to benefit from Redwood Hospice services. We referred to them by Kaiser and I think it was one thing that Kaiser got right. From the moment we met with Jobel Usi, I knew we were in good hands. They were filling in for the Case Manager (this was late on a Friday night) and they actually answered my texts the next day, though not assigned to us. Jobel explained the services they could provide, what to expect, and quickly took over, ordering the supplies my aunt needed for her care and comfort. We had a long journey with her over the past 4 months and Jobel and their team were so helpful. After that meeting, Redwood took care of everything. They gave me peace and time to focus on my aunt instead of ordering equipment or trying to pick up medications. I want to also give a shout out to Dr. Stephens who was so compassionate and caring towards my aunt, to Penny Perkins, the nurse practitioner who cane out and made changes to increase my aunt's comfort immediately, and to the various nurses who visited. Redwood anticipated our needs before we did and sent a spiritual guide to visit us and offered the services of a social worker. This is an excellent group and were a breath of fresh air just when we were about to lose it-we were exhausted dealing with so many hospital and care facilities. Cannot say enough good things about Redwood Hospice. My dad had a series of strokes last winter and I honesty didn't even have the mental bandwidth to CONSIDER researching hospice options (so kudos to you for reading this). We were so fortunate to be referred to Redwood Hospice by my dad's memory care facility, Palo Alto Commons, in conjunction with Kelly Straight from SeniorDoc (who's also incredible), made the referral. The next day, Redwood Hospice came to meet with me and my husband to discuss my father's care. They are simply WONDERFUL. The kindest people. Literally everyone we encountered was fantastic. The ongoing communication we got from the entire team was great. Dindo (dad's head nurse) coordinated the care and always reached out to me with updates after he saw my dad, as did Ivy, his other nurse. They were great about calling and texting, which is much easier for me during the day. And my dad ADORED his health aide, Andaly. My dad is one of the people who actually graduated from hospice. But I still keep in touch with my dad's team to give them updates; they genuinely care for their patients (and their families) on a personal level. My dad has dementia, so it's likely that he'll need hospice in the future, and I will absolutely be reaching back out to Dindo and the team at Redwood Hospice. Being at a point where you're considering hospice is a tough place. Be assured that Redwood Hospice will be there to support both your loved one AND your family through it. read more

My husband was entered Hospice right before the December holidays, which may have accounted in part for the unevenness in care that we experienced. Redwood Hospice has some excellent nurses and nurse practitioners. Our case manager Stelamarie was a great resource, available in person and by phone when needed on M-F, 9-5, when she was on duty, and our admitting nurse practitioner, Gurpreet Kaur, was very available and helpful when needed. Both were caring and patient in helping us learn to manage the care process, which was largely a household responsibility. We also encountered many caring home health aides and weekend nurses but getting them scheduled was very difficult and the telephone dispatch system was often not well organized, especially on evenings and weekends. I often had to call multiple times to track down care providers and when they would show up when they did not arrive as scheduled. One day a nurse who was supposed to come at 9 am called late to say she would try to come by 12 and then at 3 and then at 5 said she was tied up with other calls and wasn't going to make it at all, but no one had stepped in to ensure we saw a nurse that day until I insisted that we get a night nurse to come attend to the medical needs that required a visit. The knowledge base of the many different care providers was variable and the extent to which they knew about my husband's case was also variable. We never saw Dr. Joshi over the 4 week period, despite repeated requests. Redwood Hospice has hired many caring people, some of whom are quite wonderful, but needs to work on its ability to organize their work and needs to ensure access to the physician who has been selected. read more

I don't even have the words to adequately express my gratitude to the nurses of Redwood Hospice. My dad was in the memory care wing of Palo Alto Commons (a senior living community) when we were able to start him on hospice care because of worsening symptoms related to his heart as well as his dementia. I believe that because of the excellent, compassionate care he received from the Redwood Hospice nurses -- which was adeptly coordinated with the work of the very kind and attentive "focused care" staff of PA Commons -- my father was able to have the most peaceful and painless death possible in our world. I especially want to thank Dindo, who led the nursing team for my dad. I always knew he was prioritizing my dad's comfort and monitoring his changes carefully. And he helped me more than I can say through his empathy and kindness, his calm demeanor, his responsiveness to my thoughts/suggestions about what my dad might need, his clear answers to my questions, and his guidance on what I'd likely witness when the end was near. He also tried to make sure I was taking care of myself in those last extra-difficult days, and he reached out to me after my dad's death -- when the pain of this life-changing loss felt intolerable -- with generous and heartfelt words that made me feel supported and seen. My veteran father came home on hospice. The original hospice team placed by the Veterans Affairs Hospital was utterly disorganized and chaotic. Within minutes of talking to Sarah J. at Redwood Hospice their overall approach and services given as well as structure of services play out, I knew my fathers care as well as families care would be priority and listened to. Within hours of contacting Redwood Hospice I had a Dr. Joshi, Nurse Janet and Ms. Sarah J come to our home and calmly go over services, schedules, game plan and execution in such an organized yet gently and understandable way to understand. My entire family (mother and 3 brothers) felt at ease knowing dads new team would offer him the compassionate he deserves. Amazing hospice . Chris Tran ,the marketing rep has done everything promptly when patients need to enroll in hospice . Their drs and nurses are stat with providing our patients what they need and they provide more visits for home health aid. Many of our patients provide us great feedback about their hospice experience and staff. A great difference with this hospice is the dr visits patients weekly which most hospices can't provide . Chris has also been instrumental in finding nursing home placement for some of our patients which many hospices can't do . When my husband required in-home hospice care, a friend recommended Redwood Hospice. I am so grateful that she did. As soon as I contacted them, they sent team members over within hours to discuss our needs and options. They were very kind and understanding. The nurse assigned to our case, Dindo, was the most compassionate, caring person I have ever met. He tried to address and provide solutions to every problem we encountered. My husband was on hospice care for four months, and his needs were many and often complicated. We found that all the other employees we spoke with were also very patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. The moment we decided to transition from the hospital to hospice, the whole team at Redwood came together to help me in an amazingly empathetic and efficient way. Everything was set up at home in matter of hours from bed to oxygen to supplies to transportation. Ariane was simply amazing. When we got home, I needed a ton of help to get my wife comfortable and settle down. Dindo was already waiting outside our house and he helped me with so many things so late in the day. The meds were delivered at doorstep. Supplies were ready. Dindo was available on text any hours. Dr. Joshi came next day and he was amazing. So much understanding and love. Tony gave my wife the best cleaning and amazing shampoo in more than few weeks. Such lovely heart and care. That was the last shampoo she got. Diane was such an amazing nurse. I called Redwood Hospice 1-800-825-8556 and talked to Chris to gather information about there service that they could provide for my mom. She will need a lot of care when she is release from the hospital. I did not tell him that I was going to use there services at this time. But I gave him (Chris) information about my mom. He decide to call the hospital where my mom is at and the hospital assumed that we were going to use there services. I can not say this more that I did not give him any permission to contact the hospital. This delayed the release of my mom because we did not receive any of the equipment that she will need when she is release. This has caused friction within my family because of the delays that this has caused. He did not have my mom's well being in mind. This company should not tolerate this kind of behavior in my mind, due to the problem this has caused my family. I have to focus on my mom. I am writing this so no other family or individual has to go through this. read more

I contacted Redwood Hospice (referred by care manager/social worker at Palo Alto Subacute Rehab Ctr) before my brother and his wife were ready for hospice care, just to find out what they do. Chris called me back right away on a Sunday while he was traveling and set up an informational meeting for the next day. At the meeting with me and my sister-in-law, he carefully outlined in detail what hospice does and what the criteria are for comfort/palliative care are versus medical treatment. He also provided us with referrals to home healthcare providers (since my brother needed one to help when my sister-in-law went home) he has worked with. He took care to not push us toward any decision, just reassuring us that his organization was ready to help whenever and with whatever we needed. The home healthcare agency (Rick with Peninsula Seniors) contacted us soon after and like Chris, listened to our concerns and needs and assured us they could help whenever we wanted. Both places kept in regular touch thereafter, checking in. When my brother finally needed hospice, both organizations kicked in right away with great efficiency and effectiveness: they organized and coordinated all the services and supplies needed to make my brother comfortable and much happier at home. I would recommend Redwood Hospice and Peninsula Seniors without any reservations. They have made all of us (my brother, my sister-in-law, my out of state siblings, and myself) feel and be cared for in the most supportive ways possble. read more
