The Make Shop within the library
    Michelle F.

I recently received a class schedule (non-credit) brochure in the mail from Harper College and found a mosaic class taught by artisan and glass artists Urii Guchenia and Nathalie who has her very own studio in Willowbrook. The class was very inexpensive and well worth it! Kristin the librarian was very efficient in sending us a friendly email reminder along with the campus map to find the building where the class was. The class was held in "The Make Shop" within the library. All supplies were furnished and setup for us. Nathalie and Urii gave a us brief history of glass mosaics and were so helpful while we created our pieces. They had a vast array of glass tiles in every color imaginable! It was so much fun and gave us all a whole new appreciation of mosaic artisanry!

It's far off from the main Harper campus which for me was a definite plus. That means parking right outside your classroom and you never have to worry about going up & down aisles to find parking. There is always parking at HPC! HPC has a nice computer lab you have full access to including printing, plus a resource in the lab if you need help with anything. Actually the HPC is full of resources there to help with anything an adult learner could need. It's actually a great facility completely geared to the post bachelor degree adult age learners which is nice. My personal opinion is when you're of that age you do well in classes you take because you truly are committed to the learning aspect in your courses as opposed to just getting by, & retaining information for tests. If you need to take some Harper courses and ever see them offered at HPC, I highly recommend opting to take them here. Great staff, location and minimal issues as opposed to the main campus.

We started when they were in 7th grade, and at that time, their math skills were at a pre-algebra level while most of their friends were at a higher level. I decided they needed help, so we joined C2, and since then, their grades have improved. Their math teacher noticed that both of my daughters were performing above their current math level and moved them up a level. Yay! Long story short, they both achieved SAT scores of 1490 and 1520. They were accepted to both Purdue and UIUC. One is for engineering and the other for chemistry. This is significant considering many smart kids were reportedly rejected this year. Kudos to Colin, who was terrific in helping both of my daughters improve their reading/writing scores. C2 also assisted with college essays. They are flexible with rescheduling; sometimes, I felt bad for rescheduling almost every week, but high school kids are busy with extracurricular activities.

The gentleman in charge, Paul, is a very nice man and can help you put together a plan over the course of several months that will add some very helpful certifications/knowledge areas to your resume. He's also a great instructor. I had him for SQL, and he was awesome. Some of the instructors are absolutely fantastic. They have both the subject knowledge in addition to real life experience. Some other instructors...not so great. I was unfortunate enough to have a particular instructor for 2 classes. He was horrible. His English was really bad. For example, the word "glove" was written on his slide as "glows"...and he totally believed that was the correct word. He also taught the class from the perspective that we were all on the level of recent college grads, and knew nothing. He'd tell us how to dress for work, and show us videos on how you have to behave in an office. Looking around, I'd guess the average age of the class was around 45. If these people don't know how to dress or behave in an office, perhaps there's a good reason why they are unemployed. I, however, do know all of these things and don't need to have my time wasted with it. Another down side is that the class schedules do tend to fluctuate, probably to accommodate students and teachers alike. For most unemployed people it's not a big deal, but I am a caretaker and work part-time, so it was very hard for me to rearrange schedules at the last minute. Sometimes I simply could not attend class due to last minute changes.

Both of our boys have been there since they were infants, and they absolutely adore their teachers and look forward to going each day. Ms. Ahmed in the infant room is truly exceptional--warm, attentive, and deeply experienced. It's clear how much she loves and cares for the children, and the consistency she brings has meant so much to us over the years. Our school administrator, Ms. Dharti, is equally wonderful. She is highly involved, frequently present in the classrooms, and goes above and beyond to ensure that both teachers and students have everything they need to thrive. Every teacher we have had has been incredible with our boys! What stands out most is the nurturing, supportive environment combined with a strong commitment to Montessori principles. The classrooms are thoughtfully prepared, and there is a genuine emphasis on each child's individual growth--academically, socially, and emotionally. We have seen our boys grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity in ways that have exceeded our expectations. We truly cannot say enough positive things about this school and would wholeheartedly recommend Kripa to any family looking for a caring, high-quality Montessori environment.

The only downfall is that this school is not AACSB accredited which means that if there is ever a need for transferring, it would be difficult. I chose NIU's MBA program instead, but this would have been an easy second choice.
