Ashley, at the desk, was incredibly helpful, suggesting sites to visit, excellent places to eat, and even helping with our luggage. The location of the inn could not be more perfect - adjacent to the historical area and close to many great restaurants. Our "George Washington" room was fabulous! Sometimes staying in an old historic building means dealing with dated rooms. Everything in our room was updated, thoughtful, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Lots of wonderful little touches. The four poster bed was very comfortable and the shower excellent. The wifi worked great and there were lots of convenient plugs, There is a nice lounge area with a lovely adjacent terrace and snacks and tea and coffee available along with a nice continental breakfast. We were there on a Monday night so not all restaurants were open but we enjoyed visits to Precarious, Amber Ox, Mellow Mushroom and Aromas. Thank you to Billy and Sharon for a wonderful stay!

We stayed at The Cedars of Williamsburg Bed and Breakfast. This was a terrific choice. We stayed in the John Rolfe room, which was a second-floor room with a king bed. Every room has a private bath, but we found that this room, original to the home, had a slightly larger bath than some of the others. The owner and host at breakfast was a terrific guy with a great sense of humor, broad knowledge, and a wealth of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. The breakfast was very good and each day featured coffee and orange juice along with healthy selections from the gardens. One day, we had scrambled eggs, ham, and fruit. Another breakfast featured a spinach quiche with home fries and fruit. One small word of caution. If you are a hearty breakfast eater who enjoys bagels, toast, and pancakes in large quantities and intends to skip lunch and have dinner around 6:30 pm, rethink that plan. You will have to stop for lunch or, at the very least, plan to have snacks with you. In fact, the breakfast area had a supply of chocolates and snacks, such as corn chips, popcorn, and potato chips, to take along. The location, right on Jamestown Road across from the College of William and Mary, was only 1/2 mile from Colonial Williamsburg and 5 miles from the Jamestown Settlement and Archaeological Site. Even with a 7-year-old and two seniors, it was an easy walk to Colonial Williamsburg and a short drive to just about any restaurant you would like, from fast food to a variety of cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Italian. I have no reservations in recommending this bed-and-breakfast.

We noted a 4pm arrival and arrived 10min before and walked into our room with wine in a melted ice bucket. It must've been placed a while before our arrival. The bathroom was narrow with no hot water in the shower. The sink however only had hot water. Plumbing needs to be addressed. The toilet in the Piedmont room rocked and wasn't secured into the floor. Our room didn't have any towels. We had to request them. Our breakfast was delivered to our room which in theory was nice but the quiche was cold and the yogurt cup was expired. Plus they brought us 2 hot coffees with only 2 half and half's and no sugar. The TV in our room stoped working and staff was supposed to be on sight until 10pm per our welcome email but left at 5. This also prevented us from having a fire in our room. Service was not good and for the price, you can book another place with just as nice of aesthetics with staff that will value hospitality. To our surprise we entered what one could could easily confuse as a hostel (as walls are so thin you can hear every person walking and breathing) and were quickly whisked away to the 18th century where basic customer service and amenities, such as cellular service, WiFi, working tv, a phone, having towels in the bathroom, or even an option to buy bottled water, was simply too far fetched of an idea to fathom. Simply put, this place has been neglected by management and ownership alike.

There may be a family that benefits from housekeeping that swings a door into your feet at 9am, because they are hanging off of a creaky bed, but it certainly wasn't mine. Never mind the pretentiousness of a pretend cigar lounge, meaning not one to smoke in but just an aesthetic throwback to a time when people actually enjoyed themselves at this location. Not that one would want a cigar after eating chocolate pudding that tastes like it was infused with Trix cereal or any of the other dishes who sacrifice taste for novelty. I would have at least been frightened by the Colonial Williamsburg ghost tour, but after staying at this location, I realized that even the spirits probably wouldn't stick around.

First of all, there was an instruction card that came with the reservation however while it did indicate that there is a backdoor, it did not inform that this was the 'main' entrance. There is very limited parking and if you want to park across at the church on or the street, you are at risk of towing. They have no passes for parking in these locations. The beds are their own issue. If you are vertically challenged, you will have great difficulty getting into the main beds. We stayed in a 'suite' (I use this term laughingly as it was just two connecting rooms) that had another room with twin beds. While the main bed seemed to have a mattress from the last century, the twin beds were ancient. The "pillows" that they give you are quite literally flatter than a pancake they would serve you for breakfast. The suite we stayed in was in the front of the house and there is no insulation to cancel ANY of the traffic noises from outside. It was very very stuffy inside and I wasn't able to open a window. We asked for a step stool and were given one that wasn't even as high as a normal step on a staircase. It was still very difficult to get in to the bed. At no time while I was there did I see, hear or meet the host/hostess of the B&B. The only time we met any employee was in the morning during breakfast. These ladies were AMAZING. They almost made up for the lack of any other service or greeting in their friendliness. The breakfast was late the day I was there. There are signs everywhere stating that it would be served at 8:30 but it was closer to 9:30. I'm an early riser so this was a bit of an inconvenience. At least the coffee was available. They had eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, toast, cereal etc. It was set up as a buffet style in a very stylish area of the serving area. The dining room table is gorgeous but there are no placemats to put your plates on, I felt very worried about scratching this gorgeous table. The non guest rooms were fit with comfy areas to just relax and chill after a day of being a tourist. The furniture may not have been the most comfortable, but given how cozy each area was this was easily forgiven. I really enjoyed that each room had a Christmas tree already set up. This is not very handicapped friendly as no matter which way you enter, there are very old steps. The front steps were especially bad. To sum up; Parking; F Comfort; B Room Comfort: C+ Breakfast: A Location: A- Price: C (for our experience it was really really pricey)

Also as…read morepreviously stated, the hosts, especially John, do have an encyclopedic knowledge of the history here in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Some further things to consider as you decide whether to make this place your stay while in Williamsburg: 1. Breakfast takes at least an hour as John will ask you where you are going for the day and then regale you with stories of the location, watching you as you eat. If you're a history buff with a deep love for stories and a desire to be fully engaged at 8am, this is the place for you. If you like to drink your coffee in silence while you slowly wake up, it may not be. 2. Ask a question, however small, about any part of the house or object in the house and a story is tied to it. Sometimes one story launches into another and it's hard to get away. 5 min or 30 min, you never know how long and politely extricating yourself can be difficult. It is delightful that every part has meaning, but this style may not be for everyone 3. There are English Country dances Tuesdays and Thursdays which they strongly recommend you joining in. Even should you choose not to go, the bedrooms are right off the ballroom and the dancing goes till 10pm. This may not be for everyone 4. There is a house rabbit that stays primarily in the kitchen with the millers but during breakfast is allowed to roam the main floor freely. Depending on whether you're allergic, this may not be for you. 5. The mattresses are hard and the pillows are quite firm. This is to my liking but may not be to yours 6. There is rooms are somewhat cooled. If you're used to sleeping at 75 degrees, shouldn't be a big deal. If you like to sleep at 65, you'll be quite warm. Overall, if you're looking for a warm, inviting place with hosts that will catch you whenever they see you to chat by sharing their stories and delight in living in Williamsburg, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet uninterrupted holiday, you may want to look elsewhere.

You may find that is something reflected elsewhere in Colonial Williamsburg as well, but possibly not as consistently. Newport House is, as promised, walking distance to the places you will want to see in Williamsburg. It is across the street from William & Mary, if you are visiting there. The phrase "museum quality" likewise applies. If you enjoy history, and learning things, you'll enjoy the many stories and insights gracious owner John F. Millar can provide. You just need to ask questions. He's more than happy to share. He also will be dead on where it comes to where to eat, how much time to budget for various attractions, what is worth seeing, and what to avoid. Ask about the spoon bread at Christiana Campbell's. It's worth tasting. Aside from his personal connection to "Master and Commander" and "Pirates of the Caribbean II," John is a reliable guide where it comes to exploring Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Aside from the dwelling and the furnishings, even breakfast will be a historically accurate experience. Ask hostess and wife Cathy Millar (also very friendly) about Josephine Bunnyparts and house rabbits. Or bee keeping, if you prefer. Newport House does not accept credit cards, so keep that in mind. If you want accommodations that are in keeping with the Colonial Williamsburg experience, Newport House is for you. If you like learning things, it's even better.

We called for a last minute reservation & Scott immediately accommodated us! We asked for a 2 bedroom suite, as I was traveling for a weekend getaway with my BFF (and fellow "Steel Magnolia") for a girl's trip & Scott graciously offered the entire 3rd floor rooms to us @ a terrific price! He sent us emails with arrival info, weather updates & activities to enjoy during our stay. We were immediately impressed by the façade of this magnificent brick structure featuring several magnolia trees on the manicured lawn. Walking in was like stepping back in time! We loved the entry room with its immaculate wooden floors, showcase w/ books & antiques, stunning brick fireplace & hearth, w/ the mantle displaying pewter. We were absolutely drawn in to the Colonial Williamsburg feel! What a perfect welcome! The sitting & dining area were decorated w/ the same colonial vibe, a cozy sofa, a corner secretary, a grandfather clock & a set of comfy wing chairs matched w/ an antique table, by the white wooden fireplace accented w/ a copper tea things, candles, clocks & figures. This room also had a buffet table where breakfast was to be served. It had a huge selection of teas & snacks which were available all day. The rooms were exquisitely furnished; we loved the antique colonial feel. My room 3, was beautifully appointed w/ a grand four poster king bed that was high as the clouds! I loved the vintage step stool provided in each room to climb the stairway to heaven!! The bed was soft & comfy as the clouds too! I felt like I was truly sleeping in the heavens! The room was equipped with all the amenities necessary for our stay! A small frig & a luggage rack were tucked into the dormer windows w/ floral valances, a brocade camel back settee, plenty of outlets for your devices w/ free wifi, lamps, and closet space. The closets had nice wooden hangers and ironing supplies. I loved the burgundy oriental rugs & the creative way the flat screen tv was mounted to the wall. There were built in drawers on either side of the room, but the top drawers were taken out to attach the tv, yet the integrity of the colonial look was kept in tact. Clever! As this an old manor house, the floors creaked as we walked on them adding the the colonial charm of the place! One has to remember that this is an old manor house not a modern hotel, yet it was just as comfortable to us as a newer space. It was so homey and warm. The bathroom had cool, brass vintage fixtures, a large shower w/ great water pressure, plenty of towels & washcloths & a hairdryer (which dried my long hair super fast) in the vanity. Shower gel and conditioning shampoo is provided in dispensers in the shower, but you may want to pack some of your own conditioner. The highlight of the bathroom, and indeed, my experience in this inn, was the huge bathtub with a jacuzzi! I'm so glad I brought my bubble bath because I used this relaxing tub both days of my stay and it was so relaxing! The beveled mirrors were interesting additions & the recessed lighting on dimmers added to the chill vibe. There are extra towels downstairs by the staircase should any guests need more than the ones provided. My friend's room, 4, was just as special as mine, w/ a pretty cream settee at the foot of the bed. The bathroom to this room is private & is exclusively for the guests in room 4; it's about two or three steps from the room. But certainly not inconvenient. After our restful nights, we awoke to simply breakfasts that were diverse each morning, accommodating a variety of dietary needs. One morning it was French toast stuffed w/fruit compote and powered sugar on top (a guest fav!) along w/turkey bacon, the next morning was egg, veggie & cheese sandwiches served with fruit & muffins (which were homemade & delectable!) There's also oatmeal & energy/granola bars offered. Due to COVID, the meals are served in wax paper, individually wrapped, which took away from the B&B experience but was certainly understandable due to the circumstances. Scott let us know that this was a temporary feature, although many of his guests love the "grab n' go" convenience of the wrapped foods. Pots of hot fresh coffee were on hand as well! Although the breakfasts weren't my fave, I appreciated that Scott can always accommodate his guests preferences such as keto, gluten free, vegan, etc. He's a hard worker! He was always so cordial & hospitable to everyone! In the back of this gorgeous estate is plenty of parking for the guests, Adirondack chairs encircling a fire pit, a deck w/ additional seating & a welcoming "pineapple" sign! The owners here truly live up to the pineapple symbol of welcome w/ their friendly demeanor! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Magnolia Manor B&B and we will without a doubt return to this charming, stately, historic inn!

The inside of the house was more beautiful then the inside and it was decorated with colonial style curtains, pillows and even old style chairs. When it came to the room, the room was great! The best part was the huge bath tub with the jets! The jets felt amazing! and the tub was big enough for 2 people, which was a plus. The shower was really large as well and had a shower spout for your bottom area, which I have never seen before but it was very interesting. The bed was very high and I could barely get on top of it but luckily there was a step stool next to the bed to climb up to get in bed. It had a mini fridge in the room as well which was good, but it would have been better if there were some free beverages inside, like I have seen at other B&B I have been to. The breakfast was just eh and kind of weird honestly. Day one breakfast was like this piece of bread with maybe apples inside and they were individually wrapped and put out inside of a cake dish for whoever is staying at the B&B. There was only lemon water and plain water, and there wasn't much else as far as drinks. I was expecting more than just a weird piece of apple bread for breakfast because we were set for a long day of exploring the town and we wanted to have full stomachs while we were out, but that wasn't happening. There was literally nothing else to eat.....t was kind of strange. The next days breakfast was some sort of breakfast sandwich and that's it! They got the bed part on point in bed and breakfast, but the breakfast part sucked. They need to do better on that end. On a plus they had fresh baked cookies out for guests to have throughout the day and they were sooooooo good!
