My wife and I are already planning our return here and have and will continue to recommend the Aldrich House to our family and friends. This was a terrific choice. We stayed in the John Rolfe room, which was a second-floor room with a king bed. Every room has a private bath, but we found that this room, original to the home, had a slightly larger bath than some of the others. The owner and host at breakfast was a terrific guy with a great sense of humor, broad knowledge, and a wealth of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. The breakfast was very good and each day featured coffee and orange juice along with healthy selections from the gardens. One day, we had scrambled eggs, ham, and fruit. Another breakfast featured a spinach quiche with home fries and fruit. One small word of caution. If you are a hearty breakfast eater who enjoys bagels, toast, and pancakes in large quantities and intends to skip lunch and have dinner around 6:30 pm, rethink that plan. You will have to stop for lunch or, at the very least, plan to have snacks with you. In fact, the breakfast area had a supply of chocolates and snacks, such as corn chips, popcorn, and potato chips, to take along. The location, right on Jamestown Road across from the College of William and Mary, was only 1/2 mile from Colonial Williamsburg and 5 miles from the Jamestown Settlement and Archaeological Site. Even with a 7-year-old and two seniors, it was an easy walk to Colonial Williamsburg and a short drive to just about any restaurant you would like, from fast food to a variety of cuisines like Chinese, Mexican, and Italian. I have no reservations in recommending this bed-and-breakfast.

First of all, there was an instruction card that came with the reservation however while it did indicate that there is a backdoor, it did not inform that this was the 'main' entrance. There is very limited parking and if you want to park across at the church on or the street, you are at risk of towing. They have no passes for parking in these locations. The beds are their own issue. If you are vertically challenged, you will have great difficulty getting into the main beds. We stayed in a 'suite' (I use this term laughingly as it was just two connecting rooms) that had another room with twin beds. While the main bed seemed to have a mattress from the last century, the twin beds were ancient. The "pillows" that they give you are quite literally flatter than a pancake they would serve you for breakfast. The suite we stayed in was in the front of the house and there is no insulation to cancel ANY of the traffic noises from outside. It was very very stuffy inside and I wasn't able to open a window. We asked for a step stool and were given one that wasn't even as high as a normal step on a staircase. It was still very difficult to get in to the bed. At no time while I was there did I see, hear or meet the host/hostess of the B&B. The only time we met any employee was in the morning during breakfast. These ladies were AMAZING. They almost made up for the lack of any other service or greeting in their friendliness. The breakfast was late the day I was there. There are signs everywhere stating that it would be served at 8:30 but it was closer to 9:30. I'm an early riser so this was a bit of an inconvenience. At least the coffee was available. They had eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt, toast, cereal etc. It was set up as a buffet style in a very stylish area of the serving area. The dining room table is gorgeous but there are no placemats to put your plates on, I felt very worried about scratching this gorgeous table. The non guest rooms were fit with comfy areas to just relax and chill after a day of being a tourist. The furniture may not have been the most comfortable, but given how cozy each area was this was easily forgiven. I really enjoyed that each room had a Christmas tree already set up. This is not very handicapped friendly as no matter which way you enter, there are very old steps. The front steps were especially bad. This place has two separate cottages right beside the main house.... I stayed in a cottage, and they will bring breakfast right to your door in the morning. Yummy eggs benedict when I was there. One cottage has a small kitchenette - microwave and sink. It was even stocked with cereal, milk and OJ. There were rocking chairs on the porch and I enjoyed just sitting there in the evening, having some drinks and watching the fireflies. It's very lovely and peaceful. So, if you've ever been to Colonial Williamsburg and needed a place to stay, you know that every hotel chain on planet earth has one of their lower tiered brands on Bypass Road and/or some timeshares in the nearby vicinity. But if you really want to be "close to the action", you can stay a CW affiliated property and the most unique of the lot are the Colonial Houses. Let me start by saying that the hardest part of this experience is simply knowing what choices you have. Why? In 2021 I think it's safe to say that most people when they reserve a room like to see an actual or generalized picture of said accommodations along with a basic idea of where the actual property is located. If you want that here, good f-ing luck because it doesn't exist. How it works: Go to their website and put in your dates of stay along with the number of people in your party. Available Colonial House properties show up along with pricing and then you choose one. What's crazy is that CW on their website doesn't offer a map of where their Colonial House properties are located nor do all of the properties offer any pictures as to what the rooms look like or even what the property looks like. What's even crazier is that when you cross-reference that concept with the dough that they charge, it's a hell of a leap of faith for something that you can't fully research before they expect you to plunk down $400 or more. We stayed at the Nicholas-Tyler Laundry which is across the street from the Magazine and on the grounds of the Williamsburg Lodge (which by the way is where you check in for all Colonial Houses). Why this one? A lot of the Colonial House properties are on the smaller side and when you go above two people you knock out a good number of places which for the most part leaves only entire houses and that's where things start to get really pricey even in the off season and on shoulder nights. Nicolas-Tyler has two floors and overall is nicely appointed. The house has two dedicated parking spaces near the house at the far side of the main Wiliamsburg Lodge parking lot. The houses's first floor has a sitting area with small TV and a working fireplace that the housekeeping staff will light if it's below 50 degrees. There is a also a small dorm style fridge oddly placed in a random corner. There is a king sized bed and full bathroom as well. The 2nd floor has a couch, pull out trundle bed and two twin sized beds that are rock hard. There is also another bathroom and shower that are very interesting to use since the pitch of the roof encroaches on the head space big time (i.e. don't be too tall or else showering is borderline impossible). The main view from the back side of the house is of the Magazine and the Courthouse and if you're a CW lover, that can't be beat. With all this there needs to be some context. This house is not one of the original 88 but everything (aside from the TV's/fridge) are dated to look period appropriate. The pricing as I mentioned is super steep. A bit north of $400 for a one night Sunday stay during a sleepy time of March is nuts and at best is a one off gimmick that while nice, is seriously uaffordable to re-do with any kind of frequency let alone some of their other offerings that breach the $500 or $600 per night plateau. If you're looking for value, obviously this isn't it. But if you're looking for a special occasion splurge or something unique for a CW lover then this is it.

Booked a one night stay on the website and drive 6 hours to Williamsburg. Website took my credit…read morecard information and at no point said anything about a minimum two night stay or any limitations. Upon arriving the owner did not know about our booking. Claimed he had not received one. When I showed him the email with the booking information he then contradicted his original story by saying that he sent me an email stating that one night bookings on the weekend were not acceptable. When I told him I had not received an email he became belligerent and said that on the booking rules on the website it states that one night stays on weekends are not accepted. AT NO POINT during the booking process does the website direct you to this page or provide you with that information. When I proceeded to point out that he had my credit card information he responded that he had not charged the card (although there is nothing to stop him from now doing so, and given his lying and belligerence it's hard to trust that the information is secure). When I informed him that he needed to fix his website booking procedures because the website is as I described, he proceeded to insult me in front of my 10 year old son, unnecessarily raising his voice. Not a way to run a business or to act as a reasonable human being. Plenty of great places to stay in Williamsburg. Avoid this one like the plague unless you enjoy being insulted by a belligerent old man with a broken booking website who takes your credit card information without providing service. Probably the worst experience I've had in thirty plus years of traveling. If mistakes have been made and you can't run an effective website there is no need to insult the potential guests that your poor service have inconvenienced. Just awful all around.

He showed us our room, including what he called the "three person shower." He offered to join us in the three person shower, which was pretty weird. The home looked like someone bought out a Home Depot in 1990. It needs a modern reno. There are lots of figurines in the room, so it seems like there are always eyes on you. Breakfast involved bananas and peanut butter on toast. We won't return.

Some further things to consider as you decide whether to make this place your stay while in Williamsburg: 1. Breakfast takes at least an hour as John will ask you where you are going for the day and then regale you with stories of the location, watching you as you eat. If you're a history buff with a deep love for stories and a desire to be fully engaged at 8am, this is the place for you. If you like to drink your coffee in silence while you slowly wake up, it may not be. 2. Ask a question, however small, about any part of the house or object in the house and a story is tied to it. Sometimes one story launches into another and it's hard to get away. 5 min or 30 min, you never know how long and politely extricating yourself can be difficult. It is delightful that every part has meaning, but this style may not be for everyone 3. There are English Country dances Tuesdays and Thursdays which they strongly recommend you joining in. Even should you choose not to go, the bedrooms are right off the ballroom and the dancing goes till 10pm. This may not be for everyone 4. There is a house rabbit that stays primarily in the kitchen with the millers but during breakfast is allowed to roam the main floor freely. Depending on whether you're allergic, this may not be for you. 5. The mattresses are hard and the pillows are quite firm. This is to my liking but may not be to yours 6. There is rooms are somewhat cooled. If you're used to sleeping at 75 degrees, shouldn't be a big deal. If you like to sleep at 65, you'll be quite warm. Overall, if you're looking for a warm, inviting place with hosts that will catch you whenever they see you to chat by sharing their stories and delight in living in Williamsburg, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet uninterrupted holiday, you may want to look elsewhere.

Newport House is, as promised, walking distance to the places you will want to see in Williamsburg. It is across the street from William & Mary, if you are visiting there. The phrase "museum quality" likewise applies. If you enjoy history, and learning things, you'll enjoy the many stories and insights gracious owner John F. Millar can provide. You just need to ask questions. He's more than happy to share. He also will be dead on where it comes to where to eat, how much time to budget for various attractions, what is worth seeing, and what to avoid. Ask about the spoon bread at Christiana Campbell's. It's worth tasting. Aside from his personal connection to "Master and Commander" and "Pirates of the Caribbean II," John is a reliable guide where it comes to exploring Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Aside from the dwelling and the furnishings, even breakfast will be a historically accurate experience. Ask hostess and wife Cathy Millar (also very friendly) about Josephine Bunnyparts and house rabbits. Or bee keeping, if you prefer. Newport House does not accept credit cards, so keep that in mind. If you want accommodations that are in keeping with the Colonial Williamsburg experience, Newport House is for you. If you like learning things, it's even better.
