I popped in to grab some fresh seafood before heading back home to Cary. I stopped at a couple other seafood markets in the area, but they all smelled so strong that it was hard to stay in the store. The fish seemed much fresher at Blue Ocean and the smell was so much milder. I had a lot of questions and the guy at the counter was so helpful and friendly! He also did an amazing job packing my fish and shrimp with tons of ice for the drive. I made some of the shrimp as soon as I got home and it was awesome! Had the most bizarre visit here. After seeing their specials board advertising $5.99/pound flounder, I went inside and asked for 4 pounds - when I went to check out it was over $90! After pointing out the specials board, first they tried to tell me it wasn't on special and then after she physically went outside and read the board that THEY put out there, they said that was only for their frozen fish. I did not ending up purchasing the fish but called later just to see if their stories would stay consistent and they said over the phone that all flounder was $5.99/pound and that they would weigh it after the cleaned it. I then told her I was the same person who tried to purchase the flounder earlier on special and she still made up different stories about what I was trying to purchase vs what was on the specials board. Felt like they were trying to take advantage of a local because maybe they thought I was a tourist. Very disappointed and will be taking all my seafood business to Captain Jim's instead. Also, tried to purchase blue crabs last summer and after they checked, they were all dead from being too cold in their freezer. @Blue Ocean - do better! read more

This place should not be 4.6 stars. Keep away from this seafood market they lie saying everything is fresh from Carolina it's not all farm raised and old seafood! The manager lied about the little neck clams he said were not farm raised and when I called there to get more clams they were farm raised the girl told me! The Manager lied to me! and arrogant when I had called him he switched the story around was unprofessional hung up the phone on me and would not give me a credit for being lied too. read more

Like many retail outlets, as they get popular and grow the product or service suffers. We bought from blue ocean when they were down the street in an old building and were never dissapointed. The last 2 times we bought p&d shrimp they appeared to be thawed from frozen and were tough when cooked - boiled or grilled, didn't matter. Had to throw out the last 2 lbs we cooked. Not sure whats going on, but we are now wary of buying shrimp. They are opening another store soon in Atlantic Beach. We hope they will focus on fresh seafood. Thats what locals expect. My go to seafood spot in Morehead City. Blue Ocean moved to this new location and it is infinitely better. The building is clean, new, and upscale, and the options are incredible. We had some fantastic crab cakes that were very affordable (I think $6/$7) each, plus some homemade tartar sauce that they sold. I'm glad they added a few sides and prepared foods to the mix as well. Their kale salad is awesome, and they also sell rices, seasonings, dips, wines, etc. Friendly Market has done very well adding more sides/apps to their offering, so I'm happy Blue Ocean is going that direction too. Coming from DC, where seafood is grossly expensive, I appreciate the selection and pricing at Blue Ocean. Keep it up guys. read more

This place has hands down the freshest fish in Morehead City, and the nicest people running it. People who get what great customer service means. We live two hours away and decided to get away from our recent 'blizzard' with a trip to the beach overnight. Ordered smoked salmon, fresh yellow fin sashimi, cut on the spot black fin!, crab cakes, and awesome in the shell oysters to take home. YUMMO to all. They packed everything in ice for us for the trip back, and we feasted on these fresh goodies for two days. Since hubs drives from Greenville to the beach for work several days a week he stopped in and lucked out with another fresh caught black fin tuna this week, dressed and packed for the ride home. Really great -- we stopped in on a Saturday morning to pick up shrimp for dinner and fish to bring home. The fishmongers gave excellent recommendations, recipe ideas, and even filleted our triggerfish before packing it up over ice to take home. We spent about $20 on a half pound of shrimp and a whole fish -- lasting us three different dinners. Blue Ocean had a huge variety of seafood from clams to tuna steaks to five or so varieties of whole fish. I grew up in the Chesapeake Bay Area - so crab cakes have been challenging for me to find since moving South. Will definitely be back for theirs. We found this little gem while visiting Morehead City for the annual Seafood festival. The fish was fresh caught and filleted as you bought. Staff was great and gave advice on how to cook. We tried the red snapper, grilling tuna, shrimp, scallops and wahoo. All were wonderful but the wahoo steaks were the best. They told us how to grill them. We returned several times. We would highly recommend this store. read more

It is a good market and their seafood seems rather fresh. Its a little difficult location to try and get in and out of. Some of the prepared meals are a like fine dining, they are really good, but sometimes doesn't fit the southern atmosphere. Absolutely the freshest seafood and the biggest variety you can find anywhere in this area. You can pick the fish that you like and watch them filet it. Almost always, the fish was caught the morning. You just can't get better than that. I rent a house in Emerald Isle in the summer, and I am happy to drive 20 minutes to the market. We have moved to the area about a year ago. We tried most of the seafood stores. We have to drive about 5 miles to Blue Ocean through the tourist traffic but it is always worth it. We've been vacationing in the Morehead /EI area for years and saw the reviews on Yelp. So we gave Blue Ocean a try. We showed up at closing after dinner in Morehead one evening. The guy putting up the sign was very apologetic and offered to get us something if it hadn't been put away. We appreciated the offer but passed and came back this afternoon. It was absolutely the best seafood market in the area. It has the widest variety of local caught shellfish and fish, both whole and filleted, I've seen in this area. The lady who sold me a beautiful clear eyed vermillion red snapper dressed it to order and added some ice for the trip home. I can't go back soon enough.
