We've heard good things about this restaurant and what a pleasant surprise in the Northeast Kingdom to find delicious German/Austrian food. The Salmon Osso Buco (not often on the menu) was perfectly cooked and included a generous fillet of salmon. shrimp, scallops with a lite lobster sauce, sautéed fresh veggies and a white wine cheese risotto. The plate was finished. Hubs pork schnitzel, sauerkraut, red cabbage and mash potatoes--delicious. Pork could have used a sauce to counter act the breading. Equally delicious desserts--favorite being the apple strudel and maple glazed crème brûlée. Server was attentive and informative, towards the end of the evening we had to wait several minutes for our bill. We will return! read more

We have been here twice and this is one of the places where I have held off speaking about it as I want to be able to continue to get a reservation. I know the remoteness of Derby Line makes it easier, but the food, the hospitality, and the vibe all work here. It is excellent. That is coming from not only a person born and bred in NJ, but also one raised on German food from my grandparents, my great uncle, as well as my mother. The first time we went, it was my wife's birthday, so I booked early and also had an early seating time. We arrived a half hour early and the hostess was happy as our original booking time was filling up, so we were seated immediately. I mentioned to the waitress that it was my wife's birthday and since they were not slammed at that point, Fritz, the chef played happy birthday to my wife on the accordion. It was a brilliant touch and speaks to the genuine nature of the owners and their establishment. Our meal was excellent, as we were lucky in that my wife had the prime rib special and I had weinershnitzel, as well as the decadent chocolate mousse torte or cake. Sorry, we never do dessert but will always get that. This place is a MUST! You will not be disappointed. I will be bringing my daughter and her husband, dual American/German citizen and I anticipate he will be very impressed. What a treasure to find in the northernmost part of NEK! If you find yourself in this neck of the woods, be sure to stop at the Derby Line Village Inn for a most delicious Austrian meal! The quaint Inn is owned by a genuine professional Austrian chef who brings such joy and flavor to these generous dishes! The mushroom soup had so much Unami and flavor, you literally had to close your eyes and enjoy it! Amazing melt in your mouth potatoes and gravy, sausages with Bavarian mustard and light and lovely sweet and sour krouts, tender herbed cheesy spatzel, and crispy chicken Schnitzel! The dinner rolls pillowy perfect with whipped butter and we finished with a trifecta dessert plate of cream brûlée, apple strudel and chocolate moose. Yup, still gets a 6. Fritz hasn't slowed, he's ALL in on great food- no shortcuts, every meal has to be the best he ( and staff) can serve. There were 6 of us, all raved at the meals- breakfast, Brunch and Dinner. ONLY 5 Rooms at the Inn, book ahead! What keeps us going back is the exceptional service, the patio, the comfortable rooms, well trained staff - so friendly and helpful. And so close to Canada, lots to do. We took a 2 hour boat tour of the lake- that goes into Canada, the Millers Pub - Great views of the Lake, hiked a 3 mile path by the lake, helped burn off dinner- yes and relaxed. We just returned to the opposite side of Vermont (St Albans) from the Northeast Kingdom (NEK). We often stay and eat at the Derby Line Village Inn when we visit family in Derby. We have stayed here at least 4-5 times and are never disappointed! The Inn is amazing! The rooms are huge and very nicely appointed and include the most astonishing breakfast. This is our first stay during the holidays and I have never seen a more incredibly decorated establishment. Now for the restaurant.... The owner and chef Fritz and his wife are amazing. Fritz is an Austrian born and trained chef and having lived in Germany for nearly 6 years, my wife and I made numerous trips to Austria. This is authentic as it gets! Don't be surprised if Fritz attends to you personally and serves you exactly what you want. I almost don't want to review this little slice of heaven for fear that word will get out and I'll never be able to get in the door again as it'll be too packed with customers. Let me start of by thanking Fritz and Paula the owners, for one of the most memorable meals we've ever had! This place is a "Triple Threat", Atmosphere, great food and attentive, caring owners. It's a 1901 mansion that is richly decorated and has ornate woodwork trim, staircases, fireplaces and wood floors throughout that invite you in and take you to a place in time when craftsmanship was at its peak. Today, we went to the Derby Line Village Inn for brunch. Fritz makes the kind of breakfast, that I would be inclined to call for for my "last meal". Breakfast is my favorite meal, but I usually settle for a fruit smoothie. We had Eggs Benedict like no other...accompanied by EVERYTHING...crab cake, pork belly in maple syrup, potato pancakes one bacon wrapped shrimp, sweet-delicious vegetables, fiddleheads, tiny bits of delicate cabbage, it was crazy...crazy-good...each individual item was cooked to perfection...and so pretty. It is a meal to satisfy an entire day...it was perfect. And it's beautiful there. read more

We stayed here after skiing Jay Peak, it's well worth the 45 minute drive. Fritz and Paula are consummate hosts, proud to welcome you into their lovingly restored 1901 Northern Kingdom stately Victorian home. Fritz is a talented chef, Paula is very involved in local business and loves good wines, both are so enthusiastic about their profession. A warm welcome, spacious comfortable accommodations, great food, even great wine - what more could one ask for?!! To add some spice, the far end of Main St is in Canada, you can't get closer to the border. Amazing out-of-body dinner experience. Hadn't had much Austrian fare before but I approve. Wife and I had German pancakes and the charcuterie board--large portions! The local cheeses and meats were divine. I had the surf 'N' turf which was cooked perfectly, heavenly herb butter and creamed spinach. Wife had the braised short ribs, which were perfectly melty. Dessert was blueberry cheesecake and Irish coffee. With the salad and rolls, pretty much a 7-course meal and reasonably priced, especially compared to an hour west. Breakfast the morning after (we stayed at the inn) was not much different, excellent sausages, eggs to order and delightful potatoes. Fresh pastries! The owners and staff were friendly as someone who is an experienced home cook nearly all the notes dead-on (the steamed veggies weren't very flavorful but that's how some like them).
